For a couple months of doing what I do for a hobby (this is a contest, contests get entered by hobbyists) I'd say 11 grand is nice. That would get me 2 nice new G4s and some nice developer software packages.
So WC3, RTCW, Unreal, UT, Q3, Civilization, Max Payne, Deus Ex, Jedi Outcast, those aren't games. No those are decoration. The real games are on PC, you know, like WC3, RTCW, Unreal, UT, Q3, Civilization, Max Payne, Deus Ex, Jedi Outcast. Oh wait a minute, those are the same games... whoops
I never thought it wsa really confusing. You open up the preferences panel, and now you're in an application, therefore you have buttona. But maybe that's just me, maybe it really is confusing.
1) A result of the new UI where you navigate in a browser window. BTW command N never created a new file, it created a new folder.
2) I dunno, ask steve
3) A result of switching to the UNIX underlay. UNIX (being a CLI system) like Windows (based on a CLI system) use file extentions. Classic OS (not CLI based) never user a CLI thus never needed the extentions and could use a more reliable and superior system
4) Again, result of using UNIX. Compatibility mean using what's already standard. Sucks to not be proprietary anymore doesn't it? But that's what happens whne the PC whinners get their way. Besides, it's a small trade off.
5) First rule of thumb in mac OS, if it's an icon, double click. If it's anything else, single click.
Actualy, speaking as a mac user, I absolutely dispise file extentions (even if they are hidden). I prefer to old OS 9 way of doing things (creator code / type) To me it was much more effiecient and reliable. And I never had to have the publisher tell me what could and couldn't open what files. I just opened the program I wanted to use,and then opened the file. If that didn't work, there is a wonderful program called Cambio, which allows you to change the creator anf type of any file, and even has a list of the most common.
On top of that, C/T gives me better info than a 3 letter extention. As was pointed out by another poster, some programs use the same extention for different documents. With the C/T codes, I can look at the creator, and know what the document was supposed to be, even if the extention is the same.
See, not only is OS X a great OS, but it's also helping poor confused lonely slashdot trolls with nothing better to do with their lives except read slashdot while jacking of to 256 color jpegs scanned from 1970 issues of playboy become better aquainted with their sexuality. Now if only windows hadn't caused him to become that way in the first place.
Do linux people really still program such non-portable apps? Lesson 1 in the e101 text book (and I'm not lying, I have it right here) has a full section on portability and why we would want apps to be portable and even urges the reader to make all his apps as portable as possible, even if it means extra code.
I actualy use XP on my PC (which is hosting my server) but I'll tell you, XP is anything but fun. It's cleaner and more reliable than previous versions of windows, but it still feels like windows. I would still recomend he use OS X if for no other reason than he gets the stability speed and reliablility of OS X and the power of UNIX all in one isntall.
I want a system that does what I tell it to, not what it thinks I want. I want something that is coded efficiently, smoothly, and takes up a minimum of space.
Sayth I (paraphrased): Buy a mac. True, he theoreticaly could get the same results from linux, but then read the next part of what he said:
And I want it by Thursday. Do get the sort of efficiency that he's asking for out of linux, he would have to work at it quite a bit. OS X is working right out of the box. And it provides UNIX compatibility on top of that. Plus, he could always run linux on his back too. I'm just giving him the best option for what he wants. Note he said nothing about the system being proprietary.
Sure, I would admit it. The Beta was dog slow (but still useable as a primary OS for 4 months). X.0 was a little faster but not much. X.1 was a noticeable improvement, the system was useable beyond minor tasks. X.2 I've only toyed arround with in stores, but it sure as hell seems much much faster than X.1
Besides, what's wrong with admiting it? Linux was sluggish in it's early stages too once the GUI kicked in.
in all honesty, if all of slashdot wanted to bring M$ down fast, anyone with M$ stock would start selling and convice others to sell. It's a snowball effect like a stock market crash. A few people sell, other look at them and say they must know something we don't, so they sell, then other sell becasue they sold and on and on and on.
Simple, brand name. Try to explain to a non tach savy person (yes they still exist, and in millions at a time) that they should buy a product that isn't Microsoft. They've probably never heard of the other company, and if it isn't microsoft "I won't work right with my computer because my computer had microsoft on it already". Believe me I've heard that hundreds of times. Now imagine that same attitude on a corporate scale, and you've got one hell of a succesful business nomattr what crap you feed these people.
IF the patents were filed in 1995, but ebay had a working business model that same year, and the patent wasn't granted till 1998 (and the "inventor" still did not have a working business model) shouldn't that invalidate the patent
The difference is, he patented a means of using electricity to provide a constant light source. The light bulb was innovative, and edison actualy had a physical contruct of the invention. This guy has patented the obvious and has no physical contruct (hell he couldn't even make his own business model work)
Would a mile hike back and forth to school each day, plus carrying the books and coputer arround all day constitute enough of a haul for you? Believe me, ask any highschool student about lugging 6 pounds arround on their back all day and they'll ask you how the hell you managed to only have one class.
I could swear I've seen a report or two before that walking briskly is actualy healthier than running. It's less stress on the system over all (espesialy joints) and because it's not as tiring, you're more likely to continue doing it.
The whole point was that posts are supposed to be static. This prevents things like a person changing their viewpoint afterwards just because they got bad mod points. Likewise if/. can claim static posts, then it's much easier for them to fight off companies like M$ when they demand the discussions to be censored (http://www.eff.org/IP/DMCA/20020503_dmca_conseque nces.html)
I wouldn't know for sure, but if the bennies that you get for working with the FBI are the same that the Air Force is offering, 45K is well within reasonable and 60K would nicely cover your expenses.
6.3 lbs? That's it? Hell my iBook wieghs in at 6.6, and I lug that arround all day. Man if you cant carry a 6.3 lb gun through an obsticle course, you definately do not deserve to be in the FBI. Expesialy if you call yourself geek.
At least the games we have are quality
Because the only way to get games is to make them?
Not only that, but I suggest you take another look at the mac game market.
RTCW
UT
Q3
Civilization
AOE2
Max Payne
Deus Ex
Oni
Jedi Outcast
Myst 3
and plenty of others
not only that, but maybe you should check out www.ambrosiasw.com

How does Apple changing and API affect CD support in windows?

Try this one on for size for extra fun:
Mac ---TimbuktuPro control--->PC---TimbuktuPro control--->back to the mac
The computers flip out trying to figure out who is controling who. Not to mention the remote viewing of the desktop!

In that case, may I suggest buying from these guys

Patents have to be for something that is a physical invention.
No they don't. Consider the patent currently being discussed. It's a patent for an electronic model of a real world business.
Or what about the patenet of swinging on a swing?
Or entertaining teh cat with a laser pointer?
Or one click?
