If you want NASA to do it, it'll cost well over $50 billion.

It wouldn't cost nearly that much if people assumed a significant chance of failure. Remember, not a single astronaut died during a missing during the mercury/gemini/apollo years ("Failure is not an option" was coined by NASA back then), except for the tragedy during a testing of equipment in Apollo 1. Many people would be VERY willing to risk bodily injury/death for a great thrill. I mean hell, people ride motorcycles, don't they? (or as we call them in the ER... organcycles)

Youth sport interest is not going down because of videogames, well not directly. If it truly has gone down, I think it's because of the overall decline in athleticism in kids today, because of health and obesity problems. In one of my medical school classes, we read a medical journal article that says that for all american babies born in 2000, ONE IN THREE will be a diabetic (type ii - the type more related to lifestyle, to WAY oversimplify it) - and I wouldn't be surprised if europe is experiencing similar diabetic explosions (cue unfunny '+5, funny' comments). That statistic is #&@*! insane!!! This is the first generation whose life expectancy might actually DECLINE from the previous one.

There isn't a single time in my entire life where I've been with a friend and we wanted to play some tennis, but instead decided to play Mario Tennis instead. I never wanted to go for a run one minute, and then decide "Nah, lemme play Track & Field on the NES instead and hit the 'a' button as hard as I can instead of a 3-mile run."

However, so while I don't think Madden has been a substitute for some real-life backyard football, it is possible that videogame players habits as a whole have lead to some of the weight/sedentary lifestyle habits of its players. If that's so, then tv and non-sports games would also be just as at fault...

that's incredibly insightful. I remember in the early/mid 90's, a commentator in MacUser (I think his name was Guy Kawasaki) was the ONLY person who got it right. While everyone was scratching their heads and had stupid ideas about why the Mac was a distant #2, this commentator had it EXACTLY RIGHT. He said it was "all about games." Yeah yeah, Mac had Myst and a port of some Sierra games, but it didn't have x-wing and all the random crap games the PC had. There was a reason that NONE of my friends had Macs. When they'd talk about Star Wars: Rebel Assault, I'd mention Mac Manager. Maybe now that games aren't as much of an issue anymore it may affect gaming dynamics industry-wide.

Only problem with this is the power of the "browse." When you go to the Gap and you try on a shirt and it's nice but they don't have it in your size... boom, they give you the item # and you go right on gap.com and buy it in the correct size (free shipping, too).

But it's different with items you don't know you want. A lot of times people (myself included) will go into a store just to "browse," and depending on a number of factors I may choose to buy a game which I had 0% intent to buy upon entering. Whether it be the 2 kids next to be yappin' about a game, the recommendation of the employee or the box-art (well, usually the game screens on the back) on the actual game. You just don't get that online. Banner ads to get my attention turn me OFF of a product, and it I don't know some no-name gme, I'm not going to find it online. (the 1-inch by 1-inch icon from a search with 25 results will not likely grab my attention).

I'll eventually get it for $20 somewhere (classified, ebay, half.com, etc).

Oh, and you made an intelligent point, so I assume you're too intelligent to try and say "But it's Bush who made them hate us in the first place!" You're way too smart to think that. Yeah, like the terrorists hated the 8 months bush was in office when they bombed New York, or the ~10 months that Clinton was in office in '93, or the few years Jimmy Carter was in office when they killed all the soldiers in Lebanon. It will display, for the public record, his exact crimes, and for every horrible act, Bush will be given credit (right or wrong) for ending it.
