I suspect that most opposition to this is merely knee-jerk reaction to biometrics.

For me, it's just a knee-jerk reaction to McDonald. Once, while I was on vacation in London, I went inside a McDonald and there were employee report cards posted on its wall. Each report had the name and the picture of each employee, plus a certain percentage was assigned to each behavior they were supposed to accomplish.

Did the employee smile when greeting the customer? 70%
    Was the employee courteous? 80%
    etc.

Those things had purposefully been posted so that all the customers could read them. Some employees had very high grades and some had very low ones. It had to be one of the stupidest thing I have ever seen. I don't see why in the hell they wanted their customers to see all of this.

Great choice of metaphor. Others would probably have compared this to the possession of an identity card which was not yours and a reputation which was not yours, but somehow your creative mind managed to find a metaphor that completely ignored those two little facts.

Would you mind if I borrowed your reputation and an official copy of your birth certificate? I swear I'm only going to use your reputation and your identity when I'm in a foreign country. This shouldn't matter to you, right? You'll probably never go to that foreign country anyway. And since everyone else is doing this already, your reputation won't really be tarnished because most people know that identity cards are meaningless anyway. So what do you say? Will you let me use all that wasted potential?

For mailing lists and whatnot, you can also just use spamgourmet.com, once you understand how it works, it's kind of simpler because you only need to remember one email address.

One thing that I might try if/when I'm a parent is to force my kids to do a written report on anything they watch on television. If this idea doesn't work, my kids won't get to watch television. I know this idea sounds like a sacrilege to some of you parents out there, but living without a television is not such a big deal -- I've been television free for four years now.

Under the current system and under certain circumstances you can sue for punitive damages in addition to the damages made to your car. In my view, that's much better than getting the police to issue a ticket because you get to keep the money and the burden of proof on your part is much lighter to make.

Of course, I wouldn't count on receiving punitive damages if the accident was just an honest mistake. Mistakes happen. We're only humans. I'm sure paying for the repairs was more than an adequate punishment for the person who committed the mistake.

If this happens again, make sure you go to a repair place which is not approved/suggested by your insurance company and be sure to request brandnew and brandname replacement parts and last but not least you will have to inspect them for authenticity before they get installed.
