As a Novell employee I disagree on all of your arguments but one - the kde versus gnome - I wish we could pick one but that ain't happening.

Yast and Redcarpet: Integrating redcarpet into yast was the right way to go. Since redcarpet (from Ximian) and Yast (from Suse) were able to collaborate and come out with a better solution shows that they have vision and execute the vision.

AppArmor vs SeLinux: see security wars Summary: Novell buys a best of breed security solution, then gives it to the community. RedHat wines: "In my opinion, Novell wants to split the market...".

Xgl vs Xegl: I don't see any confusion here, I think maybe you mean aiglx Xegl is a completely new Xserver. So to compare the three projects: Xegl = really hard, Xgl = hard, aiglx = easy.
I think the confusion around this comes from redHat. Novell chose Xgl, RedHat chose aiglx, Novell gets the credit, Redhat complains. Xegl is still a ways off.

Novell is putting significant investment into open source software (OpenOffice, Hula, Evolution, Xgl, AppArmor, Yast, iFolder, Gnome, KDE, SAMBA, and the kernel itself, and I'm sure other projects I'm not aware of) Despite the complaining from RedHat they deserve some respect.

With all that, it will it takes time to build momentum. Without a doubt the momentum for Linux from Novell is building, investors are simply upset that Novell is not there yet. The fact that Novell is number one in China is a signficant accomplishment that will result in revenue in the future.

Novell and Red Hat are also founding members of Open Invension Network. I'm not sure about Red Hat but I know that Novell has a slew of valuable patents that would help prevent lawsuits. This is really neat. As more companies become members of the network, the stronger open source will be - legally. This is worst case scenario for companies like Microsoft. For example, would Microsoft shy away from launching a patent infringement battle against red-hat? I don't think they would flinch. But would they launch the same battle against the combined patent portfolio of IBM/Sony/Phyllips/Novell/Red-Hat?

  8. Novell's Long Term Status? Good on Novell Layoffs Coming This Month? · · Score: 2, Informative

Nonsense. The long term status for Novell is great. They are not in the red nor have they been for some time. Yes, NetWare could be in the toilet, but they have known that for quite some time now - Duh, that is why they went to Linux. That is one reason they are relevant for the long term.

It is the short term that the investors are concerned about. Novell's total revenue has remained steady but not growing as everyone thought it should and the investors are getting ansy.

Common everyone, keep it in perspective. Yes it is sad that they have to layoff people and they probably won't be able to contribute as much to open source as they have recently. This does not mean Novell is dead or that others will be "eating their lunch", or that their commitment to OSS has changed. They still make more money than they spend. They still have a sizable chunck of change in the bank that is not diminishing. That bank account is the primary reason their long term status is just fine.

Having a mission statement does not imply unity. I would say the OSDL is an authority in Linux, they have a mission statement to: OSDL Mission statement

What concerns me with BSD (not particularly FreeBSD) is that each distro forks the kernel and maintains only that fork. This is not unity.

What Theo points out as a drawback to Linux is what I see as it's greatest strength. Even though "companies push their own agendas and end up squabbling", they don't fork their own kernel and say 'screw you Linus! I'll go maintain my own kernel with my own nifty thing'.

I know little about the kernel details and differences between BSD and Linux. I run my gnome and I'm happy. If it were BSD underneath I don't think I'd care.

However, the difference with linux comes from the unified community behind it: Thousands of distros, hundreds of companies, one kernel.

Maybe its just my perseption but I don't see the same kind of unity from BSD. The true wonder of Linux is not necessarily it's technology, but it's ability corral the efforts of thousands into one goal.

Its useful if you have normal reporting tools that use JDBC drivers. For example StarOffice can import data from JDBC drivers with a nice GUI - This way you don't have to know about the LDAP syntaxes or anything about LDAP except that its a Data Base. They also have an ODBC driver that only works with eDirectory(NDS). Hope that helps.
