There are more MATURE ideas in Eternal Darkness then there is Mario. I don't know what world you live in, but platformers are designed simply to entertain without anything vageuly thought prevoking. Mario is just another example of the hundreds of generic platformers that make me go GAG.
At least a game like ED tries to be original. I believe RE IS more mature then Mario because the most mature and advanced idea I can see in Mario is Yoshi reproducing through eggs. Man, talk about deep. o_O
In any case, I am just telling you what is truth. There are several really nice adult orientated games on GCN, but as far as it's primary market, it's people below 18. This idea is accented not only by the large majoirty of games, but by the exterior design itself.
My point was that GCN, at least in NA, is primarily targeted with children. This might change, but PS2 and Xbox are the main contenders for North America, and their targets are people 20-30, which makeup the largest section of gamers.
Actually, my real point in that last point wasn't about thr GCN at all, but people turn it into such because they don't want to admit that the console they own is targeted at kids.
It seems to me that is D3D was simply dropped, and OGL was used for most games, the turnaround time onto a Mac would be a hell of a lot less. All it takes then is a little tweaking, a publisher, and you are ready to go.
Blah, D3D and DX8 may look nice, and all the new nVidia cards may have all that nice hardware stuff built in, but it would just be SO easy with OGL!:)
Actually, only the GCN has a low age. Last study I saw had the large group of console owners percentage wise being 20-30. Saying this, most people that age can afford a $40-$50 fee for a monthly broadband connection, esspecially if they can afford buying new games and the system itself. Only thing the kiddy comment applies to is Nintendo's consoles, which really are targeted at kids. Aside from a few games, that's how it is. For the most part, PS2 and Xbox compete with each other, and GCN has a presecured market for itself. How else do you think N64 survived which such a horrendous price for console and games?
Well, we are not really talking about the average user. 99% of people who actually use their home PCs for gaming purposes know about the things in their computers. Maybe they don't have a clue how it all works, or how to install new stuff, but they know what their computer's specs are ussually. When they are starting to see their games slow down, and the minimum requirements start to catch up to their own system's specs, they buy a new PC.
Buying a $300 console every 4 years is a lot cheaper then getting a new computer ever 4 years. And to make a new computer LAST 4 years, you have to spend a lot more then $300 on it. If you only get a mid-high range system instead of top of the line, you are basically going to have to buy a new PC in 2.5-3 years instead of 4.
My current box is almost 3 years old, and it was a top of the line machine when I picked it up. I haven't spent any money upgrading it, but I know that within a year, I will need a new box.
Let's face facts. Even top of the line video cards cost more then a console...
EULAs have already been shown to be not really that binding. For example, a EULA cannot forbid you from doing something. It can't say "You can't use this piece of software as a frisbee" because it has no legal clout.
It hardly matters much anyways. Spy ware is not *incredibly difficult* to get rid of, and I am fairly certain if this was taken to court, it wouldn't go in favour of the Spyware.
Pssst... There are things that are legally binding that scam artists use called contracts that are reversed because people are getting scammed (READ: Taken advantage of, sort of like this situation).
Now all we have to do is wait for someone with money to sue. Until then, deal:)
Cash doesn't mean anything. Sony and Microsoft both have a lot of shareholders to appease. If Microsoft starts digging into it's capital funds, then it will start to raise questions and make shareholders uneasy. A lot of Microsoft's money comes from it's stock, and so a lot of what decides what it does comes from how it will affect the stock price.
I too dislike the whole x86 thing. It was originally designed for running static applications like spreadsheets, not dynamic apps like fully 3d games. x86 needs a big ass GPU to even make it remotely feasible to be a good 3d platform, and even then it does a piss poor job of it.
No, I prefer the multi-processor, abstract route that Sony took. The machine has lots of power yet, so we will see how far developers can take it.
science fiction
n.
A literary or cinematic genre in which fantasy, typically based on speculative scientific discoveries or developments, environmental changes, space travel, or life on other planets, forms part of the plot or background.
Lexx is not based on speculative science, or any science, but it covers the rest. Really, scince fiction can fall under several catagories. Farscape is Sci-fi, just as much as Lexx is. I would definitely say someone associtates the level of science that is discussed in Farscape with science-fiction more then with Lexx, but they are both science ficiton simply for what they entail, which is space travel. Lexx leans on the fantasy side, but is not comparable to real fantasy shows like Smallville. I don't really know if Frankenstien is the first science fiction novel, or if it was even classified as such, but it involves science with fantasy (the abstract and obviously impossible machine which brings his monster to life). Although there is no basis in real science, it is still science fiction, and not fantasy.
Lexx's abstract science (the limited amount) does denote it's entrance into the science fiction catagory.
Have no fear. It has been renewed for a 4th and 5th season! Although I don't know how many of the current cast of characters will be there next season. The cast seems to changes like the seasons, excluding Ben Browder and Claudia Black of course.
In order for him to get the buttons and LCD screen hooked up correctly, I think he needed to use the guts of the PC to get them running. He after all had to have adapters for those giant buttons lol.
And we all know Dreamcast was hugely popular in Japan.
" Japan has sunk into its worst recession in decades "
Yes, well, the ewntire 90s has been a recession for them, and the sales are still strong in the console market there. Saying worst recession in decades is crap anyways, because since the 60s-late 80s they were experiencing a huge boom almost constantly (seriously).
