Money money money. This is what Larry cares about and NOTHING else.
I am sure if it is a possible future asset and its not making money today it will be closed down and stored out of public view. If sun has an open source project you care about a full check out of source would be suggested ASAP.
There is a big difference in open intentions and an Open standard. What is stopping them from running a new standard through ever time there is a new version of office ?
So just when people have mastered this standard the next one is trotted out..
If Apple based everything they did on ogg and a company that has patents that ogg violates could then sue the pants off of apple. Patents are probably a very good reason to keep things closed so even if they a company is violating a patent no one knows and they can do their buisness.
I know of a company that has more than 10,000 mac's installed and they do not have a central IT department to support them. Because they dont need one, you might not believe me but it is true.
The mac for the most part "just works" and that is what makes it attractive to people that don't ever want to know what "xhost +" does, (IE artists, Grandma, Accountants, the 12 year old niece etc.. ).
The mac is a system not a set of components that can be miss-configured or never work in edge cases and that is what people love. I hope ubuntu can eventually get there. The people that want a system that is good enough use windows, the people that don't have money or are idealogs use linux.
I predict as unbuntu or any other linux starts to get there it will suplant windows long before it starts to touch the mac user base.
someone needs to wake up and smell the money trail

Protesting Apple's DRM
·
· Score: 1, Interesting
If it wasn't for consumers (who are at least semi happy about it) then this wouldn't exist and its popularity is growing. If apple did want to sell music that was not DRM'ed the recording cartel of america wouldn't sell it to them (RIAA).
Is it possible apple is in a catch 22 here, they want to sell non DRM'ed stuff but the content cartels wouldn't dare let them ?
If you can remove yoruself from the emotional aspect of this, then look at it from their perspective most of their customers (90%+) are using one operarting system vendor.
If that vendor wants to sweeten the deal or play hard ball behind the scenes it could make their life hell. Now that Lenovo is based in china, who knows what m$ can twist behind the scenes.
If you pay for a T1 line, or a now comcast is advertising 6 MB , you should be able to use it. If they want to complain that you are using what they sold you and then punishing you for using it. I would think at least in america you could file a class action law suit.
No one should be able to sell you a large amount of bandwidth then punish you for using it, no matter what the protocol.
Since when is any major OS vendor's security reached through obscurity of its file system ? I would contend NTFS is much like th binary word format, a format that helps microsoft alot more than the people that use it.
BTW apple does not required that the partition be FAT32, it is just more compatible and mountable with other OS's.
Everyone in Europe LOVES what the american government is doing in the world, I imagine this could backfire on microsoft in so far as an expectation that this could effect positive change.
None of the major labels will allow non DRM'ed music, I am sure apple could be convinced to throw out DRM. Instead blocking on DRM and bitching they made lemonade.

Those middle men were there before, this is just a reduction in the number of middle men.
The RIAA has gone a long way toward destroying itself, deep gaffes that it won't fully understand for 10 years.
If your buisness doesn't agree with the license DON'T use it.
You can't have your cake and sell it too !!
My white list doesn't include windows, which makes all of this go away !!
Here is an interesting link...

I admire you gumption, but you are clearly swimming upstream.
I would love an update on how this pans out.
AAC is an actual standard, part of MPEG 4, un like WMV and now MP3, anyone is free to implement.

I would disagree that buying music that is flawed EG i can't use it with devices i desire, vs buying in DRM free for increases consumer value!!
;) ...
But what do I know I am just a consumer

So just when people have mastered this standard the next one is trotted out
BSD makes sure the software is free to use
GPL makes sure the software is truly free
I always suspected it was an artificial arms race, it would seem this proves it to a certain extent.
The RIAA has truly won, Russia can now join ITO
how about banning all sony batteries instead of entire brands that use some sony batteries ?
I have a mac book pro that does not have a sony battery.

I imagine this might help slow competitors to market as well, proxy war fair .

Seems like a simple case of negotiations break down, I bet it was something like Adobe wanted something very small and microsoft isn't going to budge.
... ;) It is actually open and unencumbered.
How about ODF instead
Doesn't seem to work on my platform of choice, OSX.
Any hope of open development, or at least binaries for various *nix's ?
