    Thats a stupid idea. Thats called brute force. A more dynamic approach from the start is obviously a better choice.

    But thats the thing. and older person would tire of assembly having knowledge that their are faster ways to do such things, and having no youthful desire to prove themselves.

    Further, younger people simply dont know what they want yet, so they may be gung ho today, learning like gang busters. then they find they really want to do something else, and they go that that hard too. An older person generally still has this enthusiasm, but its more focused.

    I can still code around these young kinds. But I am going to bed at 2am. if the contest is 1 week, he will spank me. If its 1 month, I will be at his funeral...

    Yea, lets not run down and fsck one of those cows said the old bull, lets walk down and fsck them all! (Colors)

    People usually loose credability the second they say Java performance is aweful. It shows they base their facts on rumor and not knowledge.

    So while you sound sensible, And I have no knowledge to refute what you say, since I know your Java statement is inaccurate, I have to drop the rest of your statement as well...

    Its irrelevent. I am sure if SCO opened their code to full inspection, they would have numerous GPL violations. Thats just how business goes these days. Thats why you see big companies settling out of court. And thats one of the major reasons for the patent frenzy. So, so what if their is 80 lines of stolen code. Lets see how much GPL/LGPL/other license code is hidden in the SCO code....

    Why? These are IDs. I do not see what information they contain that you would be concerned about. they are not recording devices. I do not see any additional privacy concerns beyond what we have with store "savings/check cashing" cards and barcodes already.

    I don't recall anyone with a cadilliac or other high end luxury car, or other passive anti theft car with the RFID tag in the key, concerned about privacy.

    I don't recall any dolphins or sharks complaining about the RFID tag on their fins.

    I'll complain when they try and tag my children at birth...

    Not really. I expect NVIDIA to beef up their product claims and press releases as do all companies today, though shamefully.

    I do not expect outside firms to lie to me, ala Arthur Andersen. If Futuremark can not eliminate this, they will be useless, as the plainly see.

    I can't imagine the relationship between FutureMark and any company who makes video cards to be peachy after the auditing scandals of late.

    I think NVIDIA and ATI expect to be allowed a little play. But thats not in FutureMark's best interest.

    If car thieves came up with a new way to break into cars, and Ford came up with a countermeasure, do you really think they'd retrofit that countermeasure to all Ford cars in the world, for free? (After all, cars are already supposed to be secure, right?)

    I do not remember ever any claims of security by any auto manufacturer. Certainly no American one. We still use plastic ignition columns...

    Or if Ford developed a new kind of airbag? (After all, cars are already supposed to be safe, right?)

    Yes and no. The lawyers would never allow Ford to create a 'new kind of airbag', because then you would be right. Remember, people have sued for precisely this exact reason. I think some have even had out of court settlements.

    Or a way to reduce pollution by 50%? (After all, cars are already supposed to eco-friendly, right?)

    Well since I am in the auto industry I will let you in on a little trick I noticed here in the motor city. We get the government to make laws mandating levels of safety and security. that way all we have to do is meed the letter of the law. That removes the liability from the OEM, and puts it on the law makers. Can you sue the government? Only if they give you permission ;)

    Thus, we really do not need to keep up with the market, only the laws. The US Energy secretary is a Lebanese-American-Michigander. Still waiting on those new MPG regulations...

    Interresting. I suppose SCO is doing a good job. Before we were arguing this whole thing is BS, and they side stepped our arguments.

    The steps;

    1. SCO is off their rocker and their is likely no stolen code.

    2. Novell interjects: Not only that but SCO does not even have the copyright to the code they claim is stolen.

    3. SCO rebuts: Yes we do.

    4. Well IBM should settle since the code is obviously stolen.

    I do not know what 2 and 3 have to do with getting from 1 to 4, but this is the strange path which seems to have been taken on /.

    Most big corporation know of many violations of their patents, but they do not persue them. Its like the Mutual Assured Destruction doctrine.

    When one starts suing, I think it makes everybody nervous. Its certainly a sign of instability within the company.

    I imagine that they are being careful. What if they show you something and you say, "hey I wrote that!" And that is released under GPL.

    And of course they can not show all the code. They know that programmers are lazy sometimes and simply copy code they should not have. (or bring code from their last job). I know I keep a personal copy of everything I write ;) Unless they audit their code monthly, which I am sure they do not, they can't be sure themselves they are not violating the GPL or some other license or copyright.

    Actually, Linus position is meaningless because he can not disclose it. He can NOT say, "hey they have a case" because that would be against the NDA. Just like saying, "they have no case" would also be against the NDA.

    But yes, if they are super confident, they can subponea Linus, without knowing his position. (though I am sure he can disclose his opinion to them)

    I agree with your 2nd point totally.

    How long did it take the music industry to realize this would not work with CDs? not long at all, but they do seem to want to undo this universal compatability. But people get greedy and look for ways to force it to work. It will never work.

    And yes, html is more than enough. This is a book, not a website. Its about reading words, nothing more nothing less. if you start up with the pictures and sound, people will ignore you in favor of a movie or TV...

    I bet someone will propose flash :D

    I don't think people want open source "laws." We want freedom of choice.

    We do not want to be locked into a particular software package so they can exthort money out of us. Charging for what amounts to an upgrade is just wrong. Charging for and upgrade that makes the software do what you said it would do in the first place is wronger. Charging for security fixes is wrong. I don't like to see my tax dollars wasted. If you are a private company, that I have no stock in, do what ever you want...

    I have never seen Ford charge their customer for a recall...Only in software.

    I believe their was already a case in michigan that held what you throw out enters the public domain. Or at least it can not be considered private. Nevertheless, if I throw the title to my house in the trash can and you show up with your wife and kids, your going to get the open end of my boom stick.

    does not matter either way, DMCA sucks. Government can be frustrating. everyone wants to take advantage of everyone else...

    I am using samba. but samba wont go through the firewall. I only allow ssh through the wall, so I need to do it over ssh, whatever it is.

    Do not bring laptops because they will be 'lifted.' Bring a big ugly honking computer. as long as it has a Ethernet connection, you wont need to move it. Strap it to some 45lb weights or something. if their going to steal it, make them disassemble it.

    You should not need a palm pilot or the like because your schedule will be the same for 3-4 months straight. If you cant remember to get to class, then you should drop out :D

    I have been looking for something like this, however my computer is a windows 2000 box, and the computer I connect to is running ssh on RH8. I don't see any that do this for windows yet.
