The closer we actually get to REALLY running out of IPV4 numbers - the more IPV6 will become adopted
This is known as "Market Forces" - this is a foreign concept to many but it is the reality of this situation.
When NAT becomes insuffiecient to handle the demand - IPV6 will be ready to roll. Then every man, woman, child, insect and grain of sand will have its own PUBLIC address which we can then begin to exploit - YAY!
The internet is still international right? So what's to stop me from setting up my "illegal" unregulated free speech website in the U.K.? Cambodia? SeaLand? - whereever
What jurisdiction does the FEC have over foreign hosted political websites? What recourse whould they possibly have?
Consumers and market forces will eventually rectify any knuckleheaded notions SBC (Satanic Bastard Company) has about charging for access both ways.
For instance, they could be sued for misrepresenting what they are selling. It's not internet access they are selling but some lame boiled down "SBC approved only" access.
Consumers of thier product will soon realize that they can either buy SBC "internet" access or some real ISP access from someone else.
All RBOCs suck donkey balls anyway - they just flail harder and harder as they drown... I admit, its fun to watch!
a) Your timeline - 5 years? do you think in 5 years we all will have to throw out our expensive audio gear? replace every fucking CD player? in cars, portables, boom boxes etc? The marketplace will react how to that exactly - positively? It's audio for crying out loud - what killer app will suplant cheap digital stereo? Quadraphonics? There needs to be a marketplace driver for change to happen on this. SACD and that other one whatever it is - have been around for while and haven't exactly taken off
b) Ok lets say they do that eventually - there will need to some kind of industry standard to make that feasible (5 years? lol! but i digress). Lets say that this standard copy protection thing-a-ma-jig is pretty good and it gets accepted by the marketplace and is propagated fully ----- how many DVD Jon's will be out there working on this problem? How long will it take before its utterly hacked to shreds? How long will it take before I can buy modded hardware from Hong Kong?
Please don't get me wrong about this, I share your fear on this one and I don't mean to be confrontational on this - I just needed to rant a bit
I think we all need to put a little faith in the marketplace (and H@X0Rz!) on this one
I don't get it - I was totally harrassed by at least 4-5 calls per night before this list came along.
Not only has it blocked almost 95% of the bullshit, it kicked in almost instantaneously. The execptions for charities are annoying/minor. Some utiliies and banks I do business occasionally bug me with the claim that I opted-in somehow - or that its just a "courtesy call.."
Of course this is understandable - teenage kids go on crime sprees all the time .... ... oh wait a minute

... the key words I look for are "Windows Public Beta"
Great - now how do we lobby a district attorney to go after Sony?
Who's the doochebag that went after DVD Jon? - Lets melt his phone lines until he knuckles under!
Interesting ... cool idea
How did you know I was a Libertarian?
Just like anything else, market forces will dictate when this gets adopted.
Are we really running out of IPv4 numbers? The market will tell us.
Is there a killer app for IPv6? The market will tell us.
Can we ram IPv6 down everyone's throat? The market will retailiate and hit back.
BTW - what's with this "wont somebody please think of the children" bullshit about? If we need to get to IPv6 - we'll get to it - relax already!
Wouldn't Sony be at least somewhat liable here? - I would love to see Sony get hammered for this one
I know this was posted under "hardware.slashdot.org" - But I propose a new section for this item
How about "vaporware.slashdot.org"?
I'm probably being naive here but -

D00d - like - my Quake 4 ping time will totally rock with this ...
Since when is setting up a honeypot considered "Vigilante"?
.... another funny name for the most hated phone company in America.
It used to be SBC = "Satanic Bastard Company"
You know your right - Having the U.N. run the internet is a briliant idea. I mean the U.N. does everything so well.
Then instead of these kind of fights we can all hold hands across the world and sing kum-bye-yah or whatever...
Yes, yes - fucking briliant
Please - For the last time - We dare you to start your own internet ...
Please do it - please please please!
We (the USA) hereby officially DARE the europeans to disconnect themselves from the internet.
Ok - so they can track the printing to a serial number on the printer.
How do they connect the serial number to the user?
They only way I can think of is warranty registrations - which are typically bullshit marketing tools anyway.
Now I have two reasons not to fill those out.
Trillian.
nuff sed
Was it just me or do those two words together in a headline conjur up something else ;)
IMHO - As far as the disgruntled Europeans go - I say fuck em! Let them start their own internet!
My guess is that Gmail was the key to this. Google wants to become your storage for all your documents as well as help you author them
Ok - I see your point, but I disagree with

... how the analog hole works
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_hole
Yes the DRM will be circumvented eventually - but if it doesn't - there always is that pesky analog hole to fall back on
If the parent comment is a flame/troll - then Taco should get the blame for posting that in the first place
... did I just stumble into some political blog?!
What kind of bullshit Slashdot story is that anyway
Over half say it doesn't work?
