It's tough to find good anonymizing proxies, especially all-purpose socks proxies. However, for your browsing needs, there is a decent list of webproxies at this website as well as some lists of socks but I can't really vouch for those.
I personally have used anonymouse. It has an annoying popup and can be fairly slow and has sketchy cookies support (which can be a drag for messageboard use) but it's reliable enough for the occasional session.
I'm no parallelization expert but it seems to me that a compiler that reliably gives you a scaling factor above 80% would be a huge deal. Is it really possible to achieve those kind of results across the board? Or is this a bunch of bull.
If it's a pretty horrible protocol, why has it become so popular? Is it possible that all or some of those design "flaws" you mentionned are necessary for it to do what it does? And if not, why have you not created your own, awesomer fileswarming protocol? In fact, why has nobody else?
And I'm really asking here. Not just disguising my attacks as questions.
No, I'm sorry. I'm not going to argue about the LEGALITY of what they have done. I'm sure they covered their asses with all those EULA and TOS things nobody ever reads. I'm not even going to argue that they are evil-er than other mail hosting companies. i know hotmail deleted one of my accounts after 30 days of non-use a few years back (do they still do this?). And yes, I know that backing up your emails is a sound and prudent thing to do (that practically nobody actually does).
The bottom line is that deleting someone's emails after 30 days of inactivity is ethically WRONG. Period. It's just a really assholish, greedy thing to do and I would be mightily and righteously pissed off if they did it to me. These are EMAILS we're talking about. A few compressed Megs, not a huge strain on the system. The only reason such policies are in effect is to legally hold your emails hostage unless you pay for ludicrously overpriced "premium packages".
A year of inactivity before deleting emails seems like a much more sensible policy to me. I would have sided with Lycos in that case. As it stands, they're the bad guys.
So you penalize the people who give you more than one week's notice? If I give you two my two week notice, fully expecting to work AND GET PAID for 2 weeks, you let me go the same day and only pay me one week?
Ahh. Well thank you for clearing that up! How did I not realize I could play fairplay protected songs on a $1600 device with a 3-Hour battery. Obviously, the iPod is not the only one. Oh! Oh! And what about the motorola ROKR? Eh? Now there is another portable alternative for me.
So thank you. Thank you for enlightening us all. I'll go and buy myself a ROKR. Right after I send a letter to Norway's ombudsman and a donation to Apple Europe to support them in the good fight.
Ladies and gentleman, I submit to you for consideration what I think would be a great addition to the growing library of Slashdot-cliches:
Oh, bull! People just want a good ending, period. You know, I read books, I've read thousands of novels and seen all kinds of endings, from the crappy to the great (The Carpet Makers had a great ending. Go read it, magnificent book). NS is among my favorite authors (snowcrash, diamond age and cryptonomicon are all fantastic books) but his endings kinda suck. That's just the way it is, there is no genius to them we cannot comprehend. They're just not good.
3) And speaking of Wii, The apple phone has built in blue tooth and accelerometers, plus all sorts of gripping hand input modes. I wonder if it can do absolute positioning in space--maybe with that camera on the back. if so then this woul dbe an awesome game controller. rig this the the iTV (not the wii) and apple is set. Now the price looks even cheaper since you already have the home computer--if it can do the wiii thing too well bite me. Of course you'll need a couple input devices..
I'm surprised you'd say something so stupid after a nice, coherent post. Come on dude...what were you thinking?
See, it's stuff like this that turns people off of politics. One can only take so many frustrations and disappointments without starting to get ulcers and herpes.
Newshosting offers 70 days retention for $20/month (45 days for $15/month), unlimited downloads and maxes out my 6Mbps line. I know there is at least one or two other providers with similar retentions (but possibly higher prices and/or limited Gigs/month)
It's the sound of fresh, original games dying. Yeah, they gave us Viewtiful Joe, Okami and Godhand. All critically acclaimed games. Let's shut them down!
I've tried HD. It's good, it's really worth it, it really makes a huge difference in graphical quality. Of course gamers want HDTV, they just might not be able to afford it. But they will be within 2 years, guaranteed. Heck, HDTVs are already available at walmart for less than $500.
Hahahaha. Awesomeness! Thank you very much for the laugh.

Well, I have to say that was a great comment and a great explanation. Thank you!

... definitely, definitely. What? A slashdot cliché I am not aware of! Does this mean there is yet hope for me? So...what does it mean?
Very funny, anonymous coward. I welcome you to my slashdot hall of fame.
Brilliant comment. Please stay here and post often. /added to my slashdot hall of fame.
What a great post! Consider yourself added to my slashdot hall of fame, sir!
And thank you for the laugh.

That doesn't seem very smart to me.

"Don't forget about the OQO!".
A very well written post. I cannot help but find myself agreeing with it, even though I smell a hint of demagogy in there.
I had always wondered what the deal with tenure was. Thank you for your excellent post. It was very informative.

most chose to develop for the slightly less powerful and far more developer-friendly PlayStation.
That is utter bullshit. The saturn was much better at 2D whereas the PSone totally trounced it in 3D. And 95% of the games were 3D.

Thank you for making me laugh out loud! Great post!
Gamestop and 1up gave it an 8.

They call it Pwnage.
