    I really dislike those that complain about no configuration tools. I dont complain about it.
    if i had a gripe I would write one.
    he should write them. then he wouldnt have anything to complain about.

    bots they have going onto networks to look at the traffic in warez channels? I know of some irc networks including ours that have policies against invading the privacy of users, but what legal grounds do we and other irc networks have? we have a notice on connect that if you stay on the network you agree to our policies, and one of them is not being affiliated with any law enforcement or the MPAA or RIAA we are just trying to keep the users privacy on our network, we dont spy on them... and really dont care what they do. it also says in our notice that you agree not to use the network to break any laws, hence you will be disconnected. (which isnt exactly enforced) is there anything that we can legally do to prevent them from coming onto our network and harassing our users that may be breaking the law? I and many others just dont want the network used for hunting people down. thats not what we are about. can anyone shed some light on this issue as well?
    our message follows as an example:

By connecting to any of JustIRC.Net's servers (including this webserver), you agree to hold JustIRC.Net and its staff harmless from any legal action arising from use of the servers. You agree that you are not using JustIRC.Net's servers for malicious or illegal purposes.     I remember those days, but we did it the crude way... cut a patch cord in half and cross the pairs to make a crossover cable. then hope to hell one of us doesnt kick the cable :) but we were playing q1 with anchient ipx networking :)

    A friend of mine was running cat7 in building a few years ago.. odd? I never payed much attention to that at the time, since I assumed it was for real. what I want to know is why wer are still using TP when we have fiber available? we should be driving the price of fiber down, not TP. lets face it, TP can be prone to interference from strong sources, ect. Just my opinion..... If we drive the price of fiber down, maybee we can all get 3l33t fiber links in our homes :)

    regarding the copy-protected cds...

    As an Electronics technician, I can assure you that the felt-tip marker approach will NOT damage your hardware.
    the statement they make is grossly inaccurate.
    here is what they say:
    "It should be noted that using ink of any sort on the playing surface of the CD can cause loss of the entire contents of the CD. Introducing ink or foreign materials on the playing surface of a CD can also damage the CD player reading device. Consumers should be aware that any damaged media or corrupted media files caused by this hack may void any warranties for such media, the content contained thereon, or the playback or recording device. "

    this is wrong, since the CD surface never comes in contact with the optical pick-up assembly.
    What bold-faced liars!
    I felt this needed to be addressed.

    to me, it appears that way.. quite simply because they are basically being paid to say what they are saying.
    It seems to me like Microsoft is playing a new card, and that is to pay as little as possible for advertisement,
    and as little as possible to blast open source software,if it means hiring the think tanks to proclaim open souce no good.
    It doesnt suprise me that people are caught up in the hype that an MSCE is better than a degree.
    BS...
    Almost every MSCE I have worked with swore that Microsoft was behind most of the internet technology and UNIX played no role in it.
    This is your typical MSCE talking. obviously knows little to nothing outside of the Microsoft world.
    Microsoft is doing little more than paying for propaganda.
    I think we should answer back with some of our own.. sad thing is, ours will be true.....

    How? you ask?
    Easy. they state they have a switched mode power supply on board.
    for those that dont know, you can step up that meager 12 volts to 5,000 volts if you wanted.
    also, they state that it is a DUAL TRIODE tube.
    this may very well NOT be a joke. it can be done. issues I have with this setup include noise, heat, and if the tube is socketted.. or available if it dies down the road. todays power supplies are better filtered than the supplies of yesterday, and im sure that the tube is better made, as well.
    I may want one just for the hell of it, you have to admit... its pretty damned neat

    they decided one day to block any mail that didnt have your address in the "to" field...
    ex: mail sent to lamer@domain.net is forwarded to user@host.org as far as the server is concerned, it isnt there FOR "host.org" but it's there for "domain.net" basically, its a tactic to get you to use your @rr address exclusevely. and not use anything but their service. I personally do not like this tactic, and they do it in the name of spam prevention, when in fact, it does little to prevent spam.

    that you can update the firmware.. toshiba, sony, ect.. their DVD players all accept firmware updates reason being is that newer movies may or may not play properly as the software gets newer. problems range from lockups to pixelation, garbage on the screen. im an electronics tech, and I see this daily. so, firmware updates are VERY important. on older units, we have to loterally remove the EEPROM and replace it. new ones, an interface and a serial cable is all thats needed. of course, only authorized service centers have this hardware/software. but, your correct... the ability to update the firmware will be VERY helpful. and it makes the life of the tech easier :) hope this helps you.