Xbox will most likely bomb in Europe anyways. All my european friends have shown little interest in a console that costs 100 euros more then the PS2 currently out, and one that will be about twice as much as the gamecube. Of course, we will see how it does when sales figures come out...
The problem is that Mac users get the same games I am playing from the day they come out on my PC months later if at all. You talk about it having all you need, and limited software that is good, yet 90% of that software is ported PC stuff. A lot of the Mac games played nowadays are in the dollar bin for PC games.
Only time this ever changes is when you take an OpenGl game to Mac platform. But that makes a crappy graphical game, since Macs and OpenGL are not very friendly to each other.
Well, actually, they were working on the SNES CD addon, but when that was canceled, Sony just took that team and those resources and designed the PS1. It's not actually based on any of the hardware developed for the SNES CD project.
BA HAHAHAHA! SC is definitely not the best RTS made. I can think of several that are better IMO.
-TA
-RA
-RA2
-SS
-even WW3!!
The only thing that I play SC for nowadays is the map setting maps. Diplomacy=best ever. The map editor has a lot of power, and that is the only thing that makes SC pretty darn good.
Oh yeah, and did I mention that playing a multiplayer game on SC past 6pm EST is impossible because every single Korean player in the world feels US West is the ONLY server they can use. Damn Blizzard. They own Korea! heh
A lot of you guys are complaining about RTS with few tactics.
What about Sudden Strike? http://www.suddenstrike.com
It's a realistic WW2 RTS. The editor is pretty powerful, and when you play the game online it is some of the most mind grueling and tactic filled games ever.
You choose one of three nations: USSR, GB/US, or Germany. Each has their own strengths, and each are very different. Some people only use one nation because they are so familar with them.
In multiplayer, you start with your team members on on side, with the other team on the other side (or if there is three teams, or four(max) it just gets more crazy). With the units you start with, which are defined by the map maker, you scramble to get to the flags on the map. Each flag, or group of flags (2+) will give you extra units after you hold them for 1 minute. There is ussually a delay of 1-5 minutes for each set of reinforcements after capture.
Think about this: once people settle on lines of defense, you can have huge walls of AT guns, artillery, infantry, tanks. Pretty much everything except naval battles are in this game. Since you don't build your units, you treat them as resources. No, this isn't ground control. Since the way to get more units is to capture flags, you have to work with your team to exploit weak points in enemy defenses. I have wasted hundreds of infantry in a single assault just to break through their line, only to have their counter attack stagger my defenders and force me to pull back.
Some maps even have bombers, spy planes, and paratroopers to go behind enemy lines. A lot of the strategy is not just killing the enemy, but using each of your units and the ground you have. I know I have started to become pretty good at taking out enemy artillery groups. Believe me, nothing is quite as satisfactory as using your 3 cannons to take out 5 of their that were harrasing and destroying your AT guns along the line of defense.
The scale of the game is epic, with dozens of tanks, and thousands of infantry on screen not being uncommon in the larger maps. I remember one particular game on a river map where we sent in like 20 bombers in a joint air strike to clear out a rail way station just across the river. We were having trouble securing bridges, so after we cleared it out (losing half our planes in the process) we just sent in another 20-25 paratrooper planes and landed, securing that area, and mocing steadily south until we overwhelmed their defenders on one bridge.
Seeing more then 800 infantry moving along with tank support, it really is some of the best strategy playing I have seen. Real world tactics apply. I mean, take for instance tanks. You can't expect them to beat all this infantry down. I have had 4 AT guns with 40 infantry in a very good defensive location (ridge) hold off a group of 10 or so tanks, plus about 250 infantry.
The graphics are similar to those on RA, and although the infantry looks pretty pathetic, when you consider that there are hundreds, thousands even, on screen at a time, it's not hard to see why.
If you want to pick it up, there are some on sale used and new in most game stores. They don't make it anymore, and it's primarily a European game, so there are some less then legal ways to get it. Some people are forced to use those since they can't find it anywhere in a local store. If you still can't find it, SS2 is coming out within 6 months.
I suggest you at least check out the link. If you like strategy, this game is the best I have played.
The difference is that these MMORPGs are exactly that, massive. When you have hundreds of thousands of players all playing once game, they all want to find a way to cheat. People with money say "I don't want to spend time leveling! Who cares if it's an inheirent part of the game's learning curve! Who cares if I won't know what I am doing!"
It's akin to another popular game, Counter Strike. I remember playing it, but when you get hit from across the map from some lamer newbie who felt like arming himself with a wallhack and an aimbot, well, it can piss you off.
Frankly, this is no different. People are basically taking the easy road to victory, cheating. It's a similar situation; you who are putting the time in to level up and get a good character legitamitely are basically being outdone by some newb who will just use that oh so nice lvl 50 character for 2 weeks before he becomes bored (and possibly sells it off to yet another newbie)
That is BS. Gamecube did NOT sell 615,000. On their own site they said "shipped". I have a feeling that these numbers are not based on console sales but on the amount of hardware shipped to stores.
Dunno about you, but x86 architechture isn't exactly shining performance.
The hardware is better? I don't know about you, but the stuff on Mac is starting to destroy things on PC. RISC BABY!
I did, but I wasn't simply replying to your post.
At least a game like ED tries to be original. I believe RE IS more mature then Mario because the most mature and advanced idea I can see in Mario is Yoshi reproducing through eggs. Man, talk about deep. o_O

Apparently you haven't see the summon EDEN from FFXIII. It was very long, and it sucked ass :) But it was mondocool to use to crush the little guys! :)
