  1. Re:He is just a pessimist on Is Science Fiction the Opiate of the Geek Masses? · · Score: 1

Science Fiction vs Fantasy in the Future is a weird discussion. I offered a sort of solid differentiation earlier that was generally accepted. More recently I heard something interesting from a professor. The jist of it is anything that is "good scifi" operates on not being scifi at all: the only premise is that some aspect or aspects of the universe are different from ours. Before slapping yourself and me, by that I mean very specifically. For example, maybe in one universe carbon doesn't form bonds as well. There. You have an entire multibillion dollar franchise based on a single premise (or at minimum a good book). This is what he called scifi. I just found this to be an interesting take on it.

It's kind of fun to come up with these. Some more!

    Earth has no axle tilt.

Solar radiation is directional in nature.

    A thick ether exists.

Space is significantly folded on itself.

Of course if your premise happens to turn out to be true, horrah! If not, well that wasn't the point. Now of course the point is to select a premise then write a story which exploits it without relying on it. Good luck.

I never plan on buying another console. Why buy a console for $400 when a new graphics card costs $100 (by new, I mean able to play new games). The other intensive things I do assure that I have enough RAM and to the least extent CPU power.

I simply don't see a reason to own a console until I have no choice (bundling it with home media system).

If there exists Product X with an issue, and all of its competitors have the same issue, you can't just declare it moot. MSIE has memory leaks, sucks to be them. Firefox has memory leaks, sucks to be them. How about Lynx and Opera? Do they both have memory leaks just as significant? If they don't, I hardly think they'd appreciate you deciding that it doesn't matter since both IE and Firefox have them.

In conclusion, IE has memory leaks. Nya nya.

In a country where everyone doesn't have health care, unions are perfectly understandable IMHO. Dental is even worse. Sure, Americans get paid a good deal because the cars, real estate and generally all markets have vastly inflated prices, but none of that matters if you're sick and can't get care.

Well the idea is similar to say, SNES game emulation. No matter how high you make the resolution, the pixels will still be same size once scaled. If, on the other hand, you are letting the LCD run outside of its native resolution, you get a blending affect similar to the inherent fuzziness in poor quality CRTs (televisions)

All I am really saying is it's not all bad.

Erm, outside the sweet spot for graphics is perfectly fine, if not better due to the natural blur, I find. However it's no good for text. For example a 1600x1200 native LCD will probably look better displaying a movie in, say 1024x768 full screen for a low quality recording (such as your typical 700mB-1.4gB recordings).
