You're definitely right regarding the machine processing requirements, especially their parallel nature. But what about all the data that's not currently in (easily) machine readable format? I bet that data entry or OCR on that volume will be killer.
Actually, I was lucky to get net access sometimes during my tour. You may, of course, be referring to postings made by my brother Chris, as we share the same account.
As a member of the 3rd Infantry Division that just returned from Iraq, I take pretty serious offense to your remark. We take extreme care in the field to avoid civilian casualties, even at the risk of our own lives and/or positions. Until you know what you're talking about, feel free to take your hands off the keyboard.
As a US SOLDIER myself, and a member of the 3rd Infantry Division that just returned from Iraq, I take pretty serious offense to your remark. We take extreme care in the field to avoid civilian casualties, even at the risk of our own lives and/or positions. It's sad that you feel it's ok to sit at your computer and ruminate about what happens in a place you know little about.
I'm so glad you're so open minded that you can just insult others' beliefs at will...
The term "tribal deity" is a gross mis-representation, and you know it (if you're half as intelligent as you sound).
As far of the rest of it, I pretty much agree...
You are entitled to your opinion, of course.
First of all, by your logic you can't fault me for hating such bombers, because I believe them to be guilty. So if that's really your stance, you can just stop now.
But let us continue. For one, regardless of whether you believe the victims to be innocent or guilty, I think you might agree that summary execution is not in order.
What's more, the Right Decision is NOT only based on individual world view. If that were so, then if I think you deserve to be murdered because I disagree with you, that would be A-OK. One general measure of civilization is that it values human life to at least some degree. If you at all value human life, then you would see that regardless of justification, such suicide bombing is wrong.
Maybe you should try actually RESEARCHING Waco...I'd recommend the book "Cold Zero" as a start...by someone who was actually there. It's better to go to primary sources than just pick up the viewpoint of the mass media.
I'd say that's neither pro-gun, nor rhetoric.
It's obvious why it's not rhetoric.
I certainly hope you can see why it's not PRO-gun...unless you LIKE killing people.

"...sodium, unlike water, is not corrosive to many structural materials."
Don't be such a jackass.
First of all, there are a huge number of donating organizations (and countries) dedicated to the causes that you're talking about.
Second, you seem to suggest that because these are important causes, any cause (of what MAY be secondary importance) deserves no support until your causes are solved. Well, I'm sorry, but world hunger is a doozie of a problem. Yes, I know, blah blah, it could be done with our reserves, blah blah...that has nothing to do with the MacArthur Fellowship. While we're working on important things like hunger or curing cancer, it would be nice to have some art (and science!). Grants like these give a chance for people to work without as much financial boundary as normal. In order to advance society, ou have to give creativity a chance!
>>So if I decide to spend my money on hiring a hitman to kill you, that'd be cool? You are advocating non-interventionist moral theory: a SERIOUSLY bad idea.
Fallacious argument, using extremes to prop up a somewhat shaky point.
>>So stop advocating the violation of rights which you hold so dear.
This has nothing to do with rights. As ignorant as (s)he may have sounded, I think that he's saying that he believes it is bad form to tell others how to spend their money. He's not talking about some high-fallutin free speech issue here.
>>And to prevent anger, may I advise that you cease using profanity?
And to prevent anger, may I suggest being less condescending?:)

And the res is not "odd", as though it were something bad. It's just not a standard windows/CRT res. I find a rather like it, which is when it came time to get a new laptop to replace my area 51m (essentially a rebranded saeger) i bought a powerbook.
While I agree that copyright and other forms of IP law need some serious revision/balancing, I think the the total abolishment of copyright may be going about 10 steps too far, at least at this point. Such a step would require some major economic modification, and I know that the U.S. at least isn't ready for such a change (I don't live anywhere else, so I can't say anything even mildly authoritative about elsewhere).
Abolish anti-murder laws, reduce lifetime-incarceration of innocents!
(Yeah, I know, worthless analogy, but hey, I just got to work).
Could you tell me where you work? Because I don't want to apply for a job at a company with assholes like you that are unwilling to answer someone's question without belittling them.
As true as the generic nature of many of the parts may be, the fact is that the cases are made of very thick, very durable plastic. Unless you use your computer tower in some sort of full-contact sport, the case durability of an Apple should do you fine.

G5 Tower inexpensive? God, if only...
I think that a lot of the generalizations you make here refer to the common PC user. I use both PCs and Macs, and I can tell you that most mac users I have talked to are actually a bit more educated regarding their computer choices than your typical PC fan.
While I agree that many teachers may perform better under the watchful electronic eye, there are other possible scenarios, some of which worry me.
When I was in high school, I had several teachers who used unorthodox teaching methods, methods which our rather stodgy (and eventually forcefully retired) principal would have been against.
Additionally, this could negatively impact discussing in politically related classes. My U.S. History class in high school began every day with an open issues discussion. Now, this same principal had a very strict censorship policy with the school newspaper, i.e. all political discussion was essentially removed. What happens when students (or teachers) express ideas that the principal/admin does not agree with? In the case of non-audio systems, what about when these topics are written on the board (our teacher kept an "opinion matrix"? Does the admin. quietly suggest that the teacher depoliticize his politics class?
Finally, my fiancee is student teaching now, and I guarantee she'd find such coverage a distraction. Nothing bothers an intelligent individual such as she like being treated as a criminal, or at the very least as someone who cannot control her classroom without surveillance.

Out of curiosity, can anyone expect to process and audit that data in a reasonable timeframe? Especially on a volunteer basis?

Now all SIX people who bought an N-Gage can put down their systems and get ready for some DMCA-style fun!
Tinfoil hat time then?

Very intelligent and cohesive. As the child of a family of law enforcement officers, and a student of Criminal Justice, thank you.
But killing of innocents isn't perfectly understandable.

No, it's 5400.

I have tried it. It's not fun. Nor is it fun to be shot at with nuclear warhead tipped missiles. Missile defense, yes please.
