You are in the right ballpark of thought.. A good way for apprehending the bug UNIX is by focusing on POSIX.
It is the standard by which some of the most modern systems (except MSFT... they wont conform) are compared to.
Plus since posix is huge.. there is a lot to learn.
My Pentium Pro is just fine running DamnSmallLinux! Why would I ever want a new fangled machine with all these cores?
C'mon.. first it's got the two most powerful words I'vs ever heard.. "Pentuim" and "Pro" (that's short for PROFESSIONAL).
I have all that 128 megs of something Vista is talking about already.. and I believe you may not remember. but my machine runs the PRO version of Intel. Besides.. i have FrontSideBus!.. And video? My 3DFX is superior to everything out there! Helloo... pixel shading!!???!
You bet with all of us out here already in cpu heaven well never walk into your Fry's or BestBuy's... NO WAY.
Who needs usb anyway? I have the -original- serial bus!
Try and mess with that!!!
I still have that very issue of Wired Magazine that the iSmell was publisized in from like 6 years ago..
I remember being so fond of it because (if i remember porperly) it was a Spumco project.
And I wanted so badly for that to become a reality.
Viva la Spumco!!!! (and Ren and Stimpy too)
I have been through three ipods (because i'm stupid enough to never buy the apple care plan).. and every time I've ripped my own albums and sent them down through gtkpod. i've never infact purchased anything other than the basic ipod and some nicer earbuds (the apple ones just plain suck).
DRM and me never got along, and the idea of people having ipods to do whatever with? (given all the open source alternatives) is the great appeal for me.
i've taken great care to make sure that quicktime nor itunes ever touch my harddisks.
Media Player 6.4 is perfect for keeping security. However, it is true that Microsoft doesn't allow updated codec downloads, but other groups have released Codec-Packs that are inclusive of Windows Media Player 8 and 9.
Try -> http://doa2.host.sk/codecs
(i don't on any code there, nor am I affiliated with the site)
