I must say besides the whole "crisis response" thing, that is one nice weather map. Certainly better than the radar maps on Weather.gov or Intellicast. Maybe Google should start a weather site. They seem to have the technology down pat.

Think giant T-rex wearing a 3 piece Armani with those little arms of his flailing about erratically because he has the most annoying itch know to reptile-kind on the back of his balls.
I just have to say this AC & the 2 or 3 other AC replies to this must be some kind of anti-google car shill. This did intrigue me so I will answer your questions regardless: 1) The zone will have signs with transmitters...the guy holding the sign doesn't even have to exist anymore. Yay automation!/sarcasm 2) They are already programmed to deal with that. It is kind of a *must have* feature. 3) When people sit around thinking about how robots "see" they often imagine it's the same as watching a TV screen. This is not the case. The CCD sensors in these automatons see a MUCH broader spectrum of light. Things our eyes can't even discern like IR, UV, XRAYS, etc. It can see further, clearer, and faster than you can. It can see mosquitos crossing the street while it is doing 100mph. There are several cameras in existence that can see ice. Detection of ANYTHING is non issue with the available sensor packages of today. 4) Again, sensor packages make this a non issue. It'll see a swerving driver but what to do about it will depend on the rules set forth by the programmers. Since they are humans, which you imply are somehow superior, they can tell it to do exactly what you are talking about- stay 50m away.
That snarky bit about superior humans brings me to my point: EVERYONE thinks they are not the idiot driver in the next lane. Well if you aren't that guy and I'm not that guy then who is? Truth is folks, we ALL are the crazy drivers. As so many others have already pointed out we get distracted over stupid shit-- was that Natalie Portman driving a mint 1981 Delorean covered in hot grits??? No but that is the rear end of a semi trailer, thanks for playing. Computers don't get distracted. They simply malfunction which we are just as easily susceptible to (heart attacks, seizures, intoxication, etc). What they can do to negate this, which we don't do so well at, is redundant hotswappage. Even when we carry backup humans in the vehicle there is no easy method for a passenger to quickly and effectively take over. You have a heart attack and you kill your whole family too. The car can and WILL have several backups to backups. If it takes 15 cameras to make the risk acceptable then dammit they will have 15 cameras. They will have 5 THOUSAND if that's what it takes and the economy will make sure that they can produce enough cameras to make that happen. It always has. I am so certain that way back in the day when automobiles first started cruising the roads with horse drawn carriages that these exact same arguments were brought up. They held no weight back then and they hold no weight today. I mentioned earlier that I felt you thought humans were superior and in this respect we are and all you anti-whatever guys don't see it. If humans see something we want then barring an act of some deity we will have it! There is no possible way we will go backwards in technology unless an apocalyptic event should occur. What you anti-computer/tech & overly religious people need to understand and accept (not just tolerate) is that we have the power to make a whole bunch of awesome stuff happen. It is GOING to happen whether you like it or not. There will be a time that we will be chauffeured around the world in our automated vehicles hangin out with our clones, blown out of our gourds, banging an android prostitute on the way home from work which is being televised on Bawtporn.com because Verizon gave us $5 off our monthly bill (and the whole way the gov knew where you were, what you were doing, and deducted 1.7 millions credits from your bank account for lewd and lascivious behavior). Deal with it. We are humans. Not superior physically but mentally. Somewhere right now on this planet someone is doing something you find reprehensible. Apparently those Google cars were driving around with the general populace for quite some time and you didn't even know! We have the power to clone a human. Some lab somewhere secret is testing it right now. We already have fantastic drugs
I also expect my shit to just work. Put a freakin "check computer" light on the case since you love the car analogies. If SMART senses an I/O error, it can be flagged and the light can be lit. You can also include an in BIOS scanner that could then read said code and tell you what to fix. Now how hard would that be? It would help the grandma's and computer illiterates keep their stuff working and would be a huge boon to the computer repair shops- both issues that are always being argued here on/. (virus spamming bots and outsourced jobs)
As far as which tech is better I think we can both agree that spinning platter memory is outdated but flash just isn't quite there yet. We do in fact need something more advanced and I think we are close.
Obviously not. I see what he says as having nothing in particular to do with being fat (which is a problem no doubt). When I first read that a dozen posts above, I saw it as saying exactly what he said. Don't eat more than you can grow. As in physically grow in the fields. Don't over-consume your limited resources which is a major problem we have today becoming evident with topsoil erosion and general decline in soil nutrient content, clean usable water sources, etc. It can even be paralleled with all of the people claiming Peak Oil, Peak Copper, Peak Lithium, Peak Whatever. If you only have so much to go around, I see him as saying ration it out and don't waste it. See how all this "interpreting" causes these never ending arguments in science?
Ah Texas...well that's all you had to say. I applaud you for being able to leave that very ass backwards place. I withdraw my previous comments about Alaska.
