Not sure if this is in the same area but I'm fighting to get the actual media. The company claims that the recovery CD *IS* the media but we all know it's not.
Anyone actually received a real media from their dealer, manufacturer or microsoft?
Get an inverter, a regular PC (in a smaller case) and attach everything in the truck.
That's what I did. I ran cabling under the seats and through the foldable backseats. You don't see any cabling. Screwed 4 hooks on the back of the backseat and used bungie cords to attach the PC on the back. My PC is a regular P3 800 and not a whimpy 266 Mhz. Got wireless to upload MP3 and emm.. "test" other nets too:) Got a corded/custom (for MP3s) and a regular (but cordless) keyboard that I can put away.
Then I have a small TFT with velcro on the back. That way, I can put it under the seat when I'm parked at the mall. Got full internet access (at home or close to a starbucks, etc), MP3, DivX and DVD playback.
Things I want to try: GPS navigation, internet through my cellphone provider, get a TV/radio card. Why radio? So that I can easily switch from radio to MP3 with a single button:-)
Total cost? I haven't calculated as I already had a lot of parts. I paid for the inverter, small computer case, LCD and an extra wireless keyboard. So less than $200
One trick: put the interver in the truck. That way you won't hear the noise. I can only hear the PC noise when the car is idle. When it's moving, I don't hear anything.
Users are idiots. They need to be informed somehow. Who's at fault here? I think it's the user. If you buy a car and drive in the lake pretending you didn't know it would sink, well too bad, you lost your car. If you spill coffee on you well it's your...err.. no it's McDonalds fault for not telling you that coffee *IS* hot.
I mean, come on, this screams 100% idiocy. Why on earth would you do sensitive stuff on a public terminal is beyond me. Why not pay your bills using a credit card and using transparent enveloppes?
What if other kids installed some software on your Pc to show your own kid how to share files? Who's to blame? The other parents?
What if your own kid went to the neighboor and installed those software? Who's to blame? You? Them? Both?
I think fair use/knowledge is at risk. It's like leaving a shovel in the backyard. If someone takes it and kills someone, who's to blame? You can't ignore the law but can't you defend yourself by saying that it's fair use to leave a shovel in the backyard?
What if your 16 years old kid kills someone while driving? I've never seen any parent go to jail for that. Even cold blooded murder! (well unless there is clearly wrong down from them like leaving an unlocked and loaded weapon).
Let's say I steal something and have it delivered. Will the RIAA go against the postal office because I used that medium to steal something? No.
Why would they go against parents in *that* case?
What about kidnappers, are the kidnapper's parents bothered? Not a single bit. They probably have to move out of state due to shame but that's another story.
Same with a computer. It's fair to have a computer and use it. You can't be responsible for other people's actions to a certain degree. You can setup URL filters and stuff like that but I think the judge will agree that you can't "lock down" a computer and monitor each and every actions.
Maybe not in 2050, but let's say in 2200. Let's give the guy another 150 years. Heck, look 200 years ago. We were fighting with sticks and electricity, well huh? what? elecwhat?
So I think this is a faily reasonable possibility. The BIG problem is what will people do for a "living"? I always thought that humans shouldn't do crappy jobs but focus on high level jobs (like doctors for example, and even this is becoming more and more automated). Manufacturers should use more robots and let humans "relax" (we're lazy by nature anyway) and concentrate on higher learning. Go to school longer, etc.. People leave school because they need money, etc..
So if you have 300 millions people not working, how to you create a social life around them? You'll either get more crime (nothing else to do) or poor people (no work, no money). Would this enlarge the gap between the poor and the rich?
Then how do you define money? How do you get money? Will the govt. give you a check every month? How will land (and personal property) be distributed if you don't earn money? etc etc...
Will socialism/communism come back? As much as I like the fact that we should let robots do the "dirty work", I think there will be a huge problem around this idea....
You'll see how much sweat you have to give to get rid of only 150 calories (the equivalent of 1 pop).
Get rid of just 1 pop per day and you have 750 calories less in your body with no efforts whatsoever...
What I do is to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Going up 1 or 2 stories helps. If you're thristy, just go get water on the 2nd level or in the basement. It will make you walk a bit and most importantly, it will help prevent blood clots in your legs...
I see replies about total information crap and such. It clearly states that the devices will only work a couple of miles maximum from the "mother base".
I think this rocks. For the corporate world, I see every employee having one. Ever tried to locate someone when you are in a hurry? They are never at their desk. This could automatically open doors when approaching them, etc.
And when you go home, you switch to your personal tag. Your employer can't see you anyway as you'll probably be more than 1 mile from your workplace.
Cities could have nets where you can hop in and see where your kids/favorite member of your familly are.
I think that if you're not trying to hide anything fron anyone then what do you have to worry about people knowing where you are?
Think of it as some sort of "Physical ICQ". I've been dreaming for something like that for a long time.
Actually, I think both technology could merge together. One to track moving items and would require a more expensive tracking device and one to track cheap items but that are a PITA to replace. The 2nd items could use RFID's to get tracked.
That way, you know if you kid is at school and the school knows if un-checked books (or whatever they want to "Scan") are taken outside a perimeter.
Looking in the DB, they can even pinpoint the exact number of kids who left the perimeter at that time and this would help pinpoint the student. After 2 or 3 alerts, they can easily poinpoint the culprit.
The chances of having a (very computer-wise skilled) paedophile so desperate that he needs to break in a system are slim I guess. Why bother "hacking" in a database when all you need is to cruise down to your local park?
First of all, the way I see the system, the tags will simply emit an "ID" and it's up to you to describe the ID in your software. This is most likely a distributed DB (independent on every sites). So if there's a system at a school and you break in the DB, bravo, you just found out that there ARE kids at the school (duh). And if you break in a private/backyard place and find out there are kids there too, well what next? Why not just park your car and wait. No break in, much easier.
Bought an Averatec 3120 at Bestbuy and wanted a dual boot Linux/XP.
The "recovery CD" (more like destruction CD) came with a pre-installed XP and it would re-format the drive automatically. I could see the ghost image but I couldn't use it because it was locked with a password. What I did is booted with the CD and pressed F8 and then loaded in step by step mode but I skipped the last command, which was launching the mambo-hombo mayhem. The script was actually calling an oem ghost using a password.
I wrote down the password and created my partitions with FDISK. Then I used the oem ghost and wrote XP on the 1st partition.
Everything went fine and then I rebooted with RH9 and installed it on the 2nd partition. Everything works fine except for the PCMCIA (btw, is anyone has a fix, let me know - my wireless card doesn't work).
Recovery CD's suck. I wish they would give real CD's like in the windows 98 period.
Yes I admit that if you bought your reader at www.crackdtv.com well you kinda asked for it (kinda like shopping at Thieves r Us..?)
But if you bought it with another intend, then they should not bother you. In fact, they should not even bother you unless they have some proofs or a solid case.
Yes you can buy a gun at walmart. Does it make you a killer? I've used smartcard readers/coders for door entry in the past. It is becoming more and more popular in credit cards.
They are unfortunately using weak arguments to defend their case I believe. Like someone said, this is a blatant case of mass extortion / black mail. Take on the poor folks who cant defend themselve while (I bet) the lawyers get a nice fee of that $3500 (50% from my experience).
Not sure if this is in the same area but I'm fighting to get the actual media. The company claims that the recovery CD *IS* the media but we all know it's not.
Anyone actually received a real media from their dealer, manufacturer or microsoft?
We all know he invented the PDA, among other famous things...
Windows wouldn't be windows if MS would've stayed with IBM and OS/2.
Where is your TV from? Your DVD? Your computer? Your home theater system? etc..
Get an inverter, a regular PC (in a smaller case) and attach everything in the truck.

