  1. Prof. Bunker's research cited by Pres of Harvard on Harvard Pres Says Females Naturally Bad at Math · · Score: 1

I am familiar with the hypotheses based on scholarly work referred to by the President of Harvard University. That body of work also supports a wide varity of racial and ethnic stereotypes. I believe the lead researcher may have been Professor Bunker who went on to play a leading role in a popular TV show. Fire that repulsive jerk (Pres of H.).

  2. I went bck for my master after 17 years on Advice for Returning to School After Long Break? · · Score: 1

I chose to go as a full time day student. The first semester was hell, I sucked. I passed only on the generosity of the professors. I worked hard. By the end of the first year I was doing fine. Fine means I was getting A's. But after growing up a bit some of the silliness of academia is difficult to bear. Overall, first semester was my only shocker.

  3. They threatened to fire me on Introducing Children to Computers? · · Score: 1

The year 1990, I had just joined a large manpower department. There was a computer on my desk. I didn't know anything about it and said so. The boss told me to learn fast or be fired. The local community college hooked me up with a course on DOS, Batch programing, Word Perfect, Lotus 123, and a data base. I was going to school at night and on wekends. I turned into the department computer wiz kid in about 2 years. Only the real IT folks could do more. By the way, the "computer" on my desk was a terminal to a main frame. The community college courses weren't a direct help but still they were a giant step forward.

Most people who produce what the company needs succeed. Therefore, a state school student who learns his lessons is perfectly capable of succeeding. A good name school does open more doors for interviews but once your hired the rest is up to you and the name of the institution doesn't matter -- all that matters is your performance.

One approach is to give them what they want and fire them when they misbehave. I know it is tough to catch but it is just as time consuming to establish a complex set of rules that only inhibit the honest and never seem to stop the dishonest. Integrity can never be software based. Be careful who you hire.
