True, Perl doesn't have to be messy. It's all a matter of coding style. If you are a considerate developer, you will write clean, easy to read code that's replete with useful comments.
Unfortunately, there are people who want to write messy code out there, and I'll be damned if I have to maintain it!
Thanks for the point - clarity of code is a matter of style, but certainly the choice of language helps as well.

  6. Use PHP - faster, easier, more efficient on mod_perl Developer's Cookbook · · Score: 1

Not to knock Perl, but have you ever tried to maintain someone else's CGI scripts? Perl has a serious design flaw in my opinion - it's easy to write code that is almost unreadable to anyone else but the author.

As a System Administrator, I see this as being detrimental to the work environment - so you have a Perl guru who can do it all - what happens when they leave? Who will you replace them with? How long will the new people need to familiarize themselves with obfuscated code?

Consider a solution like Python or PHP. PHP quite simply is the shit when it comes to web programming - you can quickly put together a complex web application using its straightforward and simple syntax, which is easy to read, understand and modify. (Of course you all know this...)

Python is even better in this regard.

In a production environment, it makes sense to use tools that are conducive to efficiency.

I worked for about a year as a System Administrator in a small web design and software firm in lower Manhattan (half of our company was canned in the wake of the attack on the WTC).

About halfway through my term of employment with the firm, a disgruntled coworker of mine attempted to organize an meeting between the management and the employees, as well as a few former clients that they had dealt with (!) This person took it upon themselves to send out a mass email to everyone.

Needless to say, less than 15 minutes went by before the guy was fired and sent home, so kids next time you think about airing your beef on the wire, think twice if you value your employment.

  9. telecoms a dying breed? on FCC to Freeze Out ISPs? Public Comments Due Today · · Score: 0

The emergence of broadband technology is slowly signalling the death of the telecommunications industry as it has been traditionally known. Long distance phone calls can be easily made over the internet now for a fraction of what the telecoms charge. As the internet spreads its tentacles to all corners of the globe, the traditional hardwired phone will inevitably die. Telecoms realize this now, this is why they are scrambling to enter the ISP sphere as internet access and broadband becomes the dominant commodity. Of course, this means bad stuff for us all, and should be opposed. Support your local ISP!

Doesn't any of this frighten anyone? I place this machine only a few steps below the Cow raping machine, which keeps the sows pregnant and lactating. Sadly, I cannot express much enthusiasm over such a machine. I am not a vegetarian but I do not drink milk or eat dairy products, and I feel that it has had a positive effect upon my digestive system. Thus I may feel morally superior in realizing that my habits do not contribute to the manufacture of such devices.

I concede I was wrong about the timing of the films, but nonetheless my arguement still holds some weight - the films certainly were edited before their final release in the wake of the attacks on America. It's common knowledge that the government has met with Hollywood studios in the interests of promoting films which favorably depict the United States.

I apologize for flaming Jon Katz. It was quite uncivilized of me. Having seen the WTC explode and having lost my job (I was four blocks away) has gotten me a bit excited as of late as I'm sure you can understand.

In my response I didn't even mention the topic of his original posting, a review of the show CSI which I've only seen once but found rather corny. I've read his other reviews and have been shocked and even offended. But, I apologize for my tone which was innappropriate in this forum.

  13. Who does Jon Katz work for? on The Rise of CSI · · Score: 1, Troll

Who is Jon Katz, and why does he have such infantile taste in film and TV? It seems that everytime there is pro-US propaganda thinly disguised as "entertainment" he is there, attempting to convince us that it is not utter and complete drivel, which is apparent to anyone with a brain and half an education. Example: Jon Katz's ridiculous review of "Blackhawk Down" and "Behind Enemy Lines" which were both US government propaganda films designed to promote patriotism in the wake of September 11th. Jon Katz consistently picks the worst propaganda films and TV shows. Either he really likes this second-rate military propaganda and is completely moronic, or it's his job to spew this crap on slashdot, which traditionally has been very critical of the US government and its policies. Next he'll be trying to convince us that "The Agency" is a good show, and that the CIA is a bunch of brave heroes keeping the world safe from terrorism when the historical record actually shows that they've been one of the largest supporters of state sponsored terrorism in the world in places such Indonesia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Chile, Argentina, and Angola, to name a few. So Mr. Katz, please spare me your pathetic reviews. This American can think for himself.
