Perhaps I do not fully understand something here but the following comment from the PARENT has me a little confused.

Much (not all) Slashdot (and pro-OSS) discussion never actually references sources, preferring to stick to anecdotal second hand knowledge - "Windows always crashes" etc.
I don't see why I as a USER needs to wait for some miss-informed journalist to write an article about Windows before I can comment about it. I've used it ever since Windows3.1. and if from personal experience I know it crashes, is that not a valid response or critique of the software? Do I need to have an article posted on a news site, so I can refer to it to justify my comments? This logic makes no sense to me. First hand experience is far from ...anecdotal second hand knowledge.. as suggested in the PARENT post.
I may be a Linux follower but logic tells me this:

    a) That if I go to Windows update I get 40 updates from the last 1+yr plus from a fresh install..
    b) I get daily updates sometimes when it comes to Linux... and plenty more then 40 updates a year.. probably 40 updates every 40 days!

Now...Linux isn't admitting flaws? You've got to be kidding me!@#

Apple's crazy to ask 200 dollars more, the G5 should be half the price to even be considered.
I think your missing the fact that the other systems beside the G5 had to get 'extra' features included to get the price range even close to the G5. If they would have purchased the pcs with all the lacking components as the G5 the prices could have been easily over $1000 cheaper.

Aswell just because your buying a brand name product doesn't mean you should pay more, logically they hold bigger market share and should be offering products at a cheaper rate!

Is the criminal still commiting a crime, yes! Does it justify 20years in prison? I don't agree. Think about this... if you leave your door wide open, leave all your important documents read/write access on 500workstations...allows for access from the internet to every service running on your network. There has to be a point where the company has to take some responsibility for being utterly oblivious to security. I think if someone hacks into a company who has a wide open security policy and does no damage whatsoever, they should receive something similar to a b & e charge..why should they receive something more severe then a murder? What kind of crazy thinking is that? Rape is on avg. 11 years of jail time in the US... you want some 17year old with too much time on his hands (because school isn't challenging him) being charged with hacking and sentenced to life for breaking into 50+ companies and doing no harm whatsoever?

employer at a web hosting company = E

S: I notice you have all your financial documents shared over the network E.
E: You were on the financial server looking at documents?
S: Sorry sir, I saw all these shares and wondered what they were on the network. (S's job is to help with network problems)
E: We found a .doc file on your system and it has personal data.
S: Ya, thats what I mean.. this is a big security risk.

As a consumer myself I stoped buying cd's 8years ago when I came to the conclusion that cds were basically 15 songs, and 14 of them being complete garbage, where the 1 song that was good was the one being played over and over again on the radio. I have downloaded a few mp3s, so sure call me a pirate, however I would not have bought the music other wise... I basically downloaded music because the radio station isn't allways playing music so I have burned 3 cds in the last 2 years for my car stereo, aswell one cd of 150songs for my mp3 player... some of those songs came from my cd's. (About half)....

I think its safe to say that your 'smoking something' because its clear to any informed consumer that piracy has not hindered the music industry at all, I personal think its actually helped. That fact that consumers are becoming more knowledgable and deciding that $20 isn't worth one good song that lasts for 3minutes..isn't because of piracy, its because of LOGIC. Do you honestly think a CD is worth $20 for 1 decent song and say 12 shity ones? Interesting is you can get a DVD movie which has a MOVIE and a soundtrack for around the same price, sometimes cheaper then a CD of that soundtrack thats on the DVD. RIAA is just hurting the industry anymore, if I were a Record Store Owner, I would boycott all RIAA members and take a stand.
