There's definitely no such thing as a "necessary war".
Only if you don't believe survival is necessary. For those who do believe in their survival and are placed in mortal peril then war is necessary, it is self defense.
Tactile cues to indicate target/threat orientation? With all the vibrations and jarring movement a pilot normally experiences I'm not surprised it didn't pan out. I recall research using positional audio to give pilots threat cues with audible warnings appearing to come from the direction of the threat. I never heard of anything coming out of that research, I wonder where it went wrong.
Isn't it ironic that the team allegedly invading privacy is called the Patriots?
What privacy? These people gave their info to an online retailer, of course it is going to be shared with 3rd parties. The only thing different in this case is that the retailer is not getting paid to share the info.
Why? Google is all about targeted advertising. Better profiles on us just lets them deliver better ads. These profiles are what Google, Microsoft, etc are all fighting over.
I say, might it be possible to equip all americans with firearms, and let you guys sort your own mess out over there? We could use some space. A nation with armed dumbasses.
I'd show the armed dumbasses a little more respect. Given your phraseology you are probably from a country that was either (a) liberated by the armed dumbasses or (b) saved from blockade, starvation, and invasion by the armed dumbasses. Also, parts of the US were there is a greater percentage of firearm ownership tends to be safer. So you are correct that things can sort themselves out, but you are incorrect in the manner in which that is achieved. You wouldn't be getting any space.
True, but in a good way. It's a pretty harrowing experience for the innocent victim but at least it was just a prank
'Prank' is a very poor choice of words. A prank does not put innocent people in mortal jeopardy. SWAT teams are trained for high risk arrests and when they make an entry they are a fraction of a second away from firing. If that innocent husband or wife accidentally made a suspicious/threatening move they may have been killed.
"How can they be attacking Open Source projects on one hand, and seeking not only to use open source methods, but even to use the OSI Approved Open Source trademark?"
Extend, embrace.
No. MS is not anti-OSS, they use BSD code for example. They are merely anti-GPL.
Maybe it's just me, but I thought the whole "New Testament" thing was to replace the "Old Testament" with a kinder, gentler religion. I think it's been deliberately changed to "Thou Shalt Not Kill" because it's more in line with the teachings of Jesus.
Your argument that the New Testament supercedes the Old is a valid one, however to intentionally alter the Old Testament would have been considered heresy, man can not edit God's words. An honest mistake is far more likely.
Specifically while the Old Testament clearly approves of warfare, I don't think the New Testament does. Many people seem to forget that to be "Christian" you're supposed to follow the New Testament first and foremost.
That is a topic that has been debated for millenia. By the same logic we should have no police as well. The vast majority of Christian denominations accept the need for a police and a military and agonize over what is an appropriate response. 'A contemporary view of just cause was expressed in 1993 when the US Catholic Conference said: "Force may be used only to correct a grave, public evil, i.e., aggression or massive violation of the basic human rights of whole populations."'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_war.
Interestingly, even among those minorities who do literally accept "though shall not kill" and "turn the other cheek" military service is not necessarily prohibited. Some have served in combat as medics.
Condensation is "still" a problem because it's one of the big and tricky ones. To get rid of the condensation, you have to get rid of the people.
Condensation is *not* a tricky problem, dehumidifying and air conditioning technology is old and well understood. Cool air, water condenses and is collected, heat air, repeat. As another poster has pointed out, spacecraft are not the only sealed environments, submarines have been successfully addressing this problem for decades. The real problem is not condensation, the real problems are mass and power. Power probably being the dominant problem here.
they should be there because they're interested in the religion, not because they wanna get a mad sic deathmatch in after church lets out.
Keep in mind that congregations do more than worship, there is a heavy social component as well. Historically they have been a major source of off-line social networks, why not on-line as well?
Also, consider the very discussion that we are having in this forum. That game violence exists in many different forms, and that some forms may be more acceptible than others. Isn't that a topic that should be appropriately discussed among parents, and also amongst youth?
"Thou shalt not kill" does not mesh well with "Thou shalt kill aliens in copious numbers".
Sometimes when looking at a translation dictionary you get the impression that one word translates precisely into another word. That is not true, the two words may have vastly different connotation. Also, connotations may change over time. I am no biblical scholar, but I believe that it has been well established that a more accurate translation of the ancient Hebrew text refers to "murder". not "kill".
Also, the concept of just or defensive wars is well established in most Christian churches. The Old Testament clearly approves of warfare.
I don't think range is an issue. The military is already working on hybrid armored vehicles. Fuel for long range movement, electricity for that last mile or two. A nice quiet approach. With additional charging options, mobile charging stations not unlike forward area refueling for helicopters, perhaps they could travel more under electricity.
