Apple is a designer's company, not a marketing company. If you want a good example of a marketing company, look at Microsoft.

As for Apple being celebrated on Slashdot, are you fucking high? Apple is the most reviled and bashed company by far here.

The Mac has always been treated as a fundamentally different platform to iOS. And iOS developers will still need a Mac to actually develop apps, so obviously the Mac will not be a mandatory walled garden.

It's like looking at Steam for Windows and screaming that Windows is going to be locked down. It's idiotic.

Interesting take, but I don't think differentiating hardware is really a big thing on the iPhone anyway -- if anything, Apple devices often have less features. Apple took the lead with the Retina Display for now, but the others will soon catch up.

He's not worried -- Jobs doesn't worry, he just makes plans to further dominate. Sure, he sees Android as a potent threat, but he's got the situation well under control.

Apple doesn't want any part of a race to the bottom, and Apple will stay and continue to be successful within their profitable sector. I think it's pointless for anyone (Jobs included) to compare iPhone vs. Android figures -- iPhone will always have a lower total share of the market, but Apple will still dominate the profits. It'll be like the Mac vs. the rest of the personal computing industry.

I always hear Flash advocates say that Flash is fully accessible but I'm not sure how that stacks up in practice, since I understand that the developers have to put in the effort to actually make it accessible.

Also, when you say most websites are a complete disaster, are you referring to websites which don't validate and aren't coded to web standards? There's been a web standards revolution over the last 5-6 years and more and more sites are now being coded "properly" so I imagine the situation is better now than it used to be.

Slashdot is positively Apple-friendly by comparison.

So I don't really see where the supposed "media love" for Apple is coming from.

Personally, I think it's all about pageviews and eyeballs. Post something about Apple, and the hordes of fans and haters descend to make their mark.
