"There have been attempts. The Offspring come to mind, with their pro-Napster stance. (Question: are the still pro-p2p? Are they still a BAND?) But their rebellion was too early, and they were "just a punk band" so I guess few listened."
Yes, they're still alive and doing well. They have a track on the new Orange County soundtrack, actually. Anyways, they have all of their music on their site, although most of it isn't in mp3 format.
Don't forget that even if every open source OS out there was allowed to implement the technology, users could just take that code out. The corporations can't have that, so suddenly OSS becomes illegal.
This brings a whole new meaning to the "Open source is free speech" merchandise on Think Geek.
While IANACSS (I Am Not A Computer Science Student) yet, it seems to me that anyone really interested in developing knows that there's more than MS's Visual Studio out there. Those who have taken the time to get their feet wet on their own, and not through a class, have (hopefully) heard that MS isn't everything. I wouldn't be surprised if the people that show up are *nix junkies like you and your friend.
Of course, your school could be filled with XP-hugging wankers who are taking CS because they heard programming jobs paid well.
I would guess that most companies see telecommuting as a perk in and of itself. That being the case, i doubt they would want to pay extra for you to do it. I wonder if telecommuters get more or less done in a work day. If not, the company has NO incentive what so ever to pay for your telecommuting "perk".
The Morpheus folks have just redone a few interface elements in Gnucleus and called it their own. They didn't even have the brains to change all the dialog boxes with "Gnucleus" in them. I was just playing around and got a message telling me to restart Gnucleus for the settings to take effect. Odd, i was in "Morpheus's" client. It also uses all the settings i had in Gnucleus proir to installing this "new" client.

No, they torment the little mommy-and-daddy pleasers that have to flaunt their "brains" to the whole class. In my elementary and middle school classes i was just as smart, if not smarter, than the kids who were picked on for being brains. What separrated(sp, its late) me from them? When i got my math test back, I didn't scream "I GOT AN A+ WOOHOO" and insist on showing the grade to everybody in the whole building. Kids don't hate smart kids. They hate smart asses who think they're something.
There is a difference between using your important talents and flaunting them like you're God's gift to the world. The same goes for physical gifts and abilities. Nobody likes the jock who has to show off every chance he gets, but i've yet to hear of someone (other than a goth) bitch about somebody being good at football.
"The way I see it, the only way they can enforce the software aspect is to only allow 'trusted' parties to write any code whatsoever. I refuse to live under those kinds of restrictions."
Suddenly the "Open source is free speech" bumper stickers at Think Geek make a hell of a lot more sense to me.
I wonder if the video tape itself is a legitmate witness in this sense. Or what if a cop just watched the video tape? He'd have seen you speeding. I wonder if the Constitution has anything about whether or not the witness has to be there in person. Probably not, since video wasn't around when it was drafted, but interesting none the less.
Marketing information that is used correctly can be a very cool thing.
I WANT to know about good deals on the latest games for the systems i own and the gaming genras i enjoy. I WANT to know that Website X is having a great deal on this piece of hardware i've been shopping for. I DON'T want to know that Website Y is selling "natural" Viagra. I DON'T want my inbox filled with spam for printer toner that WON'T WORK with my printer.
The question is, when will the marketing oafs go beyond the "FIND EVERYONE'S EMAIL AND SPAM SPAM SPAM" mentality to the "This person has been looking at reviews for x product, and z website is having a sale on it. SPAM THEM" (of course, that wouldn't necessarily be spam - the person could actually want the info)?
Not true. Humans, and animals in general, don't seek out a mate that is unique or different - if we did that, we'd all want to date cerebral paulsy(sp?) sufferers - they certainly stand out from the crowd.
What we look for is the person with the traits we'd like in a child. Hundreds of years ago, the fatter a woman became, the more beautiful she was. Why? Because back then, starvation was a big worry. Someone who was very heavy most certainly didn't have trouble with a lack of nutrition (or so they thought).
In today's society, people who are overweight are looked down upon - we assume they are that way because they sit around on the couch all day - that makes them weak. We assume they stuff their faces 24/7 - their self control is lacking. Since starvation is no longer a concern, we have turned towards another trait - strength.
I hope that makes sense, otherwise, its just the cold medicine talking...
I haven't seen a movie in the theaters in over a year. Why? No, not because i download the handi-cam rips off of Morpheus. I just don't have anyone to go with. I think the MPAA should be sueing my friends and all the girls that have turned me down.
I love my SonicWall SOHO2; its one of the few NAT firewall boxes with statefull packet inspection and a 100mbps WAN port. It isn't exactly cheap though.
I believe the router he was referring to was the kind sold by Linksys, more accurately dubbed NAT firewall + other goodies boxes, not the powerhouses that CISCO sells.
Not true. Blizzard's response was directed at the people questioning why they don't tell the bnetd people how to check the keys themselves. At least that's the way it seems.
What the above poster was referring to was having the bnetd servers forward the keycheck to a blizz server. Not perfectly secure, but better.
What i think would work best is forcing the client to do the keycheck at a Blizzard server, but allowing the user to select what game/chat server to connect to, be it one of the battle.net realms, or a bnetd server.
Of course, this is all completely off topic.

A DoS isn't exactly cracking...
That adds a whole new level of weirdness to bestiality.

Unfortunately, there are still people out there who think that AOL is the Internet.

By "what makes the most sense" you mean "what copy-paste function will our secretaries be able to understand", right?

So i could start my own home business that does market research on those lovely celebs that don't return my mail?

It happens all the time - ever hear of involuntary manslaughter, or negligent homicide?

Try OpenBSD. I an OS just begging to be used as a firewall.
And printer toner.

Well, seeing as our current government bends to whatever the big corporations want, that point is kind of moot.