I think switching to ethanol would still be closer to the pentagon's preferred scenario than oil.
No. The military needs to acquire resources as close to the battlefield as possible. They can not rely on ethanol coming from the US. Ethanol will be unusable until there are multiple friendly sources around the world. Sun Tzu's comments on foraging still apply in modern times.
This logistics problem is one of the things that makes space based solar so attractive.
I just thank god I had the common sense to go see Alien at a drive-in.
Seeing old movies in the theatre sometimes diminishes them. I'm not referring to Alien, its not old - I was a teenager at the time:-), but I did see 2001 in a theatre after seeing it many times on a TV screen. I loved the movie, but on the big screen the greater details makes it obvious that some backgrounds are painted, messing with my suspension of disbelief. The african savannah scenes stuck out and my attention was drawn to implementing special effects and away from the story.
Yeah, I know, I'm old. Do you guys even know what a drive-in is?
Yes, its a parking lot equipped with a large movie screen and speakers at each parking space. People either (a) drink lots of booze with their buddies or (b) get laid in the privacy of their car with fogged up windows. Either way people do not remember the movie.;-)
'It is not "thou shalt not kill," it is "you shall not murder." Read the NIV, which is a superior translation to the KJV.'
Hmmm.... I would be cautious about making such value statements.
Why would one assert that the NIV is a "superiour" translation? The King James Version was the dominant guide to Christian thought for English speaking people for more than 300 years. It would be curious to argue that the people who adhered to the guidance in the King James version were not (and are not) "inferiour" Christians to those who now use the New International Version which has only existed for (almost) the past 30 years. Given the short history of this new translation, its value, for better of for worse, is yet to be proven.
The fact that a particular translation was used for centuries is meaningless, especially given that it was at times forced upon people at the point of sword, literally. More importantly, the accuracy of the translation does not reflect upon believers. The bible is a tool. Tools can be improved, as in more precise translations. Tools can be adapted, as in updated to reflect a modern language that has added/lost words and connotations relative to an archaic forebear.
the futuristic setting flies in the face of predictions that the second coming will be any day now
I am no biblical scholar, but I am pretty sure that the bible is pretty clear that no one will know when the second coming will occur. Hard science fiction is perfectly compatible with religion. As is hard science, heck, the Vatican operates a major observatory. Research highlights include:
Dark Matter and Energy in the Cosmos
The Acceleration of the Universe
Quasars
Globular Clusters http://clavius.as.arizona.edu/vo/R1024/Research.html
Regarding that logic, why not doom?
Destroying demons seems a fairly wholesome activity!
Actually, I knew a minister that didn't mind doom. It was only when the violence was direct towards humans, as in Grand Theft Auto type games, that there was a problem. One exception, shooting Nazis was OK, of course nearly all churches supported that in real life.
Google has the same problem. Having achieved domination of their main market, now what?
Google's business is targeted advertising. They are not done there yet. I think you may be confusing new ways to gather data about us, to profile us, with new business opportunities. Search, browser ad-ons, GMail, web-based apps, mapping and directions, news, etc are all designed to gather more info about us so that they may charge web sites for delivering more optimal ads to our eyeballs.
Every four or eight years in the US, the leader of the executive branch leaves and is replaced by someone else. I would hardly call that a crisis.
There is nothing in the article to hint that Thunderbird's continued existence is threatened in the least.
What a bad analogy, it disproves your assertion. The executive's departure is well known in advance, his departure is never a surprise. There is never a gap in leadership in the executive branch. The incoming and outgoing executive branches coordinate and work together for months to ensure an orderly transition. Similar things happen in companies, when there is no crisis. Sorry, Thunderbird is experiencing a crisis. Are crisis necessarily fatal? No, but denying that one exists is one way to increase the probability that it will be fatal.
"Designed in the USA" is probably hurting them worse in France.
Actually Apple is popular in France, major executives have been French.
You might also check up on current events, when French and German citizens got to vote the results turned out a bit different than what the mass media wanted to portray. Candidates friendly to the US won.
When I was in Paris last year I was treated very well. Even though my French language skills are nearly non-existent. Disagreeing with a government's policy decision does not translate into a population hating companies or citizens.

Why is harvesting info from gmail a surprise? They had been using search to profile individuals to deliver targeted ads for quite a while.
it really makes you question their ultimate goals

It takes the military to come up with a REALLY stupid idea.
Like the internet, canned food, etc?
That's right where my head went, too. But if it's geosynchronous it'd be hard for them to hit any of the usual targets.
I'd wager the goal is to have a network of them in orbit to give global coverage.
I think switching to ethanol would still be closer to the pentagon's preferred scenario than oil.

Please note that not all Christians adhere to this though and consider the original commandment something without exceptions.
The original commandment referred to "murder" not "kill". "Kill" is an imprecise translation of the original Hebrew.
