On 512MB Vista runs perfectly fine, having automatically turned off the UI bells and whistles and throttled back some of its services. In my experience 1GB is the sweet spot, which is how much I have on my Dev box.

This was just before the big 'reset' where they realized they were going in the wrong direction, and completely refocused their efforts -- they wen't gun-ho on security, developing XP SP2, and moving 'longhorn' development to the win2k3 codebase instead of the bloated junk they had for the very early previews.

So the statement makes total sense within context. Soon after Jim's statement, the development of 'longhorn' was dramatically altered. You can't use it as a reflection of the RTM'd product. The RTM'd product is a result of these harsh words.

  5. brand new Thinkpad, my experience on Microsoft Worried OEM 'Craplets' Will Harm Vista · · Score: 1

I bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad for my wife a few months ago. I was shocked at the OEM setup. I kid you not when I say that the task bar had 12 icons in it for apps that ran on boot (many hidden by the 'unused icon' feature in XP). When I went to the Run portion of the registry, it had 30+ entries in it for executables to run on log in. Add to this a desktop shrewn with icons, and a battery meter took up another 15% of real estate on the task bar. It was ridiculous. I ended up cleaning out probably 95% of all the auto-start apps -- they were mostly auto-updaters for crap applications, or resident launchers that supposedly sped up the launch of apps that my wife wouldn't ever use anyway.

I sincerely hope MS can reign in this kind of setup...

Vista is not available for consumers until the end of January. Zune is a consumer application. It's probably safe to say that they wanted to get Zune out ASAP in time for the holidays, so they concentrated on the XP client first and foremost. It will support Vista when it is released (a beta is already available that works just fine). The SQL Express issue is more relevant, since Vista is available to businesses. As has been mentioned a bunch of times already the article is misleading though, since it has nothing to do with SQL Server.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised that the decision to use C# is partly to lock the game down onto the MS platform. But as a technology you should be able to make some awesome games w/ the language.

  12. for me, a Masters really helped on Advice For Programmers Right Out of School · · Score: 1

Might seem silly to suggest more school, but in my case a Masters in CS helped me considerably, both in coding and depth of understanding in the field. This is assuming you avoid specializing in the theoretical aspects where it can get even more detatched from the real world than your undergrad CS was. I was able to gain lots of hands-on experience in the fields of AI, Graphics, Networking, Databases, (and others) and finally settled on OS where I spent a year hacking away at the linux kernel while doing research. Way more experience than I would have gotten out in the field in that amount of time.

Coming out of the Masters I had the experience and confidence to get the job I wanted (developing in the field of OS), versus my experience out of undergrad where I could barely crack into the IT field.

    Good luck!

Without Administrator access, a virus can at best mess around with his son's account. Easy enough to fix by killing and recreating the account. This is actually true of XP as well (and OSX/Linux, obviously), but Vista is the first MS OS to handle Standard User in a straightforward way.

And with UAC, since Administrators don't even run with full token by default, 3rd party applications will quickly move away from assuming Admin access (a huge problem with running XP as limited -- apps blow up).
