Some of the posts alluded to this, but the ultimate goal of SACD and, to a lesser extent, DVD-A is a format that the major content producers control, their by eliminating indie labels and musicsian from producing and selling high quality recordings. If you're a independent musician, and want to sell high quality recordings off your web site? You're stuck with cd's. If DVD-A is really an "open" standard, then maybe DVD pressers can press DVD-A's for anyone with enough money, much like CD pressers now can do for people who will pay for the glass masters and can deliver something to make that master from.

Check your local bookstore for the issue and checkout the whole interview. He's quite against all this crap, and prefers the existing system and chasing down people who records and then sells recordings without licensing first. He actually said in the interview that he wants people to record and give tapes to their friends. Note "give". Anyway, go read it on the newstand and be surprised.

Am I the only one here that remembers the 9 fingers demo? That was awesome when it came out! Hell, it still is considering what it did with the hardware available, mot 68000, and 3 custom chips, and 1 meg of ram. I downloaded the demo way back when on a Supra 2400 modem, wrote the image on 2 floppies. Put the two floppies in my A500 internal drive, and the other in my A1010 external drive, and booted it up. My jaw was literally on the floor during the whole demo. It looked like a music video on MTV. Granted, it wasn't really video, but it looked damn like it, with music! Ahhh, the nostalgia. Too bad my Nec 3D monitor died, otherwise, I'd hook up the old A500 to watch the demo...wonder if the floppies are still good. Guess its time to search the net for an emulator and the demo disc images.

This is so true, regarding the silly european carriers choosing wcdma instead of cdma2000, which can be deployed in existing spectrum, since it only needs 1.25mhz of bandwidth. This article does not mention 1xEV-DO, which also runs in 1.25mhz of bandwidth, but delivers 2.4mbps. It is already commercially deployed in South Korea, and Verizon is trialing it in Washington D.C., and San Diego. See here for details on that. Monet Networks is also trialing 1xEV-DO.

And why is this bad? If anything, we need this in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, we fed+state tax is almost 40% for the middle class. If almost all of the public transit systems need subsidies from the government, how do you suppose it'll sustain itself? Public transport system should have fares set to a value so that it can sustain the system, not require subsidies like they do now. If people riding them see that the REAL cost of using mass transit, they may think more about what OTHER alternatives there are, such as car pooling, bike riding, a highly efficient scooter, etc. I read about all this stuff of dis-incentives to use cars, ie, HOV lanes, take a lane for light rail, etc, but who are YOU to determine that mass transit is the best, or make the city's transport system unfairly biased to mass transit? I see this problem especially bad in San Francisco in particular, where they refuse to build more parking, but people still drive their cars. If the government was really "for the people", they would build more parking. I'm not against mass transit at all, but it needs to be balanced with the needs of drivers as well, and not treat them second class to people who ride transit. Both needs to be treated as equals.

Both Verizon and Sprint (smarter companies imho) are upgrading the cdmaOne network to cdma2000 (backwards compatible, meaning existing cdmaOne phones will work on the new network, just not get the higher speeds). Verizon already has cdma2000 1xRTT up in the SF bay area, Salt Lake City, and the most of the Eastern seaboard. Peak speed is 144kbps, nominal in the 60kbps range, which is slightly better than the GSM/GPRS solution. And see the above post about the 1xEV-DO network, which is already deployed commercially in S. Korea, where World Cup fans will be able to watch instant replays on their Video-on-Demand cell phones! A side note, check out Monet Wireless using cdma2000 1xEV-DO to give rural users wireless broadband access.
GSM is dead, Europe is trying to move off of it to wCDMA/UMTS, but they need new bandwidth to do so, hence the recent airwave auction in Europe that is about to bankrupt the wireless companies. While companies deploying cdma2000 can deploy on their existing frequencies, and it is also more efficient than wCDMA. AT&Turd and Cingusux are stupid (imho) to upgrade NOW to GSM, they should just upgrade to wCDMA or cdma2000.

In this particular case, they were DESTROYING (or more appropriate, KILLING) embryos at the end of the experiment. What does that say about how much we value human life? Some groups in the world value non-human lives more than human lives! You know who I'm talking about. I find it a little hypocritical of people to support "green" causes like conservation of forests, but be pro-choice. How can people like that justify themselves? 9/16/00 SHOOTING WOMEN AIR RIFLE Gold Nancy Johnson United States
And a gold one at that! Did we here about it? If it was a more politically correct sport, I'm sure it would have been plastered all over. Oh well, I'm holding out hope that we will see some biathlon coverage this year. I participated in "summer biathlons" while in high school, where you run 1 mile, shoot 5 targets, run 1.5 mile, shoot another 5, then finish with another 1 mile of running. It was quite a challenge to shoot while your heart is pounding 100+ bpm, when I usually take shots at like 60 bpm or so in match situations.
