  6. Depends on what the thief wants to steal on Designing a More User-Friendly DRM · · Score: 1

" Any real determined thief won't mess with the locks when the car's covered in breakable glass ;)"

It really depends on what the thief wants to steal. If he wants your stereo, he'll happily smash a window to take it. If he wants your car, he won't smash a window. Replacing a smashed window will cost you $100-$200. A brand new stolen car will sell for $500-$1000 to a chopshop (yes, a $50,000 vehicle will only fetch $1000). It's too expensive to break a window.

It all comes down to the value of the item being protected. If the cost of the item isn't that much more than the cost of stealing it, then people won't bother. If stealing it damages the item too much (broken windows or crappy quality VCDs) people won't bother. DRM companies need to figure that out.

  10. 4 more years and disney is screwed. on Disney Blames Apple For Music Piracy · · Score: 2, Interesting

All disney has to do is expand the Copyright term by 4 more years and we can pounce on them!

Jacob Grimm died in 1863. Disney's Snow White and the 7 dwarves came out in 1937. That's 74 years later.

All Disney needs to do is expand the copyright term by 4 more years and we can point out that if this copyright term had been in effect when Disney started out, they wouldn't have been able to make the world's first full length animated feature film.

I always find it ironic that Disney makes such a big deal about copyright, yet they made their living off other people's past-copyrighted work. Snow White, Three Little Pigs, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty.

Disney owes their livelihood to public domain works.. particularly The Grimm Brothers' intellectual property.

Peer review doesn't guarrantee security.. but lack of peer review guarrantee's a lack of security.

Open source has the potential to be secure because it has peer review. (Again, there's no guarrantee that anyone will look at the code, or if they do, find any or all security flaws that exist in the code).

Closed source cannot possiblity be secure because it lacks peer review.

    That's how it boils down.

I think that's the most you'll ever see in terms of liability. "If this software doesn't do what it's supposed to, can I return it and get a full refund?"

You think that the makers of space heaters are getting sued? After all, place a space heater near some curtains and you'll burn down your house.

Of course not.. they slap a warning sticker on the box and they've covered their ass. Slap a warning sticker on software... "This software is presented AS-IS", and you're fine (yes, even Microsoft)

But money-back guarrantees if the software fails to perform as advertised could be a more common occurrance (even if the company doesn't provide a money back guarrantee, you may be entitled to one in the future).
