  1. Re:+3db Doubles Power, +10dB Doubles Loudness on NASA Benchmarks the New G5 Powermac · · Score: 1

grade of annoyingness/painfulness is directly linked to frequency/dBa spl and varies greatly depending on the frequency spectrum though. but yeah, it's all covered :)

  2. Re:If I remember right... on NASA Benchmarks the New G5 Powermac · · Score: 5, Informative

actually you only need 3 db to double the volume (which, btw, has little to do with loudness). and 1000 dBa is, I hope, impossible.

5 years away maybe, but yes. With Doom III headed to consoles, other big titles that are traditionally PC only brands (Starcraft, for instance) being released on consoles first it really is only a matter of time. However, I still prefer a crisp computer monitor to a TV set (and I have a nice 16:9 telly).

as I recall from the earlier article, the thing would mainly blind pilots/personnel (which comes with some legal problems) and ignite fuel tanks. The thing is, once the system is working it's a lot cheaper than any projectile weapon. Using a million-dollar Maverick to take out a truck convoy isn't too economic.

I don't know any specifics regarding this on-chip antenna, but I do know that there were medical studies regarding the radiation emitted by cellphones and the consensus then was that external antennas (pointing out at a specific angle) greatly reduce the -possibly- harmful radiation.

A $50 USB Bluetooth adapter. Several companies make them, D-Link, Acer and others. Once it's plugged in, you have a new System Preferences symbol for Bluetooth options.

Yeah, its called paybox and is pretty popular here in Germany. The system basically authorises wire transfers/credit card transfers via an SMS on your mobile phone. Heres the UK website of theirs: http://www.paybox.co.uk/

For club-style Radioshows I agree, but at least here in .de it is pretty common to share a night with at least two other DJs in regular techno clubs - and what works best for me is when I select my vinyl depending on my mood and the time at which Im scheduled just before I leave, never more than 2 crates. Its a matter of preference I guess, I like to know my records, which ones work together, etc.

  14. Re:Why do we really need DJ's? on DJs Spinning Those Hard Drives · · Score: 2, Insightful

Good Techno music is arranged with a DJ in mind. Only a few, very monotone tracks that hardly evolve give the DJ a lot of freedom in putting together his mix and working the crowd. Getting people to flip out and scream is part of that, but also continuity, flow and other terribly in-crowd things.

  15. DJing is something else... on DJs Spinning Those Hard Drives · · Score: 1

Personally I dont know the guy in question, but you dont have to be a hip-hop or Techno DJ to realize that Vinyl has a different sound, even compared to CDs, that beatmatching is something that helps if you actually want to mix and that its terribly unsexy to bop your head while staring at your iPods displays. Another problem in my eyes is capacity. An ipod has -way- too much storage room for a DJ.

  17. Re:Education only!? on Apple Releases New PowerBook and the eMac · · Score: 1

Well, there definitely is more to that. I just paid 4050 Euros (the Apple store even lists them for 4400 Euro) for each of the two new 800 Mhz PBs I ordered. There's a -definite- surcharge over the American $3200. I'm not that good at math, but that's roughly $900 difference from the German Apple webstore.

  18. Re:Availability on Apple Releases New PowerBook and the eMac · · Score: 1

I didn't regret ordering two of those PBs for 8000 Euros just now, but I felt sort of wierd. My car doesn't cost as much as one of those PBs.

Of course it is. I would have bought the 667 in a second about two weeks ago, if I would've been available. I wouldve saved 500 too. Ah well, no iPod for me for now.

  22. Re:Availability on Apple Releases New PowerBook and the eMac · · Score: 1

You're right, I'll have to see how that works out, but as an audio-person I'm too happy about that L3 cache (the 550/667 were actually slower for audio work than the 400/500) and the audio in - working without an extra audio interface on the road for small recordings rocks.

1280 x 854 is the new resolution, as compared to 1152 x 768 before. One major addition for me as sound engineer is the adition of a Audio Line in, which until now was missing from the Tibooks.