You can hook a key logger on the ps2 port. Thinkgeek or Compgeek sells them...
I introduced my dad to the web and hotmail. He asked if Hotmail had any games included.
Okkkkkkkayyyyyyyyyy......!
Now, Kazaa, Morpheus, Napster and Bearshare are probably constellations for him...
Back when someone hacked and placed mp3's there?
Shouldn't they sue the admin's dad or something?
When will they start sueing network admins' parents for letting traffic flow with copyrighted material too?
Apply the same principle to drug use. Let's say your sister gets busted, are your parents involved? As far as I know, NO...
:)
Can someone confirm? I've never had an FBI bust in my house yet

Please tell me as I worry. I wouldn't want the RIAA to dig up dead bodies and take them to court. Come on, when will this joke ever end?
There is not enough money on this planet to pay me for a Java or MCSE certification. Yuk... I don't code Java, I don't do Windowz neither...!
Duuuude, 70k? Oooaahh, whatever dude, you're so, just like way under paid dude. Where are your expectations man?
I won't take anything under a totally cool 100k dude.
Chill out man, 70k... geee....
BTW, I learned java *AND* MSCE (whatever) in toootally insane 14 days dude. Top that!

This looks to me like the Apex-style DVD players. Looks like they modified a PC DVD player and added a modified video card and voila!
Why not use your computer? Now if I could find 50' cables, it would be nice...

DWL-650+ But the pcmcia service will simply lock the box. Seems like RH doesn't like the chipset in the 3120

yeah... true... Maybe I should get a coffee at KFC. I wonder if *they* got sued.. hmmm?
I can already see the credit dept being flooded with requests today....
..Does it make me a bulglar automatically?
