Google is into search technology, Microsoft is into everything profitable in the desktop market. They sell a bunch of other things like Xbox, keyboards, mice etc. Google is into open source, Microsoft wants its head on a silver platter. Microsoft has been convicted atleast two times for being a predatory monopoly and has bought itself free from countless of charges and trials. Microsoft is working hard at killing any competition or startups threating to bring new cool stuff Microsoft doesnt have. This while Google is working even harder at bringing new products and just ignores the competition. Microsoft has not exactly been an catalysator for the desktop development. Without Apple we would still be using something like Windows 3.1.
Ill think ill take my chances with Google (tm) air thank you.
im perfectly aware of that but i am just as aware of the fact that we havent to date seen anything from any Microsoft research project materialising as any products. Their entire research seems more like a PR act than anything else.
When it comes to Microsoft its hard to take them seriously. Considering how much of Windows Vista and its predecessors that came out as real products and functionality everything is just pointless PR blabber. Until we see something that runs on a computer its all about appearence. Heck RMS can issue a press release tomorrow claiming to have invented an unbreakable system that can run on a calculator. Microsoft has done this before and continually does it to stop people from migrating through vaporware. "-The next version will be secure" "This new version is going to be faster than the older ones" etc...
The problem with Disney is management, not staff. I doubt that before Monsters Inc a film like that would get past the first manager in Disney. Buying a new company or a new talent wont change Disney management and inability to take any risks.
Why should a PIM be part of an office suite? Next, OO bathtub and jacuzzi? It would be better if OO dont get into feature adding mode. Instead of adding features make the ones already there better. I would much prefer if people started new projects and forks instead of trying to cram anything possible into the succesful projects. Its just piggybacking. I hate thos plier/screwdriver/hammer/axe/nailpolisher combination thingies that does everything, just very very badly. Just like office suites. I do understand the need for integration between some office apps but mail clients and calendars? Nope, cant see the connection sir.
You can take the part about linux client back. It works almost exactly like the Novel Client (yes, one l) right now. No pam integration in sight. Im currently doing a big project where i desperately would need the pam integration but i have to ditch the Novell Linux Client and run with pamncpfs or LUM instead. It really sucks for me.
I work as a network engineer and i have on numerous occasions seen this irl. A computer that just hums along on Linux is unstable as nothing else on Windows XP. It can be explained by the fact that one of the OS is more fault tolerant than the other. I always test my machines with memtest86 and there have been many times when XP BSOD when theres nothing wrong with the mem.
"As always my post will be modded zero and yet again prove that slashdot is in fact a commercial vehicle of Microsoft but with letting some of the anarchy through from the insiders that can have the official style (for the lack of a better word.) Paranoid? No I am just seing a pattern."
You can take comfort in that your not the only one having noticed that kind of pattern. From having been a holdout of mainly Linux and OSS fantasts it has in some ways been swamped by MSFT apologists. Its just like the swedish IDG site wich has been overtaken by MS VAR's and resellers faking grassroots.
You should really talk to someone who has the same contact with the US court system and police. Bribes arent something uncommon in the US. Things are done more smoothly in the US but you are fooling yourself if you think the US is better in any way than China.
And who does the Chineese rather pay their money to, a foreign company or a couple of domestic ones? I think the answer is pretty obvious. Its politics and i dont see Microsoft having any chance of alter the view of the Chineese government. China is not as corrupt as the US just yet.
Its simply a matter about what is more important, money or people. I dont like the idea of companies making money on worldwide outbreaks. Its all ok if they recoup their costs but making big profits? Hell no!
Well if you find a way of getting MS to approve you making an open source implementation then youre right. Penguins will walk the halls of Redmond and Bill Gates will have a farm of tux before they will let that happen.
I cant but agree. For me the first thing that hit my mind was Bill G wanting all media being stored under Windows powered appliances instead. Those pesky DVD things arent really tied to one vendor, namely Microsoft. I do want my media tied to a movable disc much more than i want it tied to a specific computer or appliance. I also dont believe for a second that the DRM from Microsoft will be one bit friendlier than the ones on the new DVD formats. Who will decide that, Microsoft or the media companies? Just because MS wants it nice and friendly does not say RIAA and MPAA will follow their wishes.
All DRM sucks as it tries to take away basic functions from the consumer by technichs when laws say otherwise. Its just a way to sidestep fair use law.
I dont think the problem is between AMD and DELL. Id rather believe the incentive for DELL is big juicy rebates on Intel CPU's. Its really something the DOJ and EU should take a look at.
I cant see how Intel is going to catch up without a redraw of the whole CPU structure and mem controller. Simply going for smaller die wont solve the performance problem. I really think Michael Dell was wrong in thinking that 65 nm is going to get Intel in par with AMD. This is really and interesting moment, will dell stick to Intel and deliver less performance than HP/Intel/Sun etc? At some stage they will have to start selling AMD and i suspect it will be a horrific moment for Dell. To date they always state that they use Intel because they are better but really how long can they put that charade up?
I am fairly certain its about simplicity. A dedicated appliance is so much easier to use and understand than a PC or handheld PC. I do not want to fiddle around with settings and upgrading buggy software on my mp3 player or phone.
Just like with Windows 2000 (the unbreakable) this is just a publicity stunt. Real security comes from good design, not slap together crap and let 1000 monkeys throw random bits at it.
Why these never ending non stories about Googles evilness? Wake me up when theyve done something bad. I frankly dont see anything evil about them. Maybe i shouldnt compare them to any other company on the planet and do as some do, compare them to Mother Theresa?
At work i reboot my servers when i feel its appropriate and safe, mostly by scripting and at night after the backup has run. I do my pathing by automation and i know now that all i have to do is to reboot them now and then to pickup the new kernel. I do hope someone succeed in solving online patching of the kernel, then i would probably never have to reboot!
At home i havent had any problems with security, infact i havent had anything even remotely interesting happen to my snort installation. Must be the worlds most bored IDS on the planet. Even if someone happened to gain access to my computer at home im not that worried. I have a full backup of my pr0n and it only takes me a couple of hours to reinstall Linux. If i have a kernel a couple of months old its not the end of the world.
Except that my elecricity comes from a water plant nearby. Ever seen a chimney on an hydroelectric dam? I was referring to my situation, not anybody elses. For ME its a no loss situation most of the year except for a brief summer.
I have electrical heating and every watt my computer spews out is a watt less for me to warm up with central heating. As long as the computers dont generate more heat than i have to supply from my electrical furnice its not a loss for either the planet nor the bill.
I suppose you ride your bicycle to work and never drive by car or take the bus? If you do, you have done worse for the nature in a couple of miles than a computer does in its lifetime.

Well a quick look at secunia will tell them that Internet Explorer sure looks unsupported and should be banned from the network. ;D

When Microsoft is doing their best to make Windows more like *nix!

This drives me nuts!
You know what the standard thing in Windows XP is when it BSOD`S?
The friggin computer reboots, thats why you havent seen the bsod!

Is this the very same commandline that was so cumbersome in Linux? Is it suddenly an asset just because its in MS Windows?
NIN Syndrome at its finest....
