  1. Get High School Radio/TV/Drama clubs Involved on Internet-Created Free Audio Dramas? · · Score: 1

I bet a good place to find enthusiastic (but untrained and probably a little too full of themselves) voice talent and access to decent recording equipment is to propose this to the Radio (and maybe also TV) production classes that many larger high schools (or even colleges for that matter) offer. Maybe get the drama club involved WITH the broadcasting teachers.

THEN show them how they can use the internet as another way to distribute their final result.

I can think of a lot worse ways for a bunch of kids to waste their time.

From looking at the map of locations, it occurs to me that these might be great places to set up new, upstart and possibly, just possibly good FM radio stations...

  3. What about the "waka" protocol by Roy Fielding? on HTTP's Days Numbered · · Score: 2, Interesting

I did a little searching based on the phrase "replace HTTP" and found the link

    http://apachecon.com/2001/EU/html/speakers.html

Which points to decsriptions of workshops and seminars being discussed at Apachecon, the parts relevant to this discussion being:

    Roy Fielding
Sessions: waka: a replacement for HTTP

Roy T. Fielding is chairman of the Apache Software Foundation and chief scientist at eBuilt, Inc.
He is a founder of several open-source software projects (including Apache httpd), architect of the current Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP/1.1), and co-author of the Internet standards for HTTP and Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI). He received his Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine.

There is a popup link that says:

The waka protocol is designed to be a replacement for HTTP as the primary application-level protocol for the transfer of hypermedia information over the Web. It is based on the same architectural principles as HTTP/1.1, but without the baggage of preexisting syntax restrictions. Waka has a tokenized, self-descriptive syntax for communicating multiple asynchronous data streams over a single transport connection. This talk provides an introduction to the waka protocol and insights to its eventual impact on the Web Architecture.

Sounds impressive to me, does anyone else know more?

  4. Concentration of power without good safeguards on The Vulnerability of Our Tech-Dependent World · · Score: 3, Insightful

You can't guard against EVERYTHING but we certainly need to do a better job of guarding against the most likely things to go wrong and/or responding to them when they do.

Sometimes that means being willing to pay alot more for more backup systems and/or better trained personnel to prevent bad situation "x" from happening in the first place, sometimes that means being willing to tie up a lot of resources just waitng to respond in case bad situation "x" ever happens. And sometimes it means taking a step back and asking why some system is set up the way it is in the first place and saying it is better to change the basic way that we depend on system such and such.

One thought that struck me as I was reading the article was that guarding against stupidity is -almost- the same as guarding against terrorism but that it is not given nearly as much priority. I mean, think of how much power was concentrated in the hands of the poorly screened and basically unmonitored captain of the Exxon Valdes and how having a few simple safeguard procedures in place would have saved a huge chunk of America from devistation. I mean, its one thing to worry about what are the most likely coordinated attacks on our infrastructure andtry to prevent them, that IS a very good thing to do, but lets not lose sight of the fact that we need to spend at least as much time thinking about how to prevent really stupid things from happening too.

An update to my earlier comment: Latest email from Comcast to me today has changed the forwarding to go until Feb 28, 2002 which is a much more reasonable amount of time. And so far the connection rate has not slowed down. Maybe it will be a good new year for my internet access after all...

  7. Only 3 days of forwarding of email on AT&T Broadband To Merge With Comcast Cable · · Score: 1

Comcast is making a really bad first impression on Mediaone users in the Metro-Detroit area: They are only forwarding email from Mediaone accounts for three days to the forced new Comcast accounts. After that, nothing. All the contacts you've made, all the subscriptions to newsletters, all the customers or potential employers looking at your just a week old resumes or business cards or brochures will simply have to wonder where the heck you went. More details in the local Newspaper at Detroit Freepress Hope my access speed doesn't drop too much...