Dude I have been reading alot of your comments on slashdot lately (they seem to get modded up alot) and I just wanna say, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ALASKA?? Seriously guy, your sig suggests we should love Alaska but everything you post makes me wanna run away...quickly...and never look back!
That was a reference to the Dave Chapelle show. You probably knew that and just felt like a being a douche. Congrats. Oh and since you've decided to be a grammar Nazi I will point out that you don't know grammar worth A shit. Pwnd.
Do you indeed need someone to get you out of Worcester State Hospital or is that a joke I don't get? You might wanna consider making that clearer if that's the case.
I have been having this problem for weeks now. Whatever you responded to is not shown to me. I have the sliders slid over to show me everything and yet whoever you were talking to is not known to me. Because your post is rated quite high I'd love to see what was said but I can't. Is that new little flag in the corner responsible and if so when did it become OK on/. to censor information? Anyone else having this issue?
All your respondents seem to be able to come up with to counter your argument is your lack of paragraphs! Indeed they first ignore you then RIDICULE you. Looks like you will win after all. You sir, however little it may matter, have been added to my friends list. I'd like to hear more of what you say. Be wary though, following your a fore mentioned formula get ready for the attacks! They might start calling you nasty things like poopyhead! +5 Intelligent. MOD THIS GUY UP!
Really? I have a brash writing style. I speak clearly, plainly, and simply. My opinions are often unpopular and often against the groupthink (I AM an antisocial nerd after all). That's the best part about/. and what I love most. I can say what I want and it isn't gonna get deleted. That is also the worst part. My karma has been terrible since about 2003. Is it because I troll? Am I posting GNAA ads? Hardly. I haven't posted a purposefully derogatory comment since the post that got me Terrible karma (which was a jab at some mac zealots). My comments may contain graphic language but you're all big boys (or girls) right? We all have to grow up sometime and I have. But my karma would make you think otherwise. The karma problem is alot like the poverty problem out in real life. Once you're down here at the bottom no one listens anymore and your posts are limited to 2 a day I think. No one hears me and hence no one mods me up. So much for getting yourself out of the hole. But hey I guess you'd be one of those folks who would also tell me to stop being poor and pull myself up by my boot straps. I've watched you post for years. I've even responded to quite a few of them but you'd never know because I have to do it AC. I contribute as much to this site as you, Kjella, garcia, Sycraft-fu, eldavojohn, Red Flayer, Jaysyn, NYCL or any of the other/. big names. I need a better way to fix my karma and there simply is no way to do that. As it is I'd have to join the groupthink, act like a yes man, and kiss some butt to get modded. Much like in real life. That just isn't the kind of guy I am. I'm also not the kind of person that if I don't get my way I go complaining to the admins as you also suggest. I fix things my own way but since the admins are asking, I'm telling them. I NEED BETTER TOOLS. It's 2011. You wouldn't ask me to program/. from a C64 or build a jet engine with just a hammer and screw driver. Let's try to solve this in a better manner than relying on people who hate what I say. That's one of the things this site was founded on: free speech. I may have no tact and I may play devil's advocate from time to time but the point is, I am contributing whether you like it or not. That makes me part of the community and for better or worse I have stuck with you guys since 1998ish. I need to load a saved game. I need an extra life. I'd like my karma to be put back to at least what a new user would get. Is that so much to ask?
SUGGESTIONS TO ADMINS: Add some sort of easier way to make links. I'm not a HTML programmer. I'm a hardware geek. I'd give you a real button to push instead of making you open the box up and fiddle with the circuitry. Do the same for me please. Also this weird web 2.0 stuff just doesn't operate quite right especially on a smartphone (I use Opera). The constantly spinning "Working" thingy at the bottom of the page also doesn't convince me that the DB is doing anymore work than it used to. Mine's always working and it never loads anything else even when I want it to.
I know those people you speak of exist but I have the opposite problem. I have been TRYING to get some kind of tower, I'll even take a power windmill, to be put on my property. I live in the country so our land value is already shot by the numerous trailers around here (not that I care about land value) but to have a major corporation actually lease a parcel of my land would be a guaranteed check to pay my mortgage every month. I have yet to find who exactly to contact regarding this or have been given the run around but I guess the reason I am failing is I don't "know" the right people or have enough money. If any of you guys have been successful in this please let me know!
