Hmm, and how exactly do you plan to get another linux disto to run on Sony's PS2's R5900, a.k.a Emotion Engine architechture? Huh? Didn't think about that did ya? Foolish
They are right. I am a freshman computer engineering student, and even though it is difficult, it is definately worth it. I have a natural luv for computers, hardware specifically over software, and love learning about different computer architechtures. Computer Engineers learn a lot about lower level software programming towards hardware, and are digital systems kings just like Electrical engineering students are analoq kings. Also, the salaries are amazing for computer engineers. You really have to like computer engineering, though, to be successfull
Well, I am a freshman Computer Engineering Student. The CS dept at my University, Rochester Institute of Technology, is all Solaris 8. Since CS is a major part of my computer engineering curriculum, I am gaining a lot of experience with Solaris 8 & Sun workstations. I must say that it is nice. We have many powerful Sun Enterprise 450 servers, and using X Window is pretty fast from my laptop in my dorm running Windows XP. My computer engineering dept. is heavy on HP-UX, but I have not had much experience at all on them. We also have other Unix systems. It is just mostly our IT dept and our Software Engineering dept that code under windows.
Ok, I am just trying to point out to you all why Sony is doing this. It is from a business perspective. Now, this situation is similar to MP3's. First of all, I absolutely hate the RIAA, and think they suck. Their tacktics are horrible, and I wish they would go away. MP3's are not illegal, but most people encode music that should have been purchased as a CD in the MP3 format. I would be totally against the banning of MP3's, and understand both sides of the picture here, so don't think I am one sided. The only point I am trying to make is that Sony is doing this to stop piracy. Not to stop Legal purchased imports. I for one think that even if all PS2 mod chip companies were banned, people still can play copied PS2 games via software patches. I seriously doubt all of you play PS2 legal imports from other contries. You probably play copies. That's understandable. PS2 software is expensive. Same situation with CD's. That's why all these file transfer programs are popular. There are two sides to these new cases of computer hardware/software issues.
The point is the main use for a mod chip is for copying. I think mod chips are ok if they are just used to play imports. Copying is where the problem is. That's all. This is why Sony has an issue. Come on, is it really that hard to understand. I am not saying they should crush mod developers. I am just trying to make you all see a point here from a Business perspective.
Also, people, stop with these STUPID car examples. You CANNOT compare modifications of a car to a Computer, such as PS2. If a mod chip could not allow people to play copied PS2 games, and only officlal PS2 imports, Sony probably would not have this problem with mod chips. Also, to the FOOL who wants to know: Sony owns the rights to PS2's architechture and has a patent on PS2's architechture. Why is it all of you fail to see the validity of my topic?? Are you all really that closed minded and ignorant? Goodness. This is a pretty pathetic bunch.
It was really immature to call me that. Potential Money that could be made is being lost. Please don't ever post again if you can't use that thing in your head called a BRAIN, if indeed you have one. I feel really sorry for ya.
People, you all are not realizing this one important fact: That the PS2 architechture is Sony's closed architechture, and that other companies( mod chip companies) DO NOT have any legal right to make modifications to Sony's PS2 architechture without legal consent fron Sony. How hard is this for you people to understand?? If you were Sony, how would you like it if some other company modified you computer architechture without your consent? I would be pretty upset. Also, realize that the main goal behind this law suit against PS2 mod developers is to stop the piracy of games, and the ability to play copied PS2 games, whether on CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-RW, on the PS2. If you purchase forign games and need a moded US PS2, to bad. You suffer because the main reason people mod their PS2's are to play copied games. If you don't know by now, COMPANIES loose massive amounts of money on copied software. How hard is this to understand. Also, if you want to develope on your PS2, just try to obtain a PS2 Linux Kit like me. It is comming to the US and Europe also. No need to mod and void your warrenty. I hope that Sony works extremely hard at preventing people from modding PS3 when it comes out. With PSX, there was the development PSX, a.k.a Net Yaroze. With PS2, there is PS2 Linux. With PS3, Sony will continue their trend and release some form of hobby development for PS3. Relax.
Here at the Rochester Institute of Technology, I am an undergrade freshman Computer Engineering Student, and one of my CS2 professors here has developed a program more advanced than this one at Georgia Tech. It actually bypasses source code variable names and order, and deeply analyzes the structure of a program, and how the program operates. Much better anti-cheeting program, and has huge success rates. It still catches false cheeters, though. It's Not perfect. My CS2 professor brags about it.
Could this be the small start of multiplatform Viruses? Virus source code written and engineered to be Operating System independent is pretty deadly, depending on what the virus does. Imagine one virus rendering Windows XP, Sun Solaris 8, Red Hat Linux 7.1, AIX 5, MACOS X, HP-UX, and Irix unstable. Not trying to encourage any hackers here, but wouldn't Java be a very usful language to start developing multiplatform viruses in? Wondering. Also, has there been any attempt at coding a virus for any Anti-Virus software? Unfortunatelly, viruses are software technologies as well, and will keep on advancing.
not sure. I have the exact same question. Is it proprietry by Apple, because if this is Apple's proprietry vga, then I still don't get it. Why Apple?
12 inch IBOOK better than 14 inch IBOOK

New iMac Announced

· Score: 1
Watch to see how many people purchase an 14 inch display IBOOK instead of a 12 inch display one. Since both displays run at SXGA, the 12 inch display has a slightly better resolution. What would be a good argument in purchasing the 14 inch IBOOK? More arm rest room? Seriously?
Um, how does the 300 MHZ Emotion Engine in Playstation 2 compete with XBox's 733 MHZ Pentium III? DIFFERENT ARCHITECHTURES. Have you heard of FPU's? Vector Units? CPU stages? Integer Units(Well, in that case, the Pentium IV does win against the G4)? Man, I am not even going to start. This guy probably also goes around saying that XBox's CPU is more powerful than Playstation 2's. You have A LOT TO LEARN, man. So many people don't understand. I am a University Computer Engineering Student, but it does not take someone like to to get this simple point. Then again, most people, except techies, don't understand anything a bout computer architechtures.
Trust me, go with a Cannon, an Olympus, or a Sony Digital Camera. My sister just got a Sony DSC-P30. Geat camera for $300. My dad has a Sony DSC-S70 I believe. Great camera for $800(now costs $600). Look at Sony, Olympus, and Cannon. If you have the doe, you migh want to get one of the Sony CD Mavicas. Anyway, I am waiting for the PowerMac G5 so I can purchase one. I'll sit it next to my Dell Inspiron 8000. Right now, I am waiting for Playstation 2 Linux to get for my PS2.
To answer your question, PS2 Linux is first booted from the PS2 DVD-Rom. It is then set up on the PS2 HDD, and the last step is to copy the PS2 boot files to a PS2 memory card to make a bootable memory card. For more info, visit this thread at Gamedev.net that I had with someone.

What in the world are you talking about? What's up with OCT 18th huh??
I agree. It's not like they will request to their senior CS peers to utilize all Microsoft Products. I Hope :)
Uh, you really have an RS/6000??
Um, your an idiot. Try reading up on the specs of the Japanese PS2 Linux kit.
