Exploring doesn't get us any money. That's what people care about.
"wow, there's more black stuff out here. And look, red stuff on that planet! Amazing!"
Yeah, its cool, but does that get the people of American more gas for their SUVs? Does that line the pockets of movie and music industry execs? Unfortunately, the people who control the funding for stuff like this really only care about getting enough money in order to campaign for their reelection in 4 years.
Can we REALLY trust the government to be that smart, though? I don't know many over-the-hill white men, but its my experience that they know little more than nothing about computers and the internet. I doubt they're as forward thinking as (a portion of) the slashdot crowd is.
I agree that the guards were WAY out of line, they should have contacted a superior if they didn't know who/what Mann was. However, i would rather have had them be cautious instead of lazy. Imagine the media frenzy there would be had someone posing as Mann boarded a plan and blew it to smitheriens(sp).
First off, airport security guards aren't the most intelligent form of life on this planet. If they were they wouldn't be working a $7/hour job.
Secondly, Mann, with wires sticking out of him and such, might have looked like a walking bomb to these people. If someone can hide C4 in his shoe, but get busted because of some detonator wires, someone else could just fake a computer, only in the "battery" pack on his hip stick a big block of C4.
What, a detonator? No, those are my LCD glasses...
Someone with something more than a room-temperature IQ could have checked with the proper people and avoided this whole thing.
Still, would you have rather had this happen, or have some whacko posing as a "cyborg" board a 747 and blow it to bits in the middle of the Atlantic? Where the security guard's actions correct? No.
You missed my point. Sure, they can do it here on earth, but we don't have to haul that protection into space. It would make sense for NASA to line the ship with lead, but imagine having to carry all that into space. If i remember correctly, a good part of a sub's weight is protection from the reactor (i could be wrong on that, however). Having to lug all that into space would be very expensive, even compared to today's space flight costs.
He makes a point about radiation being one of space's harmful effects. If we can't keep the sun's radiation away from our astronauts, how do we keep the reactor in the rocket from irradiating the crew?

EFF Takes Bnetd Case

· Score: 1
The deal with BNetD, that has already been stated, is that it allowed people to used pirated software, and blizz refused to give out its keycheck algorithm. They are within their rights to do that.
The reason BNetD has a chance is that Blizz could EASILY have the game do its keycheck algorithm to the main b.net server, and then allow the game to connect to a server of the user's choosing.
The only problem is that keeping several people from using the same key at once is harder. Maybe they could implement something like won.net has with half-life and CS?
'Try to get the GPS working again before we enter the harbor in this fog.' "Signal houses, radio, harbour controlled tugboats, maps that use co-ordinate systems..."
Sure, that works if the GPS just explodes, but what if there's a bug that gives your position 100 yards west of where you should be? I don't believe that those analog fail-safes are always in use in conjunction with the GPS; they're just in place should something go wrong. But then again IANASC (I Am Not A Ship Crewman).
Practicality is of no concern to the RIAA. It isn't THEIR job to implement the technology, the tech people at other companies have to do that.
Just look at the SSSCA - is hardware copyprotection easily implemented, if possible at all? No. Do the RIAA/MPAA etc. care? No.
If running a server is that big a deal, you shouldn't have bought a Mac in the first place. Paying $3000 for a PowerMac just to use it as a server is pointless. Put together a pent 133 for that.
Everybody hates constant, unavoidable battles in RPGs. I really wish the game designers would get that through their skull.
Not to go too off topic or anything, but i'd have to say that the perfect solution to random battles was one implemented in pokemon- you could buy an item that would prevent random battles with creatures that were lower levels than your own for a certain amount of time. Every RPG should have a feature similar to that.
I don't have a problem with that the GPL or any other Free Software. I was pointing out that the technologies listed by the original poster- meta-information, mutliple segmented downloads- were not Morpheus' to begin with, and it doesn't seem that they're moving towards implementing that tech, based on this preview release.
The only problem with Morpheus using their own cool tech is that... well, they have none. They just put interface buttons in Gnucleus and called it their own. Hell, they didn't even bother to change all the dialog boxes containing info such as "please restart Gnucleus" to "Please restart Morpheus".
Ever wonder why Kazaa and Morpheus looked exactly the same? Its because they were. Morpheus is basically just selling add space in a program they've renamed as their own.
If i build a case just like that, and it causes no interference in my house, would somebody still suffer from the interference? I dont' think so, but then again, I'm no expert.

Until you start trying to smash down the "tent" in your pants, you mean.
As Lou Gerstner says, after ten years running a company change needs to occur otherwise you become stale and uncreative...
The problem with relating that to MS is that they were never creative in the first place.
What's next, a ban on using any OS other than XP in a machine that XP is installed on? I could see it happening.
Knowing M$, you could just enter in 100 numbers for your PIN and gain access to a whole bunch of accounts at once.
I love buffer overflows.

Muchos points for you my friend. I checked for it at Amazon just last week and it wasn't there. Ahh well, maybe i'll wait for the DVD... :)
Definately, Steve is nuts. Great flick, and great acting, especially on Whiley(sp)'s part.
:(
I'm a bit bummed that i haven't seen it for sale in stores or online, however. And it isn't to be found on any of the p2p networks either...

Are you sure that being able to watch porn in anywhere is a good idea? The temptation to wank in public would be too great for most of us to stand.

I haven't found many RPGs i like, Pokemon is probably my fav. And i don't like anime.

Oh yeah?
Bettering its sales, you mean. It still has some of the highest quality games out there, namely Shenmue.
