Not all is lost amongst us new (I'm 16) timers. I just started wandering into the OSS community (installed FreeBSD a week ago, but had to wipe the partition because i messed up XF86 and KDE), and I'd LOVE to tinker around in my computer. I couldn't tell you how many times i've said "you know, this app would be great if it could only do this...", and with OSS, i can add that (as soon as i get past this "hello, world" stuff, that is =) ). I can't explain to you how cool i think being able to do things like that is, but i think most of the/.ers probably know where I'm coming from.
Games and all are fun, but programming is something i'd really love to do, and i would love to contribute to the OSS community as soon as i can, and I know I'm not the only one in my age group to feel that way.
Oh, and there's a big difference between knowning how to debug a home network (which i can do) and code something well (which i cannot do).
Yeah, to fatten the movie execs wallets. I've yet to see deliberate product placement in any of the indy films i've watched (which are admittidly few). The big film companies don't need these advertisements if they produce a quality flick. Of course, that hasn't happened in a while...
They robots don't need true AI. Have you ever had your ass kicked by the computer in Starcraft or a similar strategy game? I sure have. It doesn't take human emotions or "true" thought to tell a bunch of robotic tanks to roll over D.C.
Heh, well i just spent 4 days getting FreeBSD up and running on my box (still can't get XF86 to work right) and then they release 4.5. I'm a newb to *nix in general, so upgrading is gonna be FUN. I'd like to get X going first though. Anybody know how to use XDM?:)
Don't let the riff-raff in is exactly the point. First off, most parents of 12 year olds won't shell out $10/month for their kid to play a game online. And those parents that do either A) really like spoiling their kid or B) know their son is more "mature" than other 12 year-olds. I doubt many parents would have like paying $10/month to let their son/daughter play Pokemon. So right there you've cut out at least 50% of the spammers and script kiddies.
The country club analogie is a loose one at best. They are the way they are because of the elitist attitude of the upper class citizens that run them. This is to keep out the people who aren't as "sophisticated" and wealthy as they are. In this pay-to-play scheme for online games, the fees isn't outrageous - $10/month is nothing for most people. And those who can't afford it and are USUALLY the biggest problem in the online gaming scene, adolescents with all the time in the world on their hands, are filtered out. If they only wanted rich people to play the games it'd cost $75/week for each character you have in Everquest.

I know people who pay alot more than $30/month for their cable/satelite + premium channels, so $30/month for a game isn't that bad.
There's a difference between deterioration from use and deterioration from abuse. Rub your VHS cassete with sandpaper and it stays fine. Rub the tape inside it by playing it in the VCR alot and it'll turn to crap. I've yet to hear of the lasers in DVD players wearing out whatever the ones and zeros are stored on.
The original poster has a point, he just chose to word it poorly. I'd expect VHS tapes to last much longer than DVDs (my local stores have some from the 80s, maybe earlier) simply because people can treat them like trash and they'll still work. I have friends who just leave stacks and stacks of CDs or DVDs on their computer desks or living room floor.
Apple isn't a true competetor. You have to have Apple's proprietary hardware to run the OS, so Joe Sixpack doesn't have the option of installing OS X on his 6-month-old Dell.
I'm paying for 5 e-mail addresses with my Charter Communications cable modem setup. They have not given me one. The status on when they'll be ready has been "soon" for over a year.
The people i know that use Yahoo on a regular basis, "AOL users and computer neophytes," use it because of its brand name. Most have never heard of google.
The GEEK wants features, speed, colour screens, all sorts of applications, etc.
Last i checked there were more apps for the Palm OS than the version of Wince the PPC uses.
What good is speed? My Sony Clie responds instantly to whatever i do - its not like i need a high framerate for entering Graffiti. I don't need an AMD Thunderbird for memos/calculations/etc. Ooh... you can play Quake2 at 3fps on your PPC. Too bad the controls are for shit. All that and its only twice as thick and a whole lot wider than my Clie.
And if you wanna talk screen quality, take a look at Sony's line of Palm OS devices.
The good ole' "security through obscurity" policy, eh?
Enough to knock you out for a couple hours at least.

No, those high school and college kids will just pirate it.
LAN party :)
That depends on your definition of a good idea. Whatever makes the company money is a good idea.
Its their internet access that sucks. Take a look at www.dslreports.com and see for yourself.

In lamens terms - every time a packet gets to a router the MAC addresses (there's two - sender and reciever) are ripped off and changed.

I'd buy a $150 GPS addon for my Sony Clie. I'd pay $20/month for 56k wireless access on my Sony Clie. I won't pay $70/month for both.
gat dang it. Stupid HTML posting. Had my previous post been in plain text...
All you need to know how to do is #include

What about .FUD?
Also, never put them in a slot-loading CD or DVD-ROM. You'll never get it out.
Bah, the first sentence is a quote. Forgot to submit as plain text.
