A rumored version of AIX? It most definitely exists, however, it only runs on MCA machines, last I heard. Ask around on the appropriate newsgroups, someone will have a copy of it.
You certain about that? Sun sells machines which have more CPUs installed then you pay for. The extra processors are just not turned on, if you later need more power, you buy the processors off of them, and they turn the additional chips on. I think that what they are saying, is that you wont be charged for the processors that are turned off.
The issue was with UltraSPARC IIs, and was only present in the 8mb cache modules. If I remember correctly, they traced the issues to problems in the IBM memory they had been buying, which ended up being faulty, but Sun caught the full blame for it. Supposedly all the UltraSPARC III chips cannot have that problem, although I cannot remember if it is because the cache is mirrored, or if it is ECC, or both.
Shit. This means that my SC2000 (http://www.sunstuff.org/hardware/systems/sun4/)is now useless for running Solaris 9. Right now it only has 4 processors, but I have boards for 6 chips, and I was thinking about upgrading to a full 20 soon. This kind of pisses me off, as it now means that I am limited (cost wise) to only running a few chips. I bet the licensing moving to this new system really screws owners of those 64 processor CS6400 machines. And to top it off, the xdbus machines are not supported by Net or OpenBSD (last I looked).
So I now have 800lbs of machine sitting in my house, and I can't afford to put the most recent version of Solaris on it. Anyone want it?
I don't know about that. After reading through all of Salons articles (mentioned elsewere in the comments), I don't think I could support Clear Channel even if their local rock station (DC101) played original stuff. There are widespread complaints of sexual harassment against the company, and specific members of their upper management, there is evidence that they don't follow through on employment contracts, and finally, they do the whole payola thing, only allowing stations to play unpaid for music after 10pm.
I'll pass on all of that, and stick with CDs and NPR.
Last I heard, the 280R was the lowest end rackable UltraSPARC III machine. Comparing 1ghz G4s to Netra T1s, which are in a similar price category would be a more cost concious comparison, although the T1s would be butchered. Oh yeah, and the 280R has 2 processors, not 4.
Maybe its just due to all my time working on Sun and HP boxes, but how are you supposed to interface with this? You can either go the KVM route, which I find cumbersome and impractical (I only ever see it set up for Win NT boxes), or you can set up a terminal server... but there is no serial line.
I havn't looked at Mac boxes in a while, so how are you supposed to connect to this (without running SSH or Telnet on every Apple box in your server room).
I've read a novel by Severna Park, and I am also puzzled as to how anything written by that person could get an award.
I suppose the Nebulas are really just political gesturing by now, so we shouldn't have expected anything else from them.
I hate to break this to some of you, but China presently has a negative birthrate, they are dealing with their problems, although, they are doing it in a manner which is unacceptable to many religions/people. Where are all these "booming population" remarks coming from? Admitedly, there are a lot of people there right now, but if they are correcting the problem, should we criticize them?
Bah, the movie didn't even have any decent one liners, we were forced to create our own at a screening, while only partially accurate "Now thats how you smoke a cuban" took the crown.
Im afraid that that is mostly a theoretical consideration, I run a few tons of computers in my house which are not FCC certified for residential usage, and I've never had problems, nor have any other mini/mainframe-collectors I've met. Of course, in theory, if your neighbors have problems, and complain specifically about you (although you are probably not an issue), the FCC could require you to comply, I have never heard of it happening.
Didn't the XB-70a have problems with its landing gear cathing fire? I remember that they had a lot of problems with the wheels locking up and burning, and so it never entered production.
I dunno,
I feel as though, while spam is an annoyance, placing a block on how information can be disseminated (sic?) is wrong. And where do you draw the line? By that measure, we should have placed limits on telemarketers long ago. On the other hand, if someone were to go spray paint an advertisement on the side of a bus, it would be illegal, as you would be damaging the bus system (much like how if you send out spam, you are placing a load, and therefore costing SOMEONE money, on a mail server somewhere). So there are precedents both ways.
Microoptical (http://www.microopticalcorp.com/), sells 640x480 monoculars that use half a watt, one of those, combined with a gamecube would be really nifty. Split screen would be out though, unless you were to drop a splitter into the video line and buy a second display.
UNIX on VAX? When did this happen?

AIX, NetBSD, HP-UX, OpenBSD, Irix, and FreeBSD...
Thats just an internal name, like "Tualitin", or "Clawhammer".

And don't forget to put extra high ceilings into at least one room, so that you can accomadate large racks and raised flooring later...
