But what is the correct way to pronounce Solaris (as in Sun's OS)? I always said the 'a' like 'hair'...but on the previews for this they said it like 'car.' Just me wondering if I've been pronouncing Solaris wrong all this time.:)
And what's to say that the digest in that file wasn't the digest of a trojaned version (it wasn't....but it could have). Then you'd be just as fucked. No security model is perfect, not even your beloved Gentoo's.
Wonderfully said, you have just concisely and elegantly summed up what I have struggled so much to convey to so many like the parent poster. Thank you.
Alright, I have a serious question for you. Why the fuck would you want to "stick it to them"? AOL provides a FREE service to you - one that works extremely well, and you want to stick it to them??? This is why my faith in the human race is dwindling my friends...
AIM is an amazing system - I use it daily. Without AIM I wouldn't be able to have cyber se..err..meet so many new and interesting people. They provide the serivce free - they even have a goddamn Linux client, and you want to "stick it to them".
The result is a Number, which is the width of window {nr}. When {nr} is zero, the width of the current window is returned. When window {nr} doesn't exist, -1 is returned. An existing window always has a width of zero or more.
So, something to the effect of "nmap l exec winwidth(0)l" should work (syntax may be a bit wrong, see ":h winwidth", ":h map", and ":h exec" for the details).
There's also a winheight() function that does the same for the window height.
I don't know about WINE - but Lopsterwill support WPNP (WinMX Peer Networking Protocol) in its next release - you can CVS it at the moment and it works great.
It isn't dangerous at all. I'm 16 - I started chatting on Yahoo! at 14 - and I'm still alive. Why? Because I'm smart and my parents thought enough to not only tell me I shouldn't trust to strangers - but also why I shouldn't trust strangers.
Seriously - chat is an extremely positive thing. I've learned more in Yahoo! Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris:1 than anywhere. Had it not been for that room and the people in it I would have never even heard of Linux or *BSD or anything non-Windows. How about that? And I haven't been raped or molested or whatever. Chat is not dangerous - if the children on it have enough common sense and intelligence to know how to protect themselves (this is where parenting comes into play - a thing that is all too often absent).
...that some of you may have thought of as well. I propose we stop caring about Microsoft and it's bullshit and instead work to make Linux (as a whole) better. Seriously. I've heard this before, and I've also heard people rally behind it - and yet I still see no action.
Instead of posting stories about Microsoft and its gayness, why don't we post stories about ~gasp~ Linux! I say we all ignore this thread and all others that may come our way that focus on Microsoft. Let us focus on the "Linux Community" - that will destroy Microsoft's monopoly far more efficiently than the judicial system ever dreamed of.
I'm sorry, but fuck you. There is no "its" - and anyone who argues otherwise is stupid. In the English language an apostrophe is used to denote ownership - possession. It is also used in contractions. So the progressive form or "it" would be it's and the contraction of "it is" or "it has" would be it's. I only use "it's" - and that's what you should do.
I love how capitalists and authoritarians alike fall back on the notion that inequality and suffering are "facts of life" and so capitalism and authority is just - and yet they fail to go by that same reasoning when it comes to murder, theft, and overall crime. You can't have it both ways. Either the world revolves around pain and brutality or it doesn't. Whether or not that brutality puts money into your goddamn fucking greedy ass pockets is completely irrelevant.
Why don't you put aside your greed for one moment and think about the possibility, just the possibility, that the world doesn't have to be so fucked up.
Yeah, my cable (TV) company was bought out by Adelphia. Now, my family never paid for HBO, Cinemax, etc. - too expensive, my parents wouldn't pay for it - but now we can't get it unless we get digital cable. That just pisses me the fuck off. I mean seriously, they are forcing me to get a bullshit service that I never wanted and never will want - and worse yet, how many "alternative" cable companies do you see? *looks around* That's right. None.
And oh yeah, they promised me my Tech TV so I could laugh at the assholes on The Screensavers. And they still haven't given it to me.
Kinda offtopic, but I'm wondering if anyone has any links to some nice games for Linux. I've been playing LBreakout2 non-stop, but other than that (and of course Q2), I've yet to find any nice games that I like.
This isn't a troll or anything, I'm genuinely wondering if anyone has suggestions.
Not to be an ass or anything, but open source relies on this silly little catch in order to function properly. That would be the word "open." It isn't the developer's fault that they can't read a closed format. If Adobe released the full specs for PDF then open source developers would have absolutely no problem providing a solution. But you see, since it is closed then you're kinda tied into using their (Adobe's) solution.
Besides, give it time and there will be an open solution, it just takes time to break down the barriers that stand in the way of a free solution.
I apologize for veering offtopic, but this sort of patriotic pro-military intervention propaganda gets the best of me.
Now, just one example? Noam Chomsky describes one such example of "conquering and invading" quite well:
"It should be unnecessary to point out that massive terrorism is a standard device of powerful states.... Some cases are not even controversial. Take the US war against Nicaragua, leaving tens of thousands dead and the country in ruins. Nicaragua appealed to the world court, which condemned the US for international terrorism ("the unlawful
use of force"), ordering it to desist and pay substantial reparations. The US responded to the court ruling by sharply escalating the war, and vetoing a security council resolution calling on all states to observe international law. The escalation included official orders to attack "soft targets" -- undefended civilian targets, like agricultural collectives and health clinics -- and to avoid the Nicaraguan army. The terrorists were able to carry out these instructions, thanks to the complete control of Nicaraguan air space by the US and the advanced communications equipment provided to them by their supervisors."
While I do agree that war is sometimes necessary, like in revolution and related things, imperialism (which is exactly what the US and it's allies have been doing for as long as they've been recognizable military powers) is in no way justifiable. Sure, sometimes it may "help," but this "help" usually just leaves the country more dependent on outside forces, and many times just places it under control of some other more "friendly" country. And there are more than enough examples of harmful United States militarism to overshadow it's "good" military activities.
Anyways, offtopic, but I just had to get my word in.

