Yea... this is complete bullshit. I would love to buy something... but I am not going to New York to do it. I am not going to order a catalog. This is what ebay is for.
Realistically, that doesn't really give them much information to work from,
I call BS. If it doesn't give them much to work from then why do they want to do it? Obviously some valuable information can be found out this way, or they wouldn't be doing it at all.
Is there some resource to find out *WHICH* DVDs have advertisements before you buy them? I seem to find out afterwords. I am *INCREDIBLY* pissed about the Season 2 Dead Like Me box set having a two minute unskippable anti-piracy advert, *ON EVERY DISC*. You just paid 50$ for a box set and they're reminding you not to pirate it. From now on I pirate anything with an advert.
These companies that want us to buy expensive TV's, movies, and the like are the *SAME* companies outsourcing anything that looks like a decent job to "low cost regions". Which means their customers (US workers) can hardly afford these things, which means the companies will now have to cut costs more agressively (more outsourcing).
What I'm saying is, there are cultural aspects to being poor. I don't disagree with nearly anything you've said, except that their is a link between culture and poverty.
When I was in college I had a boss who was from India. The guy came here literally with nothing, worked and LIVED in a 7-11... fast forward 10 years, the guy owns a half dozen franchise sandwich shops, several houses, cars, etc. And he did it all with hard work and being smart.
Now I think about a lot of my friends who started with a lot more, and ended up with a lot less, in comparison to him... the difference was the willingness to work hard and be smart about things. And that *IS* cultural.
As someone whose been through some really hard times... Id like to offer you this advice:
The best thing you can do to make yourself recession proof is to keep your skills sharp, and make yourself extremely valuable to your customers. I am a "Software Architect" and I do consulting on the side... What I *DON'T* mean doing, is being an ass and hiding source code, and trying to lock in customers and what not... What I do mean is, become the guy that the VP calls whenever theres trouble.
Yes you still need to sock money away, but the root of your problem is you don't have confidence in *YOUR* ability to provide value to an employer/customers.
I've never understood people who get laid off for 3 years...
Dude, it just happens. I graudated college in 2002, just after the tech bust and just after 9/11. I had a *LOT* of job experience already due to working through college (3 and a half years), and I did not get a *real* job until 2005. Almost all of my friends were in the same boat. I knew fully accredited teachers delivering pizza... Once a friend who tried to help me get a shitty sysadmin job at a bank -- he said there was nothing he could do when they recieved 1200 applications. Thats how bad the market was.
My point is, that if you can't imagine being unemployed for 3 years, you haven't seen some really hard times. Which I hope you never have to see, and I never have to see again.
The most important factor in schools is, Parents. Students whose folks have done well, do well. Students whose folks have not done well, don't do well.
The issues is entirely cultural. Asians do the best in school because their culture stresses education highly. Whites do next best beacuse their culture stresses education somewhat. Blacks and Latinos do poorly because their cultures simply do not value education.
I know i am going to get flamed as a racist, but this is simply the reality of the situation. The only bright side is that anyone willing to work has a decent shot at the whole thing.
I know someone will say "but schools in (insert town) are horrible". Schools in (insert town) are horrible because good teachers don't want to work in the shit part of town and possibly get shot for rotten pay to teach students who don't give a shit.
I am a HUGE Sam n Max fan (as well as most other lucas arts titles that aren't star wars). I don't want to *SUBSCRIBE* to a gaming service and pay to play Sam N Max? I want to pay $60, get a box and a CD and play it wherever and whenever I want. 15 Years later I still play the Monkey Island titles.
Two points: Yes XP is much more stable than any windows os previously.
However, I find myself rebooting XP often due to lockups of other programs. Word eats shit and you cant close it, nor load a new copy of word. Codecs somehow lock up and you can't play a new video until you reboot. Sometimes while stable the system just gets sluggish.
These things never happen to me in Linux unless I have a bad piece of hardware (which Linux needs to handle better BTW).
I have seen a rash of XP computers lately with damaged system32 directories. It happened to two of my machines and I thought it was perhaps just a weird coincidece... but a couple co-workers had the same thing happen (the machine is trashed afterwords). Which leads me to believe its a bigger issue.
Im sorry... stupid shit pisses me off and you said some stupid shit. Your argument that there is only right and wrong and that since it is nearly impossible to be right than I might as well be wrong, is stupid.
I refuse to debate this point because its juvenile. You followed up your stupid thoughts with the gem, "Not practical? Then swallow your self-righteousness and buy that iMac." which was clearly insulting. So for that you recieved the fucktard comment, which you richly deserved.
Then after insulting me you chide me for "getting pissed when people argue back" which is also a stupid thing to say since you were the one who started with the insults.
In short, please fuck off:) I will not respond to or read further comments:)
You seem to have missed the point. Whats the point in trading in MS for an equally opressive Apple? Cooler looking and more expensive hardware? They can't say its faster anymore since its PC hardware. I run linux everywhere I can, and where I can't I run windows. I also listen to a lot of small artists music, but like some mainstream bands to. I buy movies now and then, some big studio movies, some little ones. I don't eat much meat, but I do eat some.
Most of all, I don't need fucktards on Slashdot with your grade school logic.
Yes they do. I am a Unix geek, and I will *NOT* buy Apple hardware (although I want to, badly!) because of stuff like this. To me, Apple is every bit as bad as the RIAA or MPAA or Scientologists or MS, or any of those guys we love to hate.
What are you talking about? The pentium *IS* a "small, simple processor". Do you remember the first pentiums? 60mhz? Thats probably what they are using.
So basically is Visual Basic 6 all over again?

Every year the government and big corps find ways to make things a little harder for you. Its not a conspiracy, just every entity on the planet trying to amass power and money at your expense.
That was the parent comments typo, mr funnyman.
Hah, theres always someone on slashdot willing to be an asshole for no reason ...

Stop drinking the koolaid.

I don't know why I even bother. Thanks for the support.
The circle is now complete

Zope encourages automated testing strongly ... too bad the rest of the thing is the titanic.

I think thats a lie of sorts though. Ignoring the cultural aspect is just willfull blindness.

It is my understanding that 60 and 66mhz pentiums are still made for embeded systems. I have been wrong before however

This sounds very disturbing.

If France wants it, its probably bad for us.
If we want it, its probably something good for a corporation and bad for us.
In other words, there are no good guys, ourselves included. The French are hopelessly corrupt, so are we. Live on Xenu.net :)
Yes. The advert is stupid, as is discussing it :) Discussing advertising is like discussing excrement: Rarely a worthwhile endeavour.
