Softbank is the Microsoft of Japan. They own software, hardware, game and publishing companies (amost others). They have capital and invest in USA and Europe. This Internet setup is probably just to amuse the president's daughter.
I lived in Japan and I had more money in my bank account then what I have now(!)
It is expensive but not that bad. Besides, you get pay (very well) in Yen so no problems...There used to be plenty of english only techies jobs for 40-50K per year. I start to regret that I left...
This would probably work in dense areas like NYC. Otherwise the cost of wiring each and everyhouse would be prohibitive. Some areas in Tokyo are really dense, you can bend over from your balcony and touch your neighbourg's house. On the other side, in the USA, you have places where you have very large lots where you have 40 feet between each house.
Make a quick calculation and using the same area, you can probably wire 50 house in a normal street house while I bet you can wire 300+ in a dense appartment area in Japan.
Fiber *IS* cheap but it coast big bucks to bury it, do the end user installs, etc...
Hmm.. ever tried buying a Mac at Bestbuy...? As far as SGI gear, I can imagine the poor (uneducated rep) asking you: "shall we charge your bestbuy credit card on this $24,999.95 order sir?"
Interested in an extended warranty plan for only $8900?
Both companies use the same technology yet if you had the choice, which one would you buy (if you could afford)?
For some people, the price doesn't matter and 1 second is worth that price. For others, they would rather buy many fords and consider that "hey, I made a good deal".
Sure, your ford will take you to your 7-11 and even go on the highway at 55 Mph, but other than that, if you want kick ass performance, you'll need a Ferrari. A corvette might give you pretty good performance but still, there's always something better behind a company that devote itself at building high-end cars.
Now just think the same way using computers... Got it?
Apparently, this machine has multiple AGP busses. This is clearly an advantage as even though commodity hardware is being used, no one else provides a multiple-AGP bus system (that I know of).
Knowing how SGI is good at IO, I'm ready to bet that each bus is independent and not shared, making this harder for any competitor.
True, ATI and Nvidia have a complete army of engineers devoting their entire work on a few chips. A computer such as this one requires many chips and it would be quite hard to compete with ATi unless you spend/invest the same amount of money. Why reinvent the wheel?
Why is it so important to you for Americans to know where every 2nd and 3rd world country is? I'm sure you couldn't name every country out there, much less point them all out.
There's a reason why there's no shipment outside USA: They don't give a crap.
Now that's a nice attitude. You only care about "liberating" 3rd world countries do you?
Al Gore decided to rename the confusing acronym WWW (World Wide Web) to AAA (America's Amazing Amass).
Don't forget to rename your sites to aaa.company.com
After this break, more news about Al Gore sueing Gutenberg over patent infrightment. We all know that Al Gore invented writing and is now seeking damage from all publishers.
Why do you think the cable companies fought like hell when a canadian company decided to broadcast online?
They are afraid to lose all those advertising dollars. Do you think the mom and pop shops will pay cash if they know most people don't even see their adds because they're watching a canadian broadcast? Phone companies saw the move and they now own most backbones. The cable companies (except AOL/TW) are still way behind.
I believe that in the short future, there won't be cable/phone companies anymore but simply connectivity companies. Time to seel your cable companies stocks while they're still worth something...
Well there are some hardware solutions available at expensive/hi-end stores and I think that a PC can perform this job very easily.
If you live in an appartment, it's probably hard to justify the cost/reason, but I'm in a house and I would also like to wire each room. You know, play kids songs downstairs, rock in the garage while the wife listens to internet radio. Why not? Why can't we have the technology to do it. I don't think decoding 3-4 MP3 streams would be so hard on CPU usage anymore.
Ultimately, it would be great to do the same with a graphic card (kinda like an Xserver, but not over IP). It would be great to send a video stream to "video card #2" and a fish tank picture to "video card #4" displayed on that flat screen on your wall:) Oh don't forget video conference over IP in the kitchen to call your mom... That would truly be multi-media, not uni-media like what we have today...
We have kickass CPUs, why can't we have kickass expandable sound and multi-pipe graphic without having to buy an SGI machine?
I worked in Japan in the past and...
on
Working Hard?

Boy is life easy in the US. Why complain? Just be happy that you have a job and tough it dude...
I switched from 12-14 hours a day jobs in Japan (plus 2h train) to a quiet 9-5 job here in the US. I switched from no vacations to a nice 15 days a year vacation. I worked over y2k overnight. Here, there's no one to complain if a server crashes over the weekend. Ok, I earned a sh!tload of money but was it worth it? I think so but then again, I consider myself a mild workaholic.
Heck, I even got married over the weekend over there and no one was surprised that I didn't go for a honeymoon. Never took a sick day (so anybody else did). Even went to work when I badly twisted my ankle. I can tell you that over there, everyone works hard. It's a dog eat dog world.
I think that USA's economy is going down the drain and if you guys want to kick it up, it won't be done by getting more vacation days. Don't you think?
I thought it would be great to have multiple outputs on soundcards. Why have 4-5 cards when you can easily have a pigtail with RCA connectors (or 1/8 connectors). It should be possible and would solve those issues. Imagine playing a DVD on your TV while someone else listens to MP3's
Software wise, it shouldn't be harder than controling multiple NIC's. Soundcards could be seen as "streams" and you could send the audio to any/all. Heck you could even have some kind of multicast to remind everyone of special events (blue light special? err.. dinner is ready).
Unfortunately, the company I contacted couldn't care less about my idea.... Or maybe they simply took it and are working on it now?:)
That sounds fishy. Will we find some accounting "issues" in a few years? Why would you buy $1/2 B via a reseller? There's something behind this. I think someone's getting a retirement plan setup...
Bigmac's were about $3 last time I checked. Why eat a bigmac in Japan? It's like trying to eat fresh sushi in Montana. Forget about it...

Please do yourself a favor and dump that O2 now dude....
Yeah, just like my '86 car is getting rusty and I wonder why my '04 isn't?
well a computer must be beige and ugly, why do you ask?
How revelent is Ferrari vs. Ford?

Where a certified accountant needs to check and make sure everything is up to a certain standard.
That's good news, more IT jobs coming up?

Yes true and in fact, even DSL is available at 12 Mbps (for about $25), not a whimpy 1.5Mbps (which is more like 500-700k in my case)
The company is in France but if you take a look at the site (did you?) there are models for america, europe and africa (PAL, SECAM and NTSC).
Those are at rental places dudes...
