Well, my post was not clear enough on this. In fact, I am rather than looking at something like Soekris SBC or something like that which is running very low on power for a comparable performance of my old 486.
Also, another point to consider, is maintenance and parts availability. If my old 486 break, I am not sure I will find easily and quick enough parts to replace defective ones.
For sure, that's interesting to know Linux is running fine on old hardware, but that's not only interesting, that's also useful to avoid throwing in the garbage can some toxic hardware that can still do useful tasks.
I don't think it took weeks to test Linux on a Pentium II. I am currently running an old 486-25MHz 16 MB RAM 325MB disk + 500MB disk, ISA only I own since 1993. It is running 24/7 for years now. I am also running a Pentium 166, 64MB RAM and 1 GB HD also 24/7. I have old Fujitsu laptop Pentium 133 MMX 48 MB daily used as a Thin client (kernel 2.6) by my daughters for homework and Internet access. I also have three IBM Netfinity servers all Pentium II, one dual processors (450 MHz), all ServeRAID level 5 (with SCSI drives U-160). They are running kernel 2.6.
Why throwing money at latest hardware when you can do useful things with old hardware which will otherwise go to the municipal dump leaking toxic heavy metal in the water?
The only reason I am thinking about changing some of these, it's not to get more CPU power, it's to run with less power hungry hardware.
Call that news, I call that propaganda. That's not to Apple to decide how many copies a customer may wants to make of the file he just bought. When buying music, you are buying the right to listen that music. Over the life of the buyer, I can see the need to make much more than six or even ten copies.
You are buying the right to listen at a specific song/music, didn't you? So, when imposed a restriction on the number of copies you may want to do for your private and personal use for whatever reason, you are denied the right you just bought and gave money for.
The planned nuclear plants are there to meet short to mid-term requirements and needs for energy. The new concept you are talking about is not mature enough and many further research needs to be done in order to actually build such a reactor.
So, what we are talking about today, is just an intermediate step. The reactor you are talking about are viewed as the fifth generation of reactors.
However, it raises the question: "Should everyone be authorized to plug anything, anyhow to the internet without a minimum of security measures?" And much more, "Should the hospital fire those IT peoples which plugged their network to the rest of the world without strong security measures?"
How do you feel about being eventually cared by an hospital which the network and computers has been hijacked? Would you trust the medical records?
And it's not to say the perpetrator is innocent, he is for sure guilty and responsible for his actions. However, an hospital cannot blindly plug its network without strong security measures to the internet in the hope of not being a target for all the vilains around the world. That is very irresponsible.
And it's not say you can take for granted, given TFA and statistically speaking, half of the posts on Slashdot are made under influence of toxoplasmas. They are not only trying to control you, which is cumbersome I admit, but they are trying to rule on Slashdot, which is a real problem.
However, vandalism may also comes from public as well as from politicians. That was the case for an entry in the french version for a local politician whose bio was repeatedly vandalized by his opponents.
Seems you forgot to add "project management" charges to the bill. I guess there were at least three project managers on this one and all the related staff to edit meeting minutes, etc.
Mod parent up.
That's the whole point. I have never ever seen such low rates from IBM Global services or any other IBM department as well. The rates are more in the 150-300$/hr bracket. The total amount charged represent something like 7-15 man/days.
7. Some ads are masking text from the site you are browsing with sliding panels which don't slide back properly and keep parts of the text you want to read masked. I suppose they are made to work with IE.
I often e-mailed site owners/maintainers about this problem and was never successful to have them resolved it.
WTF? Are you trying to tell me/. is no longer "The Nuts and Volts of News for Nerds"? Or maybe you are just telling me there is nerds only in computer science departments.
Even with a political issues section in/., it becames obvious it's no longer what it was and the original poster's question make it clear. That's a politician's question. Something like, "I know you guys are researchers, but tell me what you will find if you want some funding, otherwise it will become very difficult to justify the expense before the face of the taxpayers".
I just realize I don't know much about this stuff and when time comes to make a choice of an algorithm over another one, I just don't know which one is the better choice.
Anyone here can provide some links/references to appropriate documentation to educate myself?
For the sole purpose of listening at music, it seems to do the job. I don't have this gizmo, I rather than use a special cassette with a stereo jack to my Zaurus 6000-SL and it's working fine.
What would be better than a USB jack IMHO, a CF slot or SD slot to insert 2GB of music on a post stamp directly in a Ogg/MP3 player.
So, you can protect yourself efficiently by reflecting/blocking the UV laser beam. Or at least make it works the wrong way and cause unexpected damages.
Seems not as safe as it should to use.

You can do this with this CarPC. Knowing MythTV, you just have to copy all your DVD on the HD and you have a movie/music jukebox. And if you have a MythTV at home, you can even transfer other shows you recorded.
Any high-speed private network using about any protocol would do the same. And I haven't read any evidence the TCP/IP trafic is transiting on the Internet at all. And in fact, there is no need for it to.
I agree, the parent comment shouldn't be marked flamebait. That's a very legitimate comment. There is strictly no news to discuss here, there is a news about a news to come next week.

An array of peta-drives makes much more sense.

Should I call this pacifism? Arrrg, I don't mind!
Kicking out politicians won't be enough.
...and there is also the Moron, responsible for Battle Fields.

What will happen to this generator during the winter, will it survives?
How the distilled water will be kept liquid during the night?
How much power will be redirected to keep the water liquid during operation?
Will there be any combustion residues freezing into the engine during the night?
What impact on the engine components? I read metallic parts become fragile when hydrogen combustion occurs in the combustion chamber.
