    You're nuts.

    There's no OSS equivalents of the latest version of TrueSpace, AutoCAD, PhotoShop, Quark, Flash, etc etc

    Half the mystique of WaReZ and Crackers is getting to be the first group getting a crack out, having copies of EVERYTHING, and having software just to have it.

    Do you think every WaReZ kiddy has all this software installed? Hell, they might not know what half of it is, but they have it.

    Another reason you'd spend $20,000, is because (company policy, outside vendor, customer, contract) says you NEED one.

    Solution:

    Use and old desktop (free) with snort (free) and use it as a firewall.

    Spend the $20,000 on a Sun box, a intel server, a switch, a laptop, and some Linux Books

    It didn't crash the entire time.

    According to the chart, it also didn't detect code red worm, SYN flood, or wu-ftp exploit.

    Was this box even operating correctly?

    They also looked at Snort, but found that all the products generated way too many false alarms.

    Too many false alarms isn't necessarily a bad thing. In intrusion detection you'd rather take the false positives, than the alternative.

    The rate of false fire alarms, and false burgular alarms is VERY high compared to the actual number of real emergencies.

    Kinda like the first time you get X running on that old PC you found at work in the basement.

    Okay...well hitting a wall at 200mph, and then spinning out at 180, 170, 150, 120 (you slow down QUICK) and hitting more walls/cars/flipping isn't fun

    I've got Opera running (ad supported) browsing Slashdot and various other web sites (ad-supported)

    RealPlayer is barking my ear off with ads as I listen to the WRIF (radio station also supported by ads)

    I've got AOL Instant Messenger open, there's an advertisment in my buddy list window.

    KaZaA has an ad at the bottom of it....

    What the hell...what's one more ad going to do?

    I know, what else can corporations do, other than hire baby sitters for all the employees with net access.

    But, in most cases, they are much more trouble than they are worth. Nothing lowers morale like big brother controlling where you go.

    Sometimes the most useful sites are blocked. I remember working at a school district, I got NOTHING but complaints/questions about N2H2, the filtering solution we were using.
