    Anyways, since HP had a hand in with Intel in designing the Merced, will it also be able to emulate PA-RISC based software in addition to x86 software?

    Like anyone who buys an iMac is actually going to consider taking it anywhere.

    If I wanted a portable PC, I'd either get a laptop with some 3D, or a MicroATX PC and at MINIMUM a 17" monitor.

    They do not help parents make informed decisions, they make the decision for the parent, who rarely questions it, because "there had to be a reason for it", as stupid as we might find the reason to be. And they do constitute censorship when the stupid ticket people "cover my eyes" for me when they refuse to sell me a ticket. Or when the theater refuses to show unrated or NC-17 movies, even though that unrated movie might have made THE greatest point in recent history about a serious issue, albiet taken in a way someone found offensive to themselves. You should sit with your kid and watch where they go if it absolutely concerns you.

    My theory, as is many others, is that a kid young enough won't be affected by something like porn, because they'll just be grossed out, or racism, as that takes some deliberately misguided high level thought to reason that crap out.

    Theory: If they're old enough, they were probably looking for it. So no point in stopping them. But if you object to it, TELL THEM in a REASONABLE manner. Don't just say "Because that's immoral" or "Because I said so". Those are just saying "Go for more and stretch the limits"

    I would think that rewriting something in C++, even if it's just up from C, would be enough to consider it an entirely new work. Especially if they had to recreate the entire program in C++.

    I still don't see the difference between "Real Programming" and using a RAD tool. Except that you don't have to rewrite lots of stuff, and it makes GUI creation a whole lot easier (but in Delphi you can make console apps!). And you can always do it down and dirty direct Win32 (or GTK/KDE) API if that trips your trigger.

    From what I gather about Borland, they don't seem stupid. Due to the nature of the VCL from Delphi for Windows, They probably have VCL Packages for BOTH (GTK and KDE) and probably will have some (special order maybe?) for other "Commercial Window Managers". So you could have your GTK widgets, your KDE widgets, and your Motif widgets at any time.

    Slackware isn't an option until slack gets all the way to glibc. As for X, they'll probably include stuff for straight X, and wrappers for Gnome, KDE, and (why) Motif even. And I think that they are trying NOT to make it dependent on one distro, but make it guaranteed to run on ALL major distros (Caldera, Debian, Slack when it hits glibc, and yes, Redhat). That alone will give them a step above the Codewarrior tools, which only run and give support for Redhat based setups.

    IDs in the chips are nothing, as long as they aren't tracked in a database with a name right after it, by say, Microsoft. And as long as they aren't used like my fingerprint (faceprint, thermal print, DNA, what have you).

    I didn't care that Microsoft was funding Inprise. It was probably a "Hey we're being nice to the competition" BS act (do you think they enjoy the fact that THE easiest AND most powerful development tool is now available on many more platforms than VB and VC++?). Inprise probably used the money to fund Delphi for Linux :)

    And apparently it wasn't the end so those people will have to eat their posts!

    This news is near the best news I have ever heard for linux in a long time. I still hope Borland completely blows our minds and does something NOBODY expects.

    This is definitely a chink in Microsoft's armor. One less reason to stay with Windows.

    It's a "Let's just give up" attitude like this that lets microsoft own you. Don't let microsoft own you, and they never will. Show support for something else, and the companies will follow, if that's what it takes to get your money.

    after posting in comp.os.linux.m68k i was told that the 68k that the 89/92 use did not have an FPU or MMU, AND that the memory available was below the requirement of linux? Anyone wish to clarify/append info?

    Only partially. It still requires a runtime, and DLLs are still not callable like normal C/C++/Delphi dlls.

    Your case idea sounds like you are drunk. I hate sharp edges, and knobs are obsolete. Cars were MEANT to be visually pleasing, as well as comfortable. But what happens with the iCrack is that you get a nice case, with curves and a rainbow of colors is a total loss of performance, and ability, and requires totally proprietary designs. My beige box can run circles around the iCrack. But if i could do nice things with my case, I would. But it had better fit standard designs. The G3 case is sorta what we should be able to get for PCs.

    That thing deserved to be kicked. I mean, when these stylized PCs come out they have this irritating habit of becoming popular. When things like this become popular, it gives Intel reason to follow their roadmap of eventually eliminating all user accessable ports (!). Read their PC roadmap. They plan to elminate the legacy buses (serial, lpt), then get rid of ISA, then PCI, then AGP. And this only gives them incentive. I swear, unless people want to actually LEARN how to use a PC, they shouldn't buy one. Cheap, disposable, and irrelevant is NOT what PCs should become.

    I mean somewhere on the lines of what i gather to be the system memory use of TIOS, which is roughly 64k (?). But the TI-89 has about 1.2 Mb of flash rom into which it can write the TIOS for updates. Anyone with REALLY detailed information, please correct me if I am wrong.




    I dunno. I just got the 89 (after using the 82 for a year), and it's so nice having so much ram/archive space for stuff. Someone needs to make a perl/Python/TCL/Tk version for this thing!



    (btw, i looked at the hp48gx. I don't know. I think the TI is eaiser, yet no less powerful. maybe that's just because i have used them for so long...)

    Anyone got ideas on making a version of 68K Linux that could be loaded on a TI-89/92+ calc in the form of a FlashROM? We have the writer... and the 68K compatible kernel... now all we need is for linux to operate in 64k of ram (i think).

    because pci runs at 33mhz (1/3 100fsb) and agp runs at 66 (2/3) roughly. anything else and those end up at odd values, which cause problems for some cards, especially high speed agp cards.

    No actually those systems do make sense for people who want to try SMP, but don't have $1200 to shell out for p3s, or $6000+ for xeons. And where would you recommend we spend our money? Maybe we do, and maybe we don't...