    and its probably just as easy.
    Most CD players you buy nowadays have optical outs, and most DVD players you can buy also can play cd's and have optical outs/coax.
    high end soundcards have optical/coax inputs
    (getting the hint?)
    set up your favorite CD/DVD player with your TOSlinks, or coax... and record those tracks into wav files.
    then compress with your favorite utility.
    what about quality?
    isnt it still digital?
    yep. thats the beauty of it.
    go forth, and rip disks :)

    what will this cost the taxpayer?
    what will it cost to connect?
    what are they going to CENSOR?
    this is a good idea, but i would rather not see a government controlling it.
    it wont be long before they start filtering porn, or running carnivore on it to watch everything its users do, in the name of 'security' and 'public safety'
    what they will most likely do off the bat?
    filter ports and NO tellecommuting!
    if this was a privately run thing, i would be all for it.
    im sure the local telco and cable co. is against this. after all, its lost DSL and cable subscribers.

    this will never happen.
    its a good idea... but AOL? they spam you on a daily basis via banner ads
    they can block a lot more of the spam if they want.
    if i recall, AOL wanted to SELL! the users email addresses to SPAMMERS!
    and aol sends you spam from its 'partners'
    your spammed when you sign onto the service, unless you specifically opt out
    you can be called by aol, once again.. unless you specifically opt out.
    now hotmail? thats where a lot of spam ORIGINATES from! it can be stopped. microsoft doesnt care about spam.

    on another note. i would like to sue spammers in my state(south carolina) but my state doesnt have a law against spam.
    we need to be a thorn in the side of spammers.
    secure your webpages, webservers and the like.
    we need to identify the networks spammers use to 'collect' their booty and drop a few firewall rules in against them.
    let them use dialups for collecting, it will be pretty slow.
    spammers are the BIGGEST thieves on this internet. they steal your bandwidth, and mine.
    we need to steal theirs as well. then maybee they will play nice.

    lets collect statistics.
    who hosted the website, how many websites defaced that were hosted that that particular company/individual and not use their services.
    they will wake up really quick as to how the world turns, when they are administering a standalone dos machine in the basement.
    defacement IS a problem, havent we learned enough in the past when companies are scrambling to find out if the credit information of customers was compromised?
    funny how many 'lazy' admins we have out there.

    set up wireless networks, neighborhood networks, anything that is OURS and not THEIRS!
    right now i wuld love to see a medium that anyone willing to pay an up front fee can get online for no additional cost.
    we can have this if we want it, you know.
    no spam, no banners, no popup ads
    use ipv6 and ipsec, and your all set.
    it is our internet, we allowed this to happen to it.
    what do we do? we cant take it back, so build another one.
    a nonprofit provider would work...
    i say everyone pitch in and create such a thing.
    i bet that AOL and the telcos provide better service REAL fast.
    i bet those spams stop, REAL fast.
    and i bet you wont see another X10 popup ad ever again.
    on another thought... i suggest that the small isps, the ones willing to provide a good service for less install spam killing software to kill popup ads and banners.
    this is just what i want to see, and im sure some others will agree with me.

    I buy bandwidth, im gunna do whatever I want.
    you supply the pipe, and i will squeeze EVERY LAST BIT THRU IT. I PAID for it. simple.
    I also expect no unfettered access. no blocked port 25, 80, ect.
    if I want to run a personal webserver, I paid for the bandwidth, and I should have it.
    this is just another tactic they are using to get you to use their buisness service with the _SAME_ bandwidth.
    I pay for something, I expect to get it.
    whether its 56k, 128k, 1.544mbits, ect.
    i will use that 56k, 128k, and 1.544mbits to its potential. I paid for it.
    the idea that webservers are clogging their network is obsurd.
    they dont want it clogged, its an infrastructure issue. not mine.
    the assumption that if you run a webserver you must have a buisness account, even more ridiculous.
    im going to get buisness service, so I can post
    my pictures up on the internet, and give the address to my family and friends? no way.
    I am personally tired to seeing the consumer being bullied by cable companies, microsoft, the telephone companies, ect.
    when is this going to stop?
    we must stop it. here and now.

    i dont see why not.
    perhaps it can be used for the 'last mile' and drive the price of high speed access down.
    as it is now the costs are extreme.
    i personally like the idea of neighborhood access
    only thing is, that getting everyone to chip in
    on the initial expense isnt the easiest thing
    most people dont see what they are getting until its handed to them.
    i would really like to see a neighborhood network connected this way. run the T into a hut, and have an access point. everyone in the neighborhood online without digging trenches and renting equiptment, getting permits and permission.
    i wouldnt bother with the built-in security. its already been proven worthless.
