BG is right, to a point... almost.

Good design will minimize the liability from imperfect code, but unfortunately, MS hasn't gotten to the point of admitting their design is the problem yet. When they do, this interview will mean something.

  9. Judgement Day on On Videogaming TV Shows And Vitriol · · Score: 1

Judgement Day is pretty good. If a game sucks, they tell you, man, WITH BELLS ON. No shame here, nosirree. Icons is cool, especially when they do old-school stuff like the history of Activision. Cheat would be more fun if I had some of the games they cover, and Filter's fun, even if the number one choice is always wrong. Mostly, G4 impresses me with its even-handedness. This is a network that has every reason to just be fanboy infomercials 24/7 and it isn't. If they neglect anything, it's PC gaming, and even then, they're just spending more time on the markets that pay.

Now, having said that, TechTV has really gone into the toilet over the last year. XPlay is still watchable, but Microsoft is running infomercials in the middle of prime-time, Unscrewed is a vulgar disaster, and don't even bring up that abominable sex technology show whose name I cannot remember. Generally they just seem to be angling toward purient and vulgar lately, which is NOT good tech.

Where the hell are the shows explaining SMTP mail server maintenance? Where is the infrastructure lecture series about firewalls, routing and network design? Where is the "Slashdot TV Open Source Report" daily newscast about what's going on in open source software? So much opportunity squandered by so little effort.

  12. Not Windows, but Linux... on Syncing Options for Computer Lab Machines? · · Score: 1

Have you looked at Partition Image? The NTFS support is still 'experimental', but it can load images over a network from a server. I don't know if it can boot them or not, but it's open-source, so I'm sure you can get some kind of help from the developers toward adding that sort of capability yourself. Then, you'd just need to make a set of bootable CDs that run the partimage client and automatically rewrite the hard drive with the correct image. Shoot -- if you put 2GB of RAM in them, would it be possible to go diskless and load everything onto a RAM Drive? That way, the PC rewipes itself every reboot and you might even get a kick in performance if the disk accesses don't clog the memory bus too badly.

Now, this probably doesn't help because you are looking for a Windows setup, but if you needed Linux, what about rolling your own customized version of Knoppix?

IIRC, the latest versions support network booting from hosted images, and several others have taken Knoppix and tweaked it with various different hardware support and software changes (Overclockix, for example, adds stuff like support for NVidia's NForce2 chipset using NVidia's Linux drivers, which Knoppix won't include because of the licensing terms.)

...though, on second thought. I suppose if you were willing to go through all that trouble, you might just be willing to host the /usr tree read-only from your server -- that would do about the same thing.

  15. Is this even relevant? on HP Launches New Calculators · · Score: 1

As the proud owner of an HP28S from my undergrad days, I have to say that if I were going into school now, I'd just get a basic Palm for $80 and be done with it. Not only is it a standard platform with many games, utilites and useful apps, but several nifty programmable RPN graphing and solving calculator programs are available for free. You can probably even get an HP28 or HP15 emulator for it.

About the only advantage I still see with the HP Calc is the keyboard. That, and I'm certain the palm would be banned from exams because of the potential for cheating, but so would the HP, no? I mean, 2MB will store a ton of cheat sheets! I packed a boatload of notes into the 32K of my 28S back in '89!

  16. Re:to allow recordings, you just have to on Broadcast Flag All But Approved · · Score: 1

OK, you're right that the copy-bit system relies on the TV itself honoring the copy-bit policy, but doesn't this rule force hardware manufacturers to comply by adding support? If you buy a non-compliant TV or modify your TV to circumvent such copy protection, my guess is that you will end up in court procecuted under the circumvention sections of the DMCA. My guess is *that's* the real goal here, not securing the signal, but fulfilling a legal requirement of the DMCA by establishing a copy protection device in law under FCC rules.

Ugh! It's like I need a live-in attorney at home to advise me when opening mail, surfing the net, answering the phone and watching TV!