Wrong. The editors of/. DO have special powers. they can (and do) delete comments, harshly moderate comments (remember Signal 11?), and so on. Jamie has actually confirmed this fact - the editors own or work on the site. It is theirs. Not to say that they will abuse this power, even if it has occured before, but you cannot say that they are normal users. They are not.
This kind of shit really pisses me off. This'll most definitely come off as a flame, but I cannot stand FUD like this anymore.
Show me a soccor mom that can pick up Linux+StarOffice and use it.
Bullshit. Linux-Mandrake
is amazingly easy to use, it comes with StarOffice (at least 7.2 did) so there is no huge download for the 56k-ers. StarOffice is very simple and superior, IMHO, to Microsoft Office in many many ways.
Show me an average person that can learn how to open up attachments with one of your "safe" email programs.
Just about anyone. Sylpheed is very easy to use, it's simple and its stable (despite it's pre-1.0 version). It's very user friendly.
I don't particularly like the FUD you are spreading, as it harms the user friendliness of Linux more than the actual lack (or not) thereof could have. Please, quit spreading lies and actually look into the fact that many easy, user friendly programs and desktop environments exist for Linux.
Well, I loved the first three seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but after that he and the other writers just seemed to run out of ideas - it got really repetetive and just lost its charm.
One of the biggest things that drew me to Buffy as opposed to other "sci-fi" shows was the real life appeal it had, it tended with issues I (as a teenager) faced while mixing in the mystery of the occult.
It sounds to me like he'll follow the same lead in this series and I'm gonna definitely check it out.

Try typing ":h map" while in Vim.
.vimrc should do the trick (I may be missing something, but the details are in the help file).
In short, adding "nmap l 78l" to your

Simply put: Yes.

~grumbly face~ I hate Adelphia.

Well, considering that the paper discussed the use of open source in government, you'd imagine they would use an open document format.
That's all he was saying, it just defeats the whole paper's purpose, ya know?
