If it's formula is a trade secret and you figure it out, then tough luck for them. That's a fundamental difference between trade secrets and patents. They are not going to be successful in suing you without a patent.

If it's taken from monopolistic rent, then we would have been better off donating the money directly ourselves. If Microsoft sells products that increase economic productivity by more than they cost, then it's a genuine humanitarian act. Given the legal decisions against Microsoft here and in the US, I tend to think it's taken from rent.

Have to love how they discuss free services like Skype:

As these services are running on the Internet, though, they are susceptible to latency, distortion, and other factors that can lower performance and sound quality.

Glad that the reviewed fee-based services aren't using the Internet as well.

I think smugmug's user interface, features, and speed are far superior. You have to pay $29.95 per year, but for that you get no advertisements, unlimited storage, ability to view and download original files, and easy online printing.

  8. Shift in revenue away from content producers? on TiVo to Sell Your Fast-Forward Button · · Score: 1

So how do the networks earn money to produce content if Tivo usurps their advertsing space with advertising of its own? Do the networks and cable channels who derive most of their money from ads somehow share in the revenue? If not, it would seem to be an ultimately unsustainable model - if everyone has a Tivo, why would I pay to advertise on ABC/CBS/NBC when I know most people will just fast forward through it and see a Tivo advertisement instead.

The 23" is only single link. I have one and it worked fine with my old Geforce2MX before the G5 came. Apple's tech specs also show it as requiring only a full single link. Its the 30" that requires dual link.

They release a radio with USB connectivity and are surprised when someone figures out a neat and easy way to "Tivo" their content? Funniest reference in the article was to the fact that the RIAA and XM are busy figuring out if any copyright laws or user agreements were broken. Management really should have gotten a handle on this before the product was released.

Actually there were several times in March-April that my TIVO asked permission to change the channel for a "service update" while I was watching live TV. (Usually at 1:00am PST) This was not zero impact because it would change the channel unless I told it not to. If I happened to be watching something out of the 30 minute buffer and it changed the channel, the buffer would empty and I would have lost a service for which I had paid. When I called TIVO to explain this problem and asked them to knock it off, I was told they could not stop it. However, I have noticed that it now does these service updates at 3:00 or 4:00am. The software version is also updated to 2.5.2.F6-01-1-011, but I am not sure if the two are connected.
