Obviously those people were inexperienced with Ruby and or Rails. You can add new methods, or override the methods in any class you want. It's very easy to change they way any object behaves. And the concept of code blocks is extremely powerful and flexible (yes, yes, not an original idea - borrowed from Small Talk)...

When you get right down to it, all people really want to know is "what is the performance of this chip" and maybe "how much power it consumes". I think Intel and AMD should both just drop all these silly and confusing names and using some kind of standard naming convention using SpecInt and SpecFp, and some notation for power consumption. Say maybe, for example (si06 for specint2006, sfp06 for specfp2006, w for watts) "Intel si06_nn, sfp06_nn @ 25w". Then picking a cpu would just be a matter of a simple comparison price/performace/watts. Easy on us, and maybe saves them some money by not having pay for people to come up with cool sounding names.

I love Apple, but I think their customer service (personally speaking) sucks. They have this "What problem? We've never heard of that before - it must be you that you have abused/misused our product" attitude even when their are blogs on the internet with thousands of people complaining about that (or any given) problem. I had to write a registered receipt to Steve Job's before I got any kind of service from them. I do have to give them credit though. The next generation had a solid hinge going across the whole laptop instead of two small ones on each end... Anyway, I agree. Many laptop manufacturers for some reason just really don't like to repair broken hinges.

I've installed Ubuntu on a half a dozen very different machines - both old and new - and hardware detection has always been flawless. No problems with wireless either - not even the Broadcom chips. I either grab the firmware from Windows for the bcm43xx kernel driver, or use NDiswrapper (which I find gets me a better signal). I just installed Linux on a friends older Dell laptop, and lo and behold, not only was Fusion already running (flawlessly on an 8MB i810 - see Vista try that), I also got a popup telling me that the batteries life (not its charge) was low and needed replacing. I've never seen Windows do that. I also automatically detected when I plugged in an HP printer and just set it up for me instantly. To get this printer working under Windows I had to go and download 100MB driver "package" that installed all kinds of junk and took half an hour to install. When was the last time you actually tried to install a decent Linux distro? When Windows 95 was actually current?

Why do they need to "invent" a separate system at all. Most modern phones have GPS built in, which can be used to determine velocity. I would say anyone traveling over 25 MPH is probably in some sort of vehicle. The GPS could also be used to determine if the location was on a "road". Admittedly this still faces the problem of determining whether the person talking was a driver or a passenger.

The dell might come with monitor but how much does a 17" lcd cost these days anyway - not THAT much. And Macbooks start $1,099 and they are very nice. I don't think the whole "Macs are so much more expensive than PC's" applies at ALL anymore.

Internet Explorer IN Windows and Safari WITH Mac OS X are not comparable at all. Microsoft made Internet Explorer "an integral part of the operating system ... that you can't remove" (so they said in court). It was the only browser they offered, and they forced it on people. Apple provides Safari with Mac OS X, which uses KTHML, an open source renderning engine - which you can quite easily and safely delete. Not to mention that Apple distributed Internet Explorer on the Mac before developing Safari. The two approaches were entirely different. Whats the harm you ask? Just look at where we are with nternet Explorer today. I think consumers are obviously worse off because of Microsoft's approach.
