  1. Smaller Discs, Protective Casing on Tech Titans Prepare to Battle Over Next DVD Format · · Score: 2, Interesting

I reckon whatever method ends up being used should have a) smaller discs and b) protective casing.

Although there good in the way they hold lots and lots of quite quick to access information, I think CD's and DVD's are some of the crappiest pieces of technology about. There clunky, just to big to hold easily in your hand (escpecially if your female) and get scratched so, so easy its pathetic. What percentage of your games/music CD's from say 6 years ago isn't scratched?

The best format for holding such data I have seen was on that Sylvester Stallone movie "Demolition Man", at some point on that you see Sandra Bullock use something which is like 4 minidisc's stacked on top of each other.

Surely in Open Source Development however there must be a more optimal solution where volumes of code and features don't have to be duplicated just because there developed in slightly different enviroments and the advantages of the various competition options can be atleast slightly combined? ...without creating another project fork ofcourse!

I agree totally, the problem with a lot of forking in Open Source, is its not functionality/ideology based. Rather, all to often it is just down to independant projects working independantly.

Sure, independance has its good points, more competition leads to better software. But as stated, look at gnome and kde (although technically not forks, the same applies).

Both are virtually indentical to the end user in terms of features etc. yet both have had mountains of duplicate code doing the same thing in each, just a slightly different way.

Forking is a massive problem in OSS, the amount of hours that must be waisted by Open Source Developers basically duplicating code already written somewhere else for a virtually identical but slightly different project is depressing.

If only Linux code could be made more standardised, modular and encapsulated the world would be a better place.

I had always sort of them as being extremely expensive but the ones in the shop (which sells both Windows and Mac computers) were about the same price as the Windows ones.

The major problem is that as the sales guy explained to me, people don't realise a 800mhz G4 is far better than say a 1.5Ghz Pentium however when people see the 800mhz mac costing more than the 1.4 ghz PC they obviously go for the PC.

Kind of reminds me of the old saying that if it wasn't for Apple's pathetic marketing practises they would be the dominant software company of today (whether that is good or bad I don't know).

However, I think that for novice users who arn't quite ready to use Linux as a desktop (in its current form), then they should be recommended a Mac as they are atleast half way there and all competition is good for the computer industry, better than everyone dominated by one large monopoly anyway.