You are correct. They are not stealing my electricity....yet. Do you remember when things like insurance were optional? There have been so many things that the goverment and business have tried out through the years that were optional or in trial testing and guess what? They didn't go away. We got stuck with them. So there will be a time when the power company will make remote controlled smart meters and grid tied inverters mandatory if you want any power at all. Then they'll just turn your a/c off when they want or a myriad of other things. There will be a day that if you want to go anywhere you'll have your gps tracked car auto drive you there- no option. Screw us who actually like to drive. Look at cellphones now. Originally using your phone as a gps was a neato feature that set different models apart, then it was legislated to be mandatory for "safety" and look now. Story after story of iphones and androids tracking you without consent. I also love the fact that I have a smart phone that somehow just won't work without that extra $30 data pack. I hardly believe that is a technical limitation. Cable companies forcing users to use their stupid receiver boxes....I could go on and on with examples of things that were originally just "optional" but then became mandatory. That's how they trick us into taking it in the ass without pissing us off. It's just one big game of "just the tip"
Replace "science" in your statement with the word "religion" or "The Constitution" and re-read it. That was one perfectly written generic statement. I applaud you, sir, and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
I've already told you twice as an AC (I was at work) but you evidently haven't read them or simply don't want to hear it. But I'll tell ya why again. We give them alot of money through grants and subsidies and it still isn't enough money for them. The other big problem is they are wearing our stuff out and leaving us with the cost to fix it. If they need our batteries to smooth out the power load then why don't they just buy some of their own batteries and make a UPS? Do you honestly believe that the power rebates (incentives) they will give you will equal the cost of a 5k-10k battery pack plus the mechanic labor of replacing it (not to mention lost time from work while it's at the shop)? Power cycling batteries dramatically reduces their lifespan. I made you a proposal as well. Let me come to your house and use your appliances, your power tools, and your electronics while you're at work. It's not like you are using them. I'll give you an incentive of $2 an hour just so you can get something out of the deal. Don't come bitching to me though if I wear them out or break them though, you got your $2. But yeah maybe you don't want me there for the whole 8 hours so you can set a limit of 50% and I'll just stay there for four hours. And just in that rare case you do come home early you can just kick me out when you need them so it's 100% "fully loaded". I somehow doubt though you're gonna buy the contract with my company. Do you STILL not see the problem here? I also have problems with several of the other proposed "green" technologies, namely the one one where they put the generators in the road beds and sidewalks and harvest energy from those. They are gonna use my car and my gas or electricity FOR FREE and then turn right back around and SELL it to me. And before you come back with "but it's such a miniscule amount, not even 0.01%, you'll never miss it," let's go to your bank and have them transfer 1 penny per day to ME for free. It's only 0.01% of a dollar. You'll never miss it. You lose more in couch cushions. See the fallacy in my argument?
One more time, here's a real world example that happened to me. When I was stationed in Okinawa Japan in the Army, I had a Toyota Supra that was a race vehicle. One night I wrecked it on the track but it wasn't that bad and I was repairing it little by little in my spare time. One day some military police decided my car was "abandoned" and they towed it off and threw it in the junk yard. The problem with this is in Japan you just don't throw cars away. You have to PAY the junkyard to "recycle" it. They took my car without my consent and then sent me a bill for approx $400. Not only that but some of the parts on my car were borrowed from a race buddy of mine. With vehicle title and registration in hand, I went to the junkyard to reclaim them and they refused to give them to me. I had to BUY back all the parts from MY OWN DAMNED CAR! Double dipping bastards! So what did I do with my daily driver when it came time for me to leave Okinawa? I literally took a plasma cutter and chopped it up into little pieces and threw the entire car, engine, tires, and all into a dumpster. I'll be damned if I let a corporation profit from me for free. They wouldn't let you or I profit from them for free.
You can call me a greedy bastard if you want but my kind of greedy isn't their kind of greedy. I just want my OWN property. The government and corporations want my stuff, your stuff, your mother's, brother's, EVERYBODY'S stuff and STILL want your money too! It's been happening so much lately (due to the bad economy which was their fault) that us poor little plebs are just sick and fucking tired of it. GET IT?
They serve their masters of course. Did you actually read the story or are you just spouting capitalist dogma? At first yeah the bots were just bossing humans around at fast food places and walmart type stores but if you did something the corporations didn't approve of you got blacklisted and became unemployable anywhere. Once that happened and you became poor and couldn't pay your debts you, for all intents and purposes, became property of the state. This divide into haves and havenots guaranteed that once you became a havenot you stayed a havenot and the robots that remained served the haves. So what if there are no customers at the restaurant? Well then the robot owners just closed the restaurants and repurposed the bots to watching the havenots for their own protection of course. The corps still got their money and the stayed in the have group. The story wasn't long enough to explore the logical conclusion that eventually everyone would end up havenots and then would revolt but really that wasn't the purpose of the story anyway. The point of the story was to show the two different extremes one could take to solve a problem or deal with a situation. I also believe it is a political statement that mean ol capitalism leads to a police state and somehow more social societies turn into utopia's but we could argue that for hours.

1) The zone will have signs with transmitters...the guy holding the sign doesn't even have to exist anymore. Yay automation!
2) They are already programmed to deal with that.
No I do believe that cost 30 pieces of silver.
