They didn't decide anything by their own, the ribbon was designed using hundreds of gigabytes of collected user behavior. Office 2003 had an improvement participation program that if accepted would send UI usage to Microsoft, and after collecting enough information they discovered less than 10% of the users actually customized their toolbars. Also 70% of the features requested by business were already built in 2003 but most people couldn't find them, so Microsoft took the decision to redesign the UI to benefit most of the users, and they did a great job in fact, beta versions of Office collected the number of mouse click a user made in a day, and the amount of clicks with the new UI dropped by a 50%.

You are assuming that users want to customize their toolbars, maybe because you do, but Microsoft with real user data determinated that 90% of the users don't customize the toolbars and can't find many of the things they wanted to do. I'm glad you are not in charge of a UI used by millions of persons, you would screw them up and create a useless, overgeeked crap of UI.

Not really, I agree with Steve McConnell when in his book "Code Complete" (2nd edition) says that you shouldn't programm in a language but INTO a language.

Most of the important programming principles not on an specific language but on the way one use them. Don't limit your programming thinking only on the concepts that are supported automatically by your language. The best programmers think of what they want to do, and then they assess how to accomplish their objectives with the programming tools at their disposal. (McConnell 843)

I don't care what anyone says, C# is way better than Java. And I have ~5 years experience with Java, 6 months experience with C#. It converted me in no time. C# is very pleasant and the language just seems to get out of your way when you want to do something, largely because of the .Net framework.

I agree C# is better than Java but I don't like both, I know you don't need to cover your traces when dealing with memory and dynamic allocation, but you are sacrificing quite a bit of processor time and system memory in the process. Garbage collectors and every other tool meant to make programming easy costs heavily in time and hardware. Most probably you are going to say that now days computers are fast enough to pay the toll but that is true only for certain cases. Think about AI, speech recognition (even an OS) and many other processor demanding tasks, you would like to use wisely every tick of the clock... As always the method to solve the problem is in the problem itself, but I personally would like to spend my days developing something more significant than a monthly savings report for McDonalds so I'm glad to take my time, use my brain and continue developing on C++.

So we may not always like Microsoft's products in every way, and we may downright hate some of their business practices. Does that make Visual Studio and C# any worse of a product? Does that make Microsoft Word a worse word processor? NO.

No, it doesn't, but as business practices go you can be damn sure they are going to struggle to suck your money up with incompatibilities, upgrades and what else.
