  2. I have plagiariazed and cheated on Which Grad Students Cheat the Most? · · Score: 1

I'm a computer science major and I have plagiarized and cheated in the past.

It was not that often and it was always for convenience, not because I needed it. Sometimes, I had to write papers which had no purpose other than making sure I read something--Like those biology papers about phosphate's role in plants. It annoys me. And it is not because it impugnated my honesty or some such romantic nonsense. It annoyed me because it was unneeded. Unlike some, it takes me effort and time to write up 4 or 6 pages on something. I am a perfectionist. I am psychologically unable to just type crud away at 20 WPMs. And so I must waste countless hourse of my time trying to paraphrase several sources as best I can. That doesn't teach me biology, it teaches me HOW TO PARAPHRASE! And That's only useful to slashdot editors, not to a biologist. He could've just tested me on it and saved me the pain.

On the other hand, I have never cheated on papers which addressed something actually worthwile. I have written some essays about my friends and family, videogames and drugs, plays and books. They were not easy to write, but when I finished them, they meant something to me. I felt the writer's satisfaction. I'm a pretty good writer; Not good enough to write books, but good enough to get As and Bs on english essays. As you'll have noticed, my punctuation sucks.

As far as cheating on tests goes, I almost never do it. Once, I did it because one of my professors was a really horrible teacher (but a nice guy!). The entire class had signed a petition against him within a month and over half of them were cheating in the final. It has NEVER happened before. I worked pretty hard to no avail, cheated on the last test and passed with a C in the class. I am so glad I cheated and passed. I went on to get an easy A in the harder course on the same topic, without cheating. Other than that, I did a few dozen times out of tens of thousands. Most of them were formulas since I have a hard time memorizing those.

Of course, I recognize that many do not share my motives. But then, that's just the world we live in, ain' it?

  3. People lie. on Bank Accounts of 5,000 UK Terror Suspects Tracked · · Score: 2, Insightful

25% believe that the 7/7 bombings were justified. Ok, this one looks bad. It can be explained by the U.K's collaboration with the U.S regarding the war in Iraq. Many muslims don't stomach all those tens of thousands of deaths due to collateral damage and will hold countries responsible. And maybe lash out in a poll. Doesn't mean they'll actually support terrorism. Only an idiot would think that. 45%+ of quebec residents favored secession, yet they never demolished bridges and blocked streets with burning tires. Opinion does not equal action. And 75% of muslims were against the attacks. That's a bigger percentage than the number of europeans who are against racism according to the last french and austrian elections among others. And racism is a much, much , MUCH bigger problem than terrorism. We don't freeze THOSE people's bank accounts though, do we?

Only one in four think Britain is their country? So what? You think those people are going to simply renounce their country of origin? People are proud, even those that come from third world countries. Who CARES if they view GB as their country. Their children will. And that'll be the end of that. That's the way it ALWAYS works with immigrants.

30% of muslims would prefer to live under sharia law? Meaning islamic law? ONLY 30%? Wow, that's great. Isn't it? 70% of muslims PREFER A SECULAR GOVERNMENT! What's the problem?

15% of muslims say that given the choice, they'd move to a country governed by shari'a laws. Well then, they are lying. There is nothing stopping them. Here's Morocco, here's Algeria, Yemen, Tunisia, Egypt, ad infinitum, why don't they move there? I know for a fact they don't need visas to go there. What does that say about the 30% that'd prefer a sharia government? Might they ALSO be lying? *GASP*. Hard to believe, but people lie in polls. Google that and find out for yourself.

28% hope for the U.K to become an islamic state. And these are muslims we're talking about. How many christians do you think would be in favor of living in a christian state? EH? Should we monitor THEIR bank accounts? What a stupid question to ask. This is trolling if i've ever seen it

That poll was designed to make muslims look bad. Stop spreading FUD.

Theft is universally morally wrong (Robinhood-like exceptions notwithstanding). It's a very simple, well-understood, very OLD concept. Whether I'm stealing your dead bird, your land or your mp3 player, the concept of theft remains the same. I forcefully, illegally confiscated your tangible, legitimate property therefore directly enriching myself and impoverishing you.

Copyright Infringement, in the other hand is a NEW crime. A civil offense. It had its drawbacks but variants of it were adopted anyways at certain times to try and encourage artists and reward creators much like the patent system was invented to encourage and reward inventors. It is NOT universally, morally wrong. It is also a set of laws that can and SHOULD be altered or abolished if, at any given time, it is not in the interest of the public at large.

Nowadays, greedy corporations use mob-like tactics , bullshit propaganda (don't copy our movies or this poor sound technician will be out of his job and then his family will starve! Think of the children!) and have successfully lobbied politicians with the gobs of money they are making (despite all the rampant piracy they complain about) to make copying movies, songs and programs worse than beating and raping people. The laws on the books are now extremely pro-corporations. Those very same corporations who will act in the worst possible fashion to make a buck (stuff like selling AIDS-tainted medicine so as not to lose money on it). In fact, whenever the law ends up criminalizing ridiculously large numbers of people who are otherwise no threat to the fabric of society to make a few happy (Think prohibition), they are wrong and should not be respected.

    Period.

    This won't apply to Bluray/HD-DVDs.

People were drawn to DVDs for porn not only because of the better picture but also because the instant seeking capabilities. The camera angles were another interesting thing but they turned out to be mostly nonexistent.

Ontop of that, broadband has spread and people are now getting their porn from the internet (through paid sites and p2p). Empornium is huge for instance.

The only thing HD discs have going for them now is the higher definition and that's definitely not enough to decide this battle so I think porn has stopped being a major factor.
