>>What is worrying is you can only succeed if you make you product unable to be used for anything else.
Exactly. But at the same time your product must remain inter-operable with others on higher, meta-level: your game console should be able to connect to the Internet, your printer should be able to connect to various computers, etc.
So the result of these two trends will be the world of higly specialized nearly disposable devices you can plug in and out as needed.
Tinkering will be reduced to meta-tinkering and the ability to introduce new "device" to the net.
The reasons to use Java or.NET/C# are not because they are "trendy".
In either case, you get secure memory management, secure code signing / redistribution, remote objects, clean OOP, and many many things the absence of which causes so many problems/bugs/exploits in C/C++ world.
The question is not if, the question is when. Portions of Windows 2003 server are already in managed code. Longhorn will be 100%. What will Linux have at that time to counter it?
Continous flame wars about which set of bindings to use?
I was impressed by the thoughts expressed in the original article but some slashdotters plainly scare me. Linux has no chance on the desktop and will face the sunset on the server if the move to managed code does not happen.
Unix-style fragmentation won't kill Linux, but the thought fragmentation will.
Groove workspaces need a central server(s) to coordinate sharing. How would it work in an event of true security crisis?
And it is Windows only with major ties to Microsoft. If this news true, Microsoft will be entrenched there for decades.
Nice payoff for their original investment in Groove. Learn people.
I did not try this one, but upgrading my Fedora laptop to previously released 2.6.* kernels was piece of cake - just apt-get. Certainly nothing like Windows rebootfest.
It feels much more polished than current Mandrake or Fedora do. Everything seems to just work. My only problem with it on the desktop was outdated Mozilla (1.4) but I found an upgrade script. Package installation via Xandros networks is an excellent idea for those who would be scared by apt-get install cryptic-package-name.
I tried CrossOver and most of the stuff installs and runs, including Quicken and Internet Explorer. Seeing Windows Update running in KDE is truly scary. Fonts on Windows apps are terrible.
Now, on my laptop Xandros did not shine quite as well. Once again, no proper power management support. I know for a fact, that if I get a recent Fedora or Mandrake I can get the power management to work (after tons of twiking), but I would except Xandros to take care of it for me.
If I could suspend/hibernate my laptop with Xandros, i would have absolutely no reason to boot Windows anymore.
I have 3 boxes there and I want out.
If anyone knows for a fact about some other hosting company with comparable prices / service, please post below.
I am sure other/.ers would appreciate it too. No flames, just short info.

where does it say that?
from jdk 1.4 on my machine:

The impotent Microsoft search tools have been a blessing for many third-party vendors.

My friend's company makes search appliances - www.enterfind.com.
Basically it is a box you place on your network and you can tell it (via web interface) where your Windows (and others) shares are and how to get there and it goes and indexes document names and contents.
Then users can use search page to look for them. The box has Web Services, Java and.NET interfaces for your own applications too.
I dont think the ISS orbit was chosen to accomodate Russians.
It takes the least amount of fuel to put something in orbit if said orbit at the the same angle as lattitude of the place you are launching from.
51.6 degrees (ISS orbit) is lattitude of Baikonur, Russian space port. The space station was started by launching large building blocks by Russian D1 boosters. I do not think there is an equivalent to those in US. So the choice of orbit was natural to maximize the available technology.
wrong. Stalingrad (Volgograd) is about 1000km SE on the Volga river

To do just that in a small company environment, try enterfind
No you won't - it will be The Year Of Linux Desktop by then ;-)
it was not a "pretend real-life operating system"! ;-)
This is Unix! _I_ know this
Great comments. Someone with balls, please mod this up.

We do just that. enterfind search appliance

And remember, we are stll the people. It is not late to stop these things.

Some reports said this thing was actually moving

Multi-agency anti-terrorism information exchange; this ia a state-level program, outside of congress' control, and it is growing every day.

Easy - do you know how expensive Apple hardware / software is??? ;-)

yeah but would the article about a new roof over some dealership / autoplant appear on Slashdot?
