Life Lesson #4,582: The media is not your political watch dog. However much they pretend to be for informing you of important / relevant information, the only thing they will air is stuff that sells.
Fact: MoveOn.org does not pay for ads on a regular basis on TV, and certainly not on CBS.
Fact: Pepsi does
Fact: Politics and voting are of little concern to over 50% of the population
Fact: Comercials that are entertaining generate better response from the viewing audience.
Fact: The superbowl is not a political forum, nor is it supposed to be used as such.
Conclusion: CBS does not care for, nor will they air the MoveOn.org ad, especialy given that it's a political ad whihc means (IIRC) they then have to give equal time to an ad supporting bush. CBS does care about pepsi ads because papsi ads sell products, which generate more advertising revenue for them and also keep viewers entertained.
Therefore: You should stop expecting the media to be your political watchdog.
Well, it doesn't always work for the majority, as evidenced by the last election (but let's not get into that).
50 kids have died while feds were serving drug warents huh? Do you have a source for that, and stats? Are these "kids" the same ones that some gun studies use (age 7 - 25)? How many of these kids were actively involved (i.e. they shot at the cops)?
Sure, if you can find an external one, or feel like voiding your waranty.
Or you could use these drivers to map the hardware button to a right click and the trackpad tap to a left click. As well as add the scroll features on either side of the track pad:
Of course, there's absolutely nothing stoping you from using the nice modifier keys which are within reach of the trackpad to do the same functionality.
Only any user who has your admin passowrd (or an admin account) and if someone has that and is acting maliciously, you have bigger problems than that person loging into Joe User's account.
You might want to read a bit more about mac hardware. The only "closed" hardware is the chip and motherboard. RAM is standard, HDDs are standard, standard grpahics cards, optical media is standard. The core of the OS is open, the firmware (read BIOS) is open etc etc etc.
I don't suppose it's possible that he uses a mobil wireless laptop in his house, and often finds himself out of range of the first base station, and thus the second one doubles as a net connection for both the MP3 player and a nother laptop is it? No I suppose having a logical explination would shatter your world view.
So buy a fucking two button mouse and plug it in. *GASP* it works! Even better, you could buy a 5 or 12 or 40 button mouse, and as long as you could get drivers for all 40 buttons, it would work. Suprise suprise, apple actualy uses or at least is compatible with standard parts.
And how is a menu bar at the top of the screen inaccessable?
No, a laptop is not a portable music player. It can be used as one, but it is not one. You're trying to say novacaine isn't original because people have used anesthesia to make you not feel pain.
Because it's a functionaly different design. If you were today to invent a plastic as light and thin as silk but with the stregth of steel, you could patent it, despite plastic already being invented.
So by your logic, a mouse and a trackball and a trackpad are all the same thing? After all, they're all devices that translate lateral had motions into onscreen movement for navigation of a computer system.
It's my understanding that it's these subtle differences that allow people to make generic versions of otherwise patented products. I'm not saying it isn't a stupid way of handling things, but c'est la vie
I would be willing ot bet that the important distiction is that pong (IIRC) used a knob while the iPod actualy uses a wheel. Sure it's a petty distiction, but it's these types of distictions that make things work.
No, because that isn't how it works. The wheel pad will not respond to motion that moves radialy, only motion that moves arround the circle. Likewise, unlike a trackpad, it registers continuous motion, there is no need to stop at the edge and reposition your finger.
And I could make a portable music player with a plastic fish pasted onto it that lip-synched all the songs played on it, and that would be unique too, but it doesn't mean I get to patent the stupid thing.
Because in this case, the wheel is used as the primary navigation system to select and move through the menu and settings. Though I haven't read the patent, I'm sure it's very specific to it's application in a portable music player. Much like I'm sure the patent on the mouse scroll wheel is specific to it's application on a computer interface.
It's a matter of speed in the end. While doing something particularly complex, text commands may be better, doing day to day tasks (email, web, etc) the mouse is just easier. Try navigating slashdot with Lynx, and then do the same with IE. IE is easier. We are ultimately a visual people. Roadsigns are all visual, and instructions for many things are easier with immages. Sure text is good for complexity, but in the end, it's a merge of the two that generate the best system. For example, you can drive all over the US without ever knowing a word of english, so long as you recognize the visual hints. But when you get to your destination, and need more detail, that's when you switch to words and language. And the only reason you use words as opposed to a deck of picture cards is due to speed of communication. If it were faster to use a deck of pictures and you had the nessesary storage, you would use the pictures.

But who would permit them to join the union if not the federal government?
Except the government doesn't work for just you. It works for the people as a whole.
If the federal government can't add teritory to the US, who can?
Sure, if you can find an external one, or feel like voiding your waranty.

Err... VT paid full educational pricing on the machines.

If you were, you might be able to spell too.

2Gs had them too.

Not unless you have a good TV. Most TVs have very low resolutions.
The difference is right here:
Microsoft software (XP)...uses a Microsoft product (IE)
Apple software (iTunes)....uses an Apple software (iTunes)
In otherwords, XP uses IE (overriding the user's default settings) where as iTunes uses itself and is an application you chose to launch.
Call Apple to get it fixed.
