I agree with point 2 but disagree with point 1. For kids' games (at least for younger kids) Windows is becoming increasingly irrelevant. The relevant platform is now Adobe Flash.
You are correct that economics is not a zero-sum game. Investors pay money to buy stock in a company, and that company tries to create value for its shareholders. If they succeed, then it's a positive-sum game for the shareholders, employees, and customers. When enough companies create value, then the economy grows, and the economy is a positive-sum game.
However, this article is not talking about the economy as a whole, or about investing, but about high-frequency trading. And trading is a zero-sum game. Value is not created in the 40-milliseconds between trades, and for everyone who makes money trading, someone else is losing money.
There's a good explanation of this in an article by Henry Blodget.
When I read your subject line, I thought you were talking about the other obsolete units in the article, namely GHz. When will these journalists learn? It's bogomips, people. It's all about the bogomips.
Worldwide, although ocean temperatures have risen, the overall number and strength of cyclones have not.
Ahh, but total energy consumption by hurricanes over the last few decades has increased worldwide because they are lasting longer. Here's a quote from an interview with Kerry Emanuel, Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology:
"[When you look at] their intensity and you look at how long the hurricanes lasted and you measure the total amount of energy released by the hurricanes, that is going up decidedly in most of the world's oceans, and we have tried very hard to see whether this might be an artifact of the way hurricanes are measured or the data, but no matter what you do, you get this signal. And that signal lies on top of regional phenomena."
Interesting given that the US census population clock currently pegs US population at 289 Million.:-).
I noticed this, too. After poking around a little bit on the site quoted in the report, I found that the number 319 was essentially correct for pre-packaged software jobs, but the multiplier was thousands, not millions. Details, details...
Interestingly, the same site gives a number for the computer programming services industry as 574.4 thousand, even though the report implies that "the software sector" is synonymous with pre-packaged software developers.
The one piece of advice that I would have is to try to understand what motivates software developers. If you can do that, you'll be on your way to being a good manager.
One mistake that I've seen frequently is for managers to cut features that are viewed as unnecessary when the schedule slips, as it inevitably does. Often the features that are the first to get cut are the ones that are enjoyable to work on, and so the morale of the development team falls, which causes the schedule to slip even more. Instead, if each developer has a few small "pet features" that are in the "nice to have but unnecessary" category, that will go quite far in motivating people.
If 95% of your job is uninteresting crap but even 5% is really enjoyable, then you will be much more motivated than if 100% of your job is uninteresting crap, and much more uninteresting crap will get done. The idea that a project can get done faster by adding features is alien to most managers.
I'll post my losing entries here like some other people have done. Maybe someone will enjoy them.

Is it because of the people you hang around with that you say please go on?

Mmmm...bogomips...
Okay, I took a look at some of the moderations and I'm telling you you're wrong.
Any other vague advice you'd like to share?

No doubt. Or just print yourself one.
