i have personal experience with UT: 1/4century ago i worked for a company that made turbomachinery: compressors & turbines; they built the north-sea gas re-injection compressors, world's highest-pressure centrifugal:-) carrier (the a/c maker) had acquired them in the '50s, and in the early '80s, UT scarfed up carrier & put it under the pratt&whitney division (all rotating compressors)
of course they installed a young tiger(tm) exec from p&w to turn things around in our company...the oil&gas industry was in a slump @ the time & our sales & profits were down. and of course, coming from the cost+plus world of jet engines, y.t.x. declared that we would write no business @ less than x% profit...this @ a time when the competition was selling @ a loss, just to keep orders coming in & the shop employed...
needless to say, we wrote no new business...and profits shot up! in the turbomachinery business, the money's made on parts, service & spares: 140% of our profits came from ps&s, so of course cutting losses (by laying off idled workers)-: immediately improved the bottom line...
and of course when the ps&s dried up in several years, due to the lack of recent sales, profits went south again:-( but of course the y.t.x. had already been handsomely rewarded for his stellar performance & promoted outta there:-(
i owned a 63 powerslide corvair...spun the fucker 2x braking in corners, so i know what the problem was.
but by the time uaas came out, the corvair had replaced the swing axles with a fully independent design which afforded better handling than the corvette. but nadir's book led to the end of an innovative car (they did finally solve the oil leaks on the aluminum engine;-)
the vw beetle had the same swing-axle rear suspension, so why didn't nadir attack it, too, hmmm?
i guess it's true: nobody's ever gone broke underestimating the public's intellegence;-}
is religion not a collection of survival lessons, wrapped in mnemonic stories to preserve the knowledge across generations? doesn't the bible have helpful hints like "get your drinking water _upstream_ from the latrine"? in a pre-industrial pre-scientific world the only reliable way to avoid STDs is monogamy.
and what better way to ensure compliance than to tap into the natural human spirituality circuits, invoking the authority of the deit[y|ies] spinning tales of eternal damnation for transgressors...hey, whatever works;-}
and handling waste & dead animals isn't really healthy, but a dirty job's gotta get done, so a society could relegate it to a wretched underclass isolated from the larger society...oh, let's just call 'em 'untouchables'...hey, can't argue w/ success;-}
the built-in s.r. works great for this...lifehacker.com has a good how2 on creating app.specific voice cmds.
the other issue is microphones: only built-in or hardwired work...i tried a bluetooth headset, and while i could successfully pair & tx/rx, the s.r. setup wouldn't calibrate:-(min.level was 1/2 scale)-:
i've heard that in rural china they still put hairy babies out to die...and wasn't abel a hairy man?
recent studies show women prefer the scent of men most unlike their fathers, scent & immune system being genetically related, which of course provides for diversity. but women on the pill prefer similar-smelling men...hmmm
while i did start out on punchcards & punchtape, my 1st job in the early 70s was maintaining fortranIV code that had been migrated, via fII, from the codes they developed on their ibm drum memory machines...and there were variables named for drum mem. locations...no way was i gonna change those;-)
o, yeah, another thing: the clarity of the code was inversely proportional to the brilliance of the coder, an u had 2 b brilliant 2 squeeze both speed & capability into those babies;-)
flawed, that is: u can't compare taking a physical object with accessing radio transmissions.
the law establishing the fcc made it a right to receive any transmission, and any law prohibiting such is invalid.
an open wireless, offering a connection via dhcp to anyone in range, is an invitation to enter. making it illegal to accept that invitation amounts to entrapment.
the fact that there are such absurd laws illustrates the maxim: 'the law is a ass'
my brother had a friend who liked to get drunked up & shoot out streetlights:-( the last time he did that, he wouldn't give up the gun, there was a struggle, the gun went off & mort ce mort;-(his nick was a contraction of his last name...ironic, eh, morrisette?-)
the police report claimed suicide, so of course his widow couldn't collect on any life insurance:-( but, hey, at least the cops didn't have to face any investigation...
my dad's best man was a sportscar nut...i 1st went to watkins glen with him...and i remember him telling me he used to make the trip from his home east of pittsburgh to philly in 4 or 5 hrs.
of course that's what it takes on the turnpike now, but this was on old rt 30, 2 lanes winding over the mountains & thru every little hamlet...that musta been quite the trip;-)
he was the incentive to put a tv in the bedroom; sleep & sex have declined ever since;-}
