Japan is its equal but not my home of origin and the language thing is a bit tough for a non native speaker. Although, I'm working on the language.

The most effective thing they do on the old continent is harangue Microsoft. They're working off the battery in ther UPS and hoping for a graceful shut down. Future generations of Europeans will rue this generation's weak minded approach.

If you are not a high end guy with the science part you're in jeopardy of having your position shipped to a low wage country. Stay focused -- you'll do great.

  11. Neither *nix nor Windaows are religions on What is Mainframe Culture? · · Score: 1

Often the zeal for a platform reaches almost religous intensity. If everybody involved simply keeps their eye on desired capability vice which platform is their favorite it is easier to get along. I think most of us prefer *nix because the level of control is far superior and thus far has been more stable too. Windows is simply less customizable (if that's a word) and thus at times a bit less interesting. Focus on the customer and the capability the customer wants/needs is the cure for the conflict.

  12. It won't work. on Norwegian Minister: No More Proprietary Formats · · Score: 2, Insightful

It won't even come close to working. This is as silly an approach as saying the entire government must use Microsoft. Peopele should be free to choose what is best for them. That very popular spread sheet really is the best on earth. So let's go to a less capable spreadsheet, after all we don't need to look too closely at our data we're a government. When in doubt raise taxes.

There is no trade off between out door play and computer play. Kids will do them both naturally. You'll find that your kid will still roller blade, ride bikes, play pick games. You can't stop it and you won't have to encourage it. The computer is simply essential to modern life. If you provide the computer the kid will play with that too. The TV, a.k.a, the one eyed baby sitter, is the more likely the negative factor in learning and growing. Good luck.

They're faster, hungrier, and more global in their outlook regarding all things business. Europe political and economic infrastructure is very advanced and that is important but the socialist approach to politics and economics will cause Europeans to become ever poorer. Get the best academic education you can (not in administration) and get out. That is the only way to make the governments take note that they are on the wrong track. Take care jamej

Artist that expect to be paid if the sculpture is photographed by those that paid for the sculpture, musicians that think copying is stealing, movie and TV studios and actors that tried to prevent VCRs, DVDs, and now Tivo. None of this bodes well for America -- as the creative engine of global growth. By the way I've submitted this rant for a copyright.
