Slashdot is now a forum for discussing ony those things that you think to be socially redeeming? What a pompus ass you must be in the real world. Yup, the standard by which all opensource software projects will be judged against will henceforth be your 'socially redeeming value' litmus test. Thanks for opening our eyes.

This explains a few things, like, for instance why most SourceForge projects are still in "Phase 1 - Planning." Hey, if you find of any value the 14,654th replacement for biff or another MP3 player, etc... that's your fancy. It won't be my time that's wasted, I can guarantee you that.

By the way, the 'pompous ass' comment earned you a trip to my foes list.

I respect the "because it's there" mentality of getting Linux to run on anything

Unfortunately I don't think the 'because it's there' thought process will get anyone very far. At some point someone needs to realize that their time is worth more than needlessly wasting it on disassembling something with no value to them in the future whatsoever. I could take my television apart because I can as well; however outside of "WHOO HOO I TOOK APART MY TV!!! I AM SO SMART!" there is no socially redeeming value whatsoever. Just think what ELSE you could be doning with your time.

I think much of this X-Box shite has to do with the "sticking it to the man" beef that everyone around here seems to have with Microsoft. But seriously, they are not taking a cut anymore, I can pretty much assure you of that. Sure people could run Linux on their toaster if they really wanted to, but there is no socially redeeming value to doing that either.

Run ethernet to all the houses. Maybe you want to run fiber in between and stick a transceiver at each end, for future expansion. Run them all into a Cisco and use packet-shaping to put bandwidth limitations on each house. Run them all into a pair of T1s and whee, fast internet access. (Probably won't be as fast as cable though since you probably can't pay for lots of bandwidth... for example, my local cable for example is faster than a T1 at times.)

I have a hard time buying this. I just shut down two of my Windows 2000 boxes for summer break. They have been up for 85 1/2 days... that's 99.999% uptime. I haven't rebooted nor shut them down since I built them.

They do Windows Media stuff. They've transfered terabytes of data in this time. I've never had a single problem with the machine. In fact they've sat headless for all this time.

I had an entertaining conversation with a Linux-freak last night. I told him about my uptime and in a typical lofty voice I heard, "You must be running Linux, right?"

Well he almost had a heart attack when I told him that it was Windows 2000. Typical.

Neither. Balanced uses 3 wires... it works kind of like an AC signal. There is a + signal, a - signal, and a ground wire. So both wires from each pair per channel. A standard two-channel device would use 5 wires (2x+/- and a ground).

Nah, use CAT5 + a shield, use the shield for ground, and use two twisted pairs for +/- for the two channels. You have two twisted pairs left over for whatever you please.

Most new studios built today (I should know, I'm doing a renovation right now ;-) are run with CAT5 for the audio... the 100 ohm falls within the AES spec, and is still fine for balanced signals.

Make sure you have a shield, though.

I think we can all pretty much agree that Michael's a complete fucktard. What really baffles me is that he's still allowed free reign on this site. There seems to be no journalistic integrity when he posts a story. This one reeks of whining child. The phrase "although that hasn't stopped you from submitting stories about it, oh no" just warrants a kick or two to the nuts. How childish can this guy get? And this is a supposed "news" site? If anyone at Andover is listening, this guy is a complete tool, and I'm not surprised that he could very well be one of the reasons this site doesn't have very many subscribers. If you don't want your site to crash and burn like a car wreck, don't let an immature child behind the wheel.

This guy should have been fired long ago. Apparently that little fiasco he caused over at censorware.org (you still hijacking that domain?) wasn't enough to make anyone notice. This story in and of itself is enough to prove how much of a tool this guy is.

Or maybe he's just a little pissed that Microsoft is in the news so much. You know, Michael, the communists used to control their news media too. When you run a website like this you should publish impartial news stories and let the readers bitch about what's right and what's wrong. But hey, I guess you'd blow your top too if you kept hiding the news from the public for so long.

BTW, this is 1337th post. What a topic to post it under.
