As some one said "all are guilty, but all are responsible". I am ashamed and feel complicit in that which enables our fellow human beens do great evil to each other and yet find some solace that they are those who are willing to risk their lives to expose lies fed to us all by the US government. Kudos to WikiLeaks for doing what they do.
HFCS has been proven to raise triglycerides by as much as 1/3. I myself have lost 30 lbs by nothing more than removing it from my diet. So its really not good for the human body. Now wait a minute. This is a reasoning which always gets us in trouble. Some good data and some completely unsupported information. Likes of "I saw today 10 fat people, ego the sky is falling". How did you figure it out that loosing 30 lbs it to be attributed to removal of only HFCS from your died? There are way too many parameters which affects us, could it be that something else changed as well? I am not trying to whitewash HFCS , but anecdotal evidence is not evidence at all.
Obese people do make a poor choices and reducing their weight should be tout as a benefit to them selfs and not as a "solution" to global warming, which is utterly ridiculous idea.
Is it irrational for them to attempt to use what works for them most often?
Yes it is. Confronting irrational person with well laid out arguments IS irrational, for humans are not primitive machines, engineers are accustomed to dealing with.
The engineer, although similarly powerless to enact change in, say, global politics, will do the only things he can, like annoy everybody around him trying to convince them to see his viewpoint.
You see, that is the irrational part. Their rationality does not much extend past mechanical things of their expertise, broadly speaking. Perhaps it is a lack of Humanities in their education, but more often than not engineers seem to have rather narrow minded approach to life. Clearly any rational person would see that annoying everyone is not the way to convince anything or anybody.
>and that koko has been reading picture books to herself at bedtime just like a school kid would do, it's only imitation." > >
It is. I'm glad we agree.
And why is that? Would you elaborate on that? If you ever had a child, you would see that they all start with imitation of older kids and parents, then they develop their own interest on reading books.
But really, where does imitation stops and genuine interest develops? That how the learning starts, by imitation. Would you say that someone who intents to go to college just wants to imitate those who
already with college degrees and thus somehow inferior? Koko expressed interest in reading picture books, just like human kids do and the actual reasons for these are hidden and as such it is a sufficient
indication of intelligence for me. Again too many people start with a presumption of superiority towards animals and since they are the ones who define what "superior" means they always come out on top.
Non-human animals are different from us but removed from us not as far as most of us assume.
Get a Mokka pot, also known as a stovetop espresso pot (it isn't really espresso, more pressure percolated).
I second that. Moka pot does not make espresso though. It is something else, really an espresso like only much better and often stronger then espresso. Myself, I grind my coffee beens not as fine as for espresso making and tap it a bit with a spoon. The main trick is really to use very low flame and take it off as soon as it is done. It may take a while to make but result is well worth it, especially at the morning. I have electric stove which is hard to control. Instead I use this backpacking stove. Try the moka pot. Experiment with different beens, coarseness of the grinding, packing, etc. It is much better than any stuff from Peets or Starbucks.
It was and it wasn't, for many reasons not the least one been the
fact that such cynical views of the society were not as prevalent
as they are now. Perhaps it is some information overload. We as a
society became numb to scientific and engineering advances like
space flight. Even a trip to Mars will be a less of en event than
first man in space or sputnik was.
I'll remember him for his stories of Ijon Tichy and the satire he would write about regarding anything from governments to advertisements.
It is truly a sad day for
all SF readers. Lem was a greates SF writer of all and it is a shame so few of his works are
translated to English. Ijon Tichy is a example I read it in Russian and wanted my coworkers to
read it as well but did not find it in English. Rest in peace.
I also think that the view of many Java (and Ruby) developers that a DB provides 'persistence' is wrong. It's a failure to understand relational theory - which at least, unlike most object modelling techniques, has a firm mathematical foundation.
It is true that simple mapping of relational data structures brings us to some degree to
pre-relational days (i.e. databases which stored data as tree structures, objects and what not). However it is somewhat mitigated by the fact that underline storage is still RDBMS
and relational logic could still be incorporated in views, which would in turn could be mapped
to whatever object structure we use. Not to mention that fact that majority of applications
could do just fine with database as simple back end store after all.
"It doesn't seem to me that this fantastically marvelous universe, this tremendous range of time and space and different kinds of animals, and all the different planets, and all these atoms with all their motions, and so on, all this complicated thing can merely be a stage so that God can watch human beings struggle for good and evil - which is the view that religion has. The stage is too big for the drama."
The other possibility is that this whole Universe is a stage for a much larger drama which is not about humans at all. And we, humans, appear to be mere bystanders caught in a crossfire.

Skills in matrix management
Is that something related to linear algebra? No seriously, WTF is that. New buzzwords every other month!

Could the Duke Nukem be far behind?
Had she been blocking traffic, that might have been another question, ...
LOL. I would like to see someone trying to park in the middle of intersection and get away with it!
Is it irrational for them to attempt to use what works for them most often?
Yes it is. Confronting irrational person with well laid out arguments IS irrational, for humans are not primitive machines, engineers are accustomed to dealing with.
Maybe it might be a good idea to put together a "how to recognize and interact with engineers" book or something?
And who would be its audience. Engineers, I bet.
The engineer, although similarly powerless to enact change in, say, global politics, will do the only things he can, like annoy everybody around him trying to convince them to see his viewpoint.

And the existence of God cannot be disproven.
Existence of Iraq's WMDs cannot be disproven either.
What's the difference between introspection and self-introspection?
The later one you can do yourself.

>I guess we're screwed, then. It's titled "Transformers."
But note that it starts with 'T'. There is hope after all.

Reality is not based on thought it is based on physical rules that we can all percieve.
:)
That is a thought.

So, if you've got cutting edge hardware, vista will take advantage of it. If you don't, it won't. Where's the problem?
The problem is that Bill Gates is a Satan. Now if you don't mind I will go back to my terminal as I need to fix my X server.
The Googleplex is in Mountain View, California. :)
:)
I know that. I was wandering however if they opened branch in Hell or something.
Google can integrate it into Gmail, Blogger, hell,...
Google has offices in Hell?

Do you consider astronomy a soft science?
Astronomy is a science. Cosmology, String Theory and alike are not. For example see here.
... just drench your pillow in a cocktail of fungicide and DDT and a few other nerve agents. That should lower your risk substantially.
The other way would be to spray your pillow with Raid every night. Don't know how you gonna sleep though.
Somebody subscribed the reader to www.google.com/reader/rss and now its dissapeared up its own arse.
Obviously a black hole is about to be formed somewhere in Mountain View.
